Slow cooker and coke

Is it true you can put a gammon joint in the slow cooker with a can of coke and leave it to cook? Has anybody done this, does it taste awful?

I never cover mine either, i make sure i turn it a few times and its fine, never dry!

We cover ours with ginger beer instead of coke and then roast it for 10 minutes with ginger conserve on it. Its gorgeous done like that.

Just to give you a starting point. If it sounds American then Spruce Eats usually have a version of every recipe you want. I started with this and then modified it year on year. We also use cider not cola now

you will need enough coke to cover the gammon or it will dry out/ not cook through evenly I'm another one shouting Noooooooooooooooo! Your sloco acts as a steamer, you don't need all that cola - though the BBC Good Food version has 2L of coke that you pr down the sink when finished!

Ginger beer and ginger consrve you say? Mmm! That might be this years variation sorted Grin

JorisBonson · 11/11/2019 12:57

Inspired by this, I've had a gammon joint and a bottle of rolla cola in the slow cooker since 9.30.

Thinking I'll take some of the coke, put some honey / sugar / spices in after about 8 hours and make some sort of glaze?

userxx · 11/11/2019 18:58

@JorisBonson That sounds nice, has it turned out ok?

JorisBonson · 12/11/2019 14:35

It did not. Instead of lovely soft pork we had big ol' slices of gammon. Thinking a slightly better joint is needed for next time.

I did make a nice glaze though by boiling down some of the coke / onion / garlic rapidly with s a bit of stock

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/11/2019 17:31

Oh dear! But that was never going to work with gammon as that has already been soaked and brined.

Better luck next time with a cheap cut of pork. Don't let it put you off!

JorisBonson · 12/11/2019 19:07

I'll definitely do it again but I will spend more than £3 (I am tight)

CuriousaboutSamphire · 12/11/2019 22:52

Grin You'd have to be, why else own a sloco in the first place?

Do you have a proper butcher near you? You'd surprised how cheap a large cut of not prime roasting pork can be - even after the telly chefs have been promoting it! It can be a lot cheaper than any supermarket, Lidl and Aldi included.

busybarbara · 13/11/2019 01:59

I do it all the time and have even used Coke Zero with no negative effect

EL8888 · 13/11/2019 02:01

Oh yes! It’s yum. An alternative is ginger beer. Make sure you use the full fat drinks -no diet stuff!
