Slow cooker and coke

Is it true you can put a gammon joint in the slow cooker with a can of coke and leave it to cook? Has anybody done this, does it taste awful?

I am half way through ordering my shopping , I will now add a lump of gammon as I have 8 tins of alcoholic ginger beer and I am trying to cut down on the booze .

Iflyaway · 08/11/2019 21:37

Nigella Lawson has a recipe for ham in coke

LOL!

tillytrotter1 · 08/11/2019 21:53

I wouldn't do it in a slow cooker, they always say to reduce the liquid and this needs to be covered with the coke, Trailer Trash ham, lovely. It needs doing on the hob, very low heat.

VanyaHargreeves · 08/11/2019 22:24

I've done it in the Instant Pot which is a Pressure Cooker and Slow Cooker combined

Worked better in the Pressure Cooker setting to be honest

moofolk · 08/11/2019 22:36

I've done it on a hob, then finished in the oven.

Bloody delicious.

Shit I'm hungry now.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 08/11/2019 22:37

I think it’s disgusting 😅

CaveMum · 08/11/2019 23:08

You can do jacket potatoes in the slow cooker. Pierce skins, rub a bit of olive oil on them then wrap in foil and chuck them in the slow cooker with about 1cm water in the bottom and leave them to cook while you’re at work.

I usually put them in a very hot oven for 15 mins to crisp up the skin.

Gammon in slow cooker with the best part of a 2 litre bottle of full sugar coke for 6-8 hours on low.
Gammon out drain and on plate remove fat then glaze with spiced rum and honey mix, stick in cloves if being fancy, put in oven and roast, re-applying the glaze every 20 mins for 40 mins to an hour
Thank me later

I'm going to try the curry, do you use a full jar of paste? It sounds a lot.

abardcalledbeedle · 09/11/2019 12:46

I used curry powder as couldn't find paste in shop

user1374384 · 09/11/2019 12:48

Yes I've done it. You definitely don't need to cover it in liquid! I frequently cook it with just an ounce or so of water in the bottom and it's lovely.

PotteringAlong · 09/11/2019 15:44

I use 3/4 of a jar of paste and usually cook it on slow for about 10 hours.

abardcalledbeedle · 09/11/2019 20:40

Curry was lovely. Meat just fell apart 🤤will find the curry paste though and pass the recipe to my daughter (slow cooker for Xmas)

PotteringAlong · 09/11/2019 20:47
Grin

Glad you liked it!

Parttimewasteoftime · 09/11/2019 20:57

Whole bottle of cinnamon full fat coke with gammon for eight hours yum

Saracen · 10/11/2019 06:41

Trying to find half decent meals for 4 whilst on nights!

In that case, try slow cooked beef stew using beer for the gravy. So easy, so yummy! I prefer Old Speckled Hen (have read this one mentioned a few times on the internet) but DH insists Guinness is the way to go. You might have to try both.

Blush I realised what a horrible judgy-pants I am when I felt compelled to explain the stew thing to the people on the till at the corner shop whenever I go buy a can of beer at 7:30am, in case they might think I'm about to drink it at that hour.

Anyway, I later realised that the stew is better if you start it the night before. Meat and beer in overnight, add veg morning or midday.

Another gorgeous easy slow cooker meal is a turkey drumstick. Highly recommended as a holiday meal for 2-3 people, especially on a budget. It comes out really gorgeous and costs about £2.

Only downside is that my slow cooker is smallish and I have to break the end of the drumstick to make it fit. Maybe a thigh would be worth trying instead.

elmosducks · 10/11/2019 06:48

Also good in slow cooker is coq au vin, beef adobo, sesame chicken and sausage stew

NerdyCurvyInkedandPervy · 10/11/2019 08:58

Just make sure to brown sausages before putting them in the slow cooker otherwise they have a tendency to look like flaccid penises (penii?) and that's never a good look!

userxx · 10/11/2019 11:34

@NerdyCurvyInkedandPervy 🤣🤣. So so true.

FabledBunny · 10/11/2019 12:19

I put a jar of cheap honey in and sprinkle some really dark brown sugar in plus push a few cloves into the gammon joint aswell and just turn it occasionally - got one cooking as we speak! Bloody lush

wontletmelogin · 10/11/2019 12:24

Definitely trying this this week! I've fallen in love with my slow cooker again. Having beef casserole in it today and will have chinese ribs later in the week too.

What do you serve with your gammon? If I buy steaks I usually go egg and chips.

fedup21 · 10/11/2019 12:27

Ps you will need enough coke to cover the gammon or it will dry out/ not cook through evenly

Noooo-I cook this loads and never cover the whole piece of gammon. Just a couple of inches of coke/cider is fine.

Marshmallow91 · 10/11/2019 12:38

I've stuck some star anise in it, and covered with orange juice and pineapple juice. Absolutely beautiful
