to be outraged by Nativity casting as 'Innkeeper's wife'!!!

PIPERHELLO · 15/11/2019 09:26

Daughter (6) has been cast as 'someone's wife' in the Nativity play at school. 'Innkeeper's wife' to be precise.

Err...hello!?

This is fucking not OK! In 2019, to be identified as 'someone's wife'.

Normally I am pretty relaxed about all things school, and I certainly feel sorry for he teachers' workloads, but come on people!? This is 2019 - no woman should be identified by her relationship to a man!? SURELY!

Itching to call them out on this. Itching!

OP posts:
birdling · 15/11/2019 11:12

My son was cast as the Inkeeper's wife last year......

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 15/11/2019 11:12

I would be annoyed. Why aren't they both just innkeepers

Because he was the innkeeper.
She was a SAHM.

matcatwomanheresheis · 15/11/2019 11:12

Never mind #justiceforSandra

The whole point of the story is about a baby being born to a woman whose speciality was her viginity Grin If that little detail hasn’t had ramifications across the centuries, I don’t know what has. Yes we all blithely sing along about the VIRGIN Mary, don’t we. What about Joseph - what was his sexual history? Or did they not feel the need to share on that subject?

Anyway, do go in OP and tell them that Sandra is, in fact, the Senior Shift Supervisor at the Inn with an NVQ level 3 in “Health and Safety with Food Hygiene.” You would like this acknowledged on the programme.

JusticeForSandra · 15/11/2019 11:14

All of the angels were pretty, blonde white children and anyone with a disability should count themselves lucky to get a part playing an animal.

Confused
doubleshotespresso · 15/11/2019 11:14

Would you prefer "Receptionist at the Inn"?
"Civil partner?"
"In-house chambermaid"?

FFS OP I'd love problems like you seriously

Pottedtree · 15/11/2019 11:15

Our school is all boys. Someone's son has to be Mary every year.
We seem to manage.

notsohippychick · 15/11/2019 11:15

My post never suggested talking about only discussing depressing things did it?

It’s called putting things into perspective

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 15/11/2019 11:16

Could be worse, she could be a tree or a sheep.

Ask her to be cast as the innkeepers life partner.

User3421090989098 · 15/11/2019 11:16

Just here to hand you a grip.

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 15/11/2019 11:16

Are people honestly "outraged" by this?

^outrage
noun
UK /ˈaʊt.reɪdʒ/ US /ˈaʊt.reɪdʒ/

[ U ]
a feeling of anger and shock:
These murders have provoked outrage across the country.
Many politicians and members of the public expressed outrage at the verdict.

C2 [ C ]
a shocking, morally unacceptable, and usually violent action:
The bomb, which killed 15 people, was the worst of a series of terrorist outrages.
[ + that ] It's an outrage (= it is shocking and morally unacceptable) that so much public money should have been wasted in this way^

Really? Outraged?

soloula · 15/11/2019 11:16

YABU to be outraged.

But at the same time it's these tiny acts of casual sexism that go unchecked that altogether have a cumulative effect of putting women in their place.

There's no reason why they couldn't simply be the innkeepers. Or even Mr and Mrs Innkeeper. Yes - it's still saying she's the innkeeper's wife but equally he's the innkeepers husband, a subtle difference that is left out by the traditional way of doing things. By using the innkeepers or mr and mrs you aren't giving that horrible, tired idea of a women's role being defined by her relationship to the man...

Skyejuly · 15/11/2019 11:18

I think this would annoy me actually

Toddlerteaplease · 15/11/2019 11:18

But innkeepers did, and still do have wives!

Pinkypie86 · 15/11/2019 11:18

Here they come...
The long list of people who cannot comprehend life!!
I'm assuming ( god help me ) you're a wife?

I suggest you call her the 'Innkeepers...
A) Other Half
B) Significant Other
C) Bit on the side
D) Partner
E) BF
F) GF

Finally... who gives a shit!!!
Get over yourself.

2 stories that really did happen: I had a close mum friend at my daughters nursery school who happened to be Jewish she pointed out to me that her daughter should have been Mary & my dc for reasons we couldn't fathom decided she wanted to be a pig - dh & I (we like my friend had a sense of humour dh is Muslim) gently pointed out to the teacher afterwards that although it didn't upset us it might be wiser to dissuade other children with our background (many years ago - and it hadn't occurred to the teacher - & she was a lovely lady but she took it on board & learnt & tact is much better way to change things & attitudes)

mawof3soontobe · 15/11/2019 11:18

My daughter has been cast as a wise man, should I be outraged? Last year she was "a big fat pig" Grin

GrandmasMeatloaf · 15/11/2019 11:18

Actually, I think Christianity was quite a progressive religion at the time. A similar, contending religion in the first centuries was the Mithras cult, which excluded women (and slaves I believe). It kind of put a limit of the number of worshippers... “big mistake“ to quote pretty woman

lifechangingshit · 15/11/2019 11:19

If this isn't a joke, thank your lucky nativity star that this is the only thing you have to worry about 😘

Dissimilitude · 15/11/2019 11:20

My 6 year old son was cast as a fox, he told us it was "because I'm ginger".

I couldn't stop laughing, plus he seemed actually pleased. He likes foxes.

Confusedbeetle · 15/11/2019 11:21

oh dear, do you not have anything important to think about? Yo cannot relate an ancient legend to today, or are you one of these who wants to rewrite history?

BertrandRussell · 15/11/2019 11:22

“YABU to be outraged.

Yup. Ignore all the little drips and sooner or later you’ve got a massive bucketful. We are building our children’s mental furniture- why not try and build it better than ours?

Alltheprettyseahorses · 15/11/2019 11:23

Oh, Katinski that is just hilarious! Grin Star Grin

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 15/11/2019 11:25

I would have loved to have been a fox! But I was in school in Scotland in the 70s so we didn't have a nativity play... I feel very hard done by.

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 15/11/2019 11:26

FFS OP I'd love problems like you seriously

oh dear, do you not have anything important to think about?

I do feel sorry for people who can only think about one thing at a time. The possibility of having the capacity to think about large and small issues at the same time just completely passes them by, or that people sometimes focus on smaller problems to take their mind off the huge ones they can't solve. Poor stunted souls Flowers

Throwawayteacher · 15/11/2019 11:27

I was a present one year, I bet your daughter is happy to be an actual part of the play! I had to stand in a box just as a head and legs and smile while looking on with jealousy at Mary and Joseph... It was 25 years ago and I never forgot.
