Slow cooker and coke

Pippa12 · 08/11/2019 06:50

Is it true you can put a gammon joint in the slow cooker with a can of coke and leave it to cook? Has anybody done this, does it taste awful?

Yes you can. Use the cheap own brand full sugar cola!

PotteringAlong · 08/11/2019 06:52

You need the sugar to caramelise it

AlwaysCheddar · 08/11/2019 06:52

You might need more than a can but definitely use Coke rather than any diet versions or Coke zero. You can always use Cherry Coke or Dr Pepper.

AliciaMayEmory · 08/11/2019 06:54

I’ve done it a couple of times with coke, but have been told by DC and DH that when I use cider (cheap 2l bottle from Aldi!) instead of the coke it tastes nicer and has more flavour. I’m veggie so haven’t eaten it myself! Others I know love it with the coke, so give it a try.

AliciaMayEmory · 08/11/2019 06:55

Ps you will need enough coke to cover the gammon or it will dry out/ not cook through evenly.

Pippa12 · 08/11/2019 06:55

Thank you- so I I literally tip the ful fat coke/doctor pepper over the gammon turn it on and off it cooks?

Trying to find half decent meals for 4 whilst on nights! Thanks so much for your help Wink

Yes, it's delicious! Takes about 8 hours x

AliciaMayEmory · 08/11/2019 06:56

Oooh, I’ve not tried it with Dr Pepper! I’m doing that next!

Lonecatwithkitten · 08/11/2019 06:57

Nigella Lawson has a recipe for ham in coke, you roast it briefly afterwards with molasses. You can also use cider or ginger beer.

Pippa12 · 08/11/2019 06:57

Thanks so much! I don’t suppose any of you have put jacket spuds in?

Do it with a tin of pineapple chunks and some brown sugar next time. Glorious!

Kay1341 · 08/11/2019 07:01

I've used coke and apple juice, both work nicely! I also chuck in bay leaves, black peppercorns and star anise.

PotteringAlong · 08/11/2019 07:05

I’ve done jackets but only once - the skins went all weird and soggy!

demelza82 · 08/11/2019 10:07

Yes it is lush. I adapt the recipe from Nigella Lawson

Disfordarkchocolate · 08/11/2019 10:09

My son does this and says it's lovely. I'm planning similar next week but with cloudy apple juice.

NerdyCurvyInkedandPervy · 08/11/2019 10:12

I like gammon in lenonade or pineapple juice. Not much of a coke fan myself.

Have a look on slow cooked wonders on fb if you're on it.

weegiemum · 08/11/2019 10:22

Yes, we regularly have this for Sunday dinner. I put it on (gammon + can full sugar coke) before we leave for church at about 11 and by 6:30 or so it's all tender and falling apart - lush!

Never tried jacket spuds, I'd think they'd go soggy. Serve with creamy mash. Veggies and pickled red cabbage.

Myotherusernamewastakenagain · 08/11/2019 10:30

I do it with ginger ale, lovely.

Majorcollywobble · 08/11/2019 10:34

I serve this at New Year with the sweet corn pudding Nigella Lawson recommends .
Don’t bother with the molasses bit tbh .
Plus any joint of bacon smoked or otherwise is perfect not just the more pricey gammon .

charactersonclothesaretrashy · 08/11/2019 10:37

This sounds nice. I'm looking for ways to use my neglected slow cooker atm.

jay55 · 08/11/2019 10:51

I use ginger beer with pork shoulder. Great stuff.

Lottieloves · 08/11/2019 10:54

I think Mumsnet is spooky... I was planning on serving this at my boxing day buffet for the family and couldn't remember where I had seen the recipe...… I now know to google Nigella x

skinoncustard · 08/11/2019 11:05

I also use the Nigella Lawson recipe. I simmer the joint on the hob then do the cloves/ treacle in the oven part . Absolutely delicious, even better cold the next day .
Definitely “real coke” with sugar, I use the best part of the huge bottle , keep topping it up to keep the joint covered. Try not to let it boil over , the resulting sticky mess is terrible to clean .

InOtterNews · 08/11/2019 11:07

I use Nigella's recipe (I don't have a slow cooker though)

Pig in coke yes, spuds in slow cooker no.
