Slow cooker and coke

Pippa12 · 08/11/2019 06:50

Is it true you can put a gammon joint in the slow cooker with a can of coke and leave it to cook? Has anybody done this, does it taste awful?

I just did this yesterday. Cheap Aldi full fat coke, ham fillet. Made holes in fillet so that seeps right through. Mashed potato and green beans.

Stillfunny · 08/11/2019 11:11

And any left over- pulled pork sandwiches for lunch.

Shannith · 08/11/2019 12:16

So going to do this. I always forget you can do it in a slow cooker.

PotteringAlong · 08/11/2019 12:35

If you use a jar of pataks paste, stewing steak, a chopped onion and 2 tins of tomatoes you get a foolproof and very tasty curry in the slow cooker too!

Pulled port is made with mustard and bbq sauce, sugar and chili powered

It’s different to ham hock

We do cider and black treacle - divine

Flappyfishy · 08/11/2019 12:39

We did this on Wednesday this week and used the BBC good Food recipe with the glaze.

IT WAS AMAZING!

charactersonclothesaretrashy · 08/11/2019 12:42

Should the ham be completely covered or half covered? How many cans of coke should I use?

Sparklypurpleunicornsaremyfav · 08/11/2019 12:43

Ginger beer is amazing too

imnottoofussed · 08/11/2019 12:44

Tell me more about the cider and treacle method please

BinkySodPlop · 08/11/2019 12:47

I know friends who have cooked in JD and Coke. The alcohol evaporates, and leaves a smokey taste.

averythinline · 08/11/2019 18:52

I don't cover in coke just turn occasionally although usually small apple juice carton

MitziK · 08/11/2019 19:39

Depends on the size of lump of pig, as you need to be able to cover all of it (or turn it over halfway through).

Put pig lump in SC. Chuck on coke. Throw in whole peppercorns, a star anise, cinnamon stick, a good pinch of cumin or caraway, three bay leaves and some thyme if you have it. A few juniper berries work well, too. Switch it on. Walk away.

If you feel the need, you could roast it afterwards with some bitter marmalade and some syrup from a jar of stem ginger, but life's too short to cook meat more than once in my opinion - unless it's stupidly salty/you don't like it that salty, in which case you'll benefit from bringing it up to the boil from cold in plain water first.

PomBearWithAnOFRS · 08/11/2019 20:39

Or just get a bag of brown sugar, put about a third in the bottom under the joint and tip the rest over the top.
Or use ginger beer, that's nice too.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 08/11/2019 20:47

I use a can of ginger beer, brown sugar, worcestershire sauce, spoon of tomato puree, all spice and honey (salt and pepper). It's a bit like a BBQ sauce. I use it in the slow cooker with either gammon or pork shoulder (it makes good pulled pork)

IdleBet · 08/11/2019 20:55

I do it with 2 litres of cheap full fat cola, totally cover the gammon, in the slowie for hours. It's lovely. Proper coke doesn't taste the same. Cheapo cola gives that hint of cola lolly ices from when you were a kid.

Pinkyyy · 08/11/2019 20:58

This sounds amazing but I don't have a slow cooker :( is it possible in an oven?

nocoolnamesleft · 08/11/2019 21:02

I chuck in an onion, a vegetable stock pot, loads of cinnamon, a bit of cayenne, and enough cherry coke to cover the ham. When it's cooked, I lift it out, and put a spice/sugar mix on the fat, and stick it in the over for 30 - 40 mins. Bloody gorgeous. (You don't have to do the oven stage, but it does make it even better...means you get crispy bits as well as the melt in the mouth bits)

tealandteal · 08/11/2019 21:03

You can also make amazing bbq pulled pork in the slow cooker, great in wraps. I'm going to try the coke thing.

Tartyflette · 08/11/2019 21:13

I cook my Christmas ham (usually half a whole gammon) in a roasting tin in the oven, under a tent of foil. Covered loosely but tucked in all the way round the tin, IYSWIM. I do it at Gas mark 4.
You pour water/stock/coke etc over the ham but obviously you can't cover the whole piece of meat unless it's quite small or your tin/dish is deep. The foil keeps it moist in its own steam..
I usually give it around 30 mins a pound or about an hour per kilo.
Then I take the foil off, spread some mustard and brown sugar over the meat then give it another 30-40 minutes in a hottish oven, (6?) basting like mad.
Other flavourings are available.

Tartyflette · 08/11/2019 21:14

That was for Pinkyyy

Pinkyyy · 08/11/2019 21:21

Thank you @Tartyflette, that sounds amazing!!

IdleBet · 08/11/2019 21:24

Forgot to say then crisp it up in the oven for an hour to caramelise.

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 08/11/2019 21:25

Yes you can if you want to ruin a joint of gammon. It's disgusting. Just cover it in water and leave it to cook. No need to add cola to a nice peice of gammon .

5LeafClover · 08/11/2019 21:28

I have tried slow cook jacket spuds. They don't taste/ go fluffy like oven ones and the middle discolours slightly.
