to be outraged by Nativity casting as 'Innkeeper's wife'!!!

PIPERHELLO · 15/11/2019 09:26

Daughter (6) has been cast as 'someone's wife' in the Nativity play at school. 'Innkeeper's wife' to be precise.

Err...hello!?

This is fucking not OK! In 2019, to be identified as 'someone's wife'.

Normally I am pretty relaxed about all things school, and I certainly feel sorry for he teachers' workloads, but come on people!? This is 2019 - no woman should be identified by her relationship to a man!? SURELY!

Itching to call them out on this. Itching!

OP posts:
theoriginalmadambee · 15/11/2019 10:46

💐 to all the teachers who have to cast the nativity plays this December.

FizzyIce · 15/11/2019 10:46

Fucking hell... seriously??
I was pissed off with my dad’s school as on Dream job day she went as a Vet but walking through the gates the assistant head (man) said “oh a vet nurse”
I corrected him and thought that was bloody rude but that’s different to the op ,it’s always been the innkeeper and his wife

FizzyIce · 15/11/2019 10:46

Dad?! Meant dd 🤦‍♀️

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 15/11/2019 10:46

At our school it's always Innkeeper 1, Innkeeper 2 etc which I do think is better. Perhaps you could suggest that for next year.

Di11y · 15/11/2019 10:48

really don't see why they couldn't have been called innkeeper 1 and 2. and all this bull about how do you shoehorn in the wife is in charge, getting her to answer the door and say no perhaps?

mumwon · 15/11/2019 10:48

one of an inn keeper couple (of whatever gender id who are fully equal & may or may not be married) there, that suit you op??? (translation: get a life! Or are you a troll & like irritating people? Or if serious, there are things that are more important that you should be fighting for! & as I have said before this is the new Victorian age with attitudes that mean there is only one way to think & any other view is that of a blasphemer or moral or social degenerate) As a wife to my dh I do not consider my self his inferior & he certainly doesn't think like that (he wouldn't dare Grin)

Di11y · 15/11/2019 10:49

I quite like the idea of a straight no from the wife and a subversive oh but you could use the stable from the husband Grin

It's really depressing that in a forum mainly populated by women so few posters see the point. Everyday sexism perpetuates stereotypes that limit women in every aspect of their lives. Little girls are the innkeeper's wives and human rights lawyers become George Clooney's wife. Of course this matters, every little bit of sexism should be challenged, otherwise young girls grow up internalizing these messages and then there is no hope for change.

HA. #justice for Sandra Grin

Italiangreyhound · 15/11/2019 10:53

It's not set in 2019 thought is it?!

PS My dd was an Inn-keeper's wife. It's survivable!

Merry Christmas one and all.

FadingStar · 15/11/2019 10:54

Agree with you Boo. It is often the low level, drip drip drip sexism that corrodes girls' self esteem and limits them in so many ways. We are betraying girls by failing to see that the low level, relentless onslaught of sexism is so demeaning and damaging to them. To see women dismissing this, mothers of daughters even, is very depressing.

stucknoue · 15/11/2019 10:54

Take a chill pill. They have to find 60 + roles in a typical infant year, 90 even so some kids are stars, some are sheep. The innkeeper is in the biblical story, the wife is a bonus character. As it's a story 2000 years old no point in moaning that at the time men owned property!

Tartyflette · 15/11/2019 10:54

I get it, it all sounds too ridiculous..... but but but
It's really not fair, is it?
The innkeeper's wife is the subservient role, especially if she just stands there while the male innkeeper has all the lines..
There was an interesting thread yesterday about 'micro' sexist remarks and attitudes which weren't 'micro' at all in many instances. I think this is part of all that. And it reinforces the prevailing message.
And really, how hard would it be to make the roles 'Innkeeper Couple' and divvy up the lines between them?

GettingABitDesperateNow · 15/11/2019 10:55

If it's a modern interpretation of the nativity set in 2019 then yeah it would be annoying. But it's a fact in that time period a woman would just be someone's mother or wife or daughter rather than something in her own right. Inn keepers wife is probably accurate. I'm not sure what else they would have called her

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 15/11/2019 10:55

Isn't the Angel Gabriel actually... Male? But usually played by a (pretty, blonde) girl?

TheSecretJeven · 15/11/2019 10:55

The Innkeeper is just defined by his job instead of John or Simon (say). Perhaps no one in Biblical times were known by their names in official documents. Even the Magi aren't named but are known by their occupation.

VardySheWrote · 15/11/2019 10:56

Booboostwo

Prince Philip is forever the Queen of England's husband.

YOU might know Amal as George Clooney's wife, but in her professional circle, HE is Amal's wife.

It's hardly surprising that the unknown partner of any famous personality is XYZ "wife or husband".

What is wrong is being outraged because someone is the Innkeeper's wife. As if it's can be an insult in any way shape or form.

JAPAB · 15/11/2019 10:56

surely she is an Inkeeper too? the roles should be "The Innkeepers

Not necessarily. She could have been more the housekeeper oor cook. We don't know what her rol was.

I'd have thought that the worst thing about the story is the fact that a woman was impregnated without her knowledge or consent. Surely this disrespect of a woman's autonomy and bodily rights is far more egregious.

Mrsjayy · 15/11/2019 10:57

I think. There is a lot more to get worked up in the Nativity. Than innkeepers wife Boobootwos. I mean we could start with a young virgin being forced. To be a vessel for a baby she. Didn't consent too

VardySheWrote · 15/11/2019 10:57

To see women dismissing this, mothers of daughters even, is very depressing.

to see a woman being dismissed because she is a wife (or a SAHM on this forum in other threads) is what is depressing.

Twinkletoes888 · 15/11/2019 10:57

I remember once my DD school couldn’t find a baby doll and had to use a tickle my Elmo and it keep laughing when it got picked up, was one to remember.

My daughter was outraged at being a donkey.

I hated being anything

marshmellowed · 15/11/2019 10:57

What would you prefer ? for her to be a lamb that identifies as a cow or the village transgender person. Perhaps a non binary angel or a king who has rejected his title and is now just called bob and ring give a gift as doesn’t want to indulge consumerism

marshmellowed · 15/11/2019 10:58

ring-won’t 🤷‍♀️ My phone has a mind of its own

JusticeForSandra · 15/11/2019 10:58

You should write a very strongly worded letter to the Head, Ofsted, your MP, and Number 10. And the Daily Mail.
