To wonder what the worst swear word is?

To wonder how swear words vary in severity. To me, I think they’re all as bad as each other however, some believe that bitch, for example, is mild and not as bad as fuck.

OP posts:
ShagMeRiggins · 15/10/2019 21:37

aye Tom's a good cunt

Yes. All swear words can and are used with affection. Even the racist slurs.

It’s a mad language, is English.

My hackles tend to rise less with swear words than with real words: lazy, stupid, useless, selfish, worthless, good-for-nothing, ugly, fat, low-life, trash, chav, pig.

Someone calling me a cunt gives me a lot of information about that person. Someone calling me selfish gives me information about that person and about me.

HEMammajamma · 15/10/2019 21:39

Cockcheese? Twatspangle

Some of these are so odd, they are extremely funny to me!

HEMammajamma · 15/10/2019 21:41

I agree @ShagMeRiggins

Ellisandra · 15/10/2019 21:42

@QueefLatifah as @BillyAndTheSillies says, it’s Jamaican origin. The guy I heard hissing it on the bus was wearing Jamaican colours.
I wouldn’t have known how offensive it was if I hadn’t read a book about swearing (the OP’s chart looks very familiar so may have been lifted from the book for the article!). So that knowledge probably impacted me - but honestly, this guy was just vile, so aggressive.

I particularly don’t like it, as I don’t like insults being tied to something which is specific to women. I used to dislike cunt for the same reason - but think it’s transcended that meaning now to be a more general explanation! I dislike bitch for the same reason. I like to use arsehole, as it’s gender neutral Grin

ShagMeRiggins · 15/10/2019 21:42

For the record, I wouldn’t mind being called a cunt. Actually, it would amuse me and makes me laugh. (I’ve never been called a cunt to my face.)

cacklingmags · 15/10/2019 21:43

Cunt is lovely in every way and I use it all the time. Blood Clot is very unpleasant and slag and slut or slapper are fucking horrible.

ddl1 · 15/10/2019 21:44

I think it's more how a word is used. If a word is used as a general expletive ('oh fuck!') it is much less offensive that if it's used to express annoyance with an individual ('fuck off and leave me alone!'), which in turn is much less offensive than using it to intimidate (standing over a smaller/ physically weaker person and screaming 'FUCK OFF IF YOU KNOW WHAT'S FUCKING GOOD FOR YOU!') Personally, I have a bit of a weird-phobia reaction to the word 'shitty' (not to 'shit' itself so much). But like ShagMeRiggins, I'm more bothered by real words than swear words, as the former are much more likely to be meant literally.

Cantrememberpassword · 15/10/2019 21:45

C U N T .

MyBlueMoonbeam · 15/10/2019 21:50

The c word a the last resort for me & only to be used in extreme circumstances 😏

I do say "cunty fucker" quite a lot whilst driving however 🙈

GladAllOver · 15/10/2019 21:51

Bre*xit

HEMammajamma · 15/10/2019 21:52

@MyBlueMoonbeam I used to think CF meant county fucker. Glad I never used it fully till I learnt what it really meant Grin

HEMammajamma · 15/10/2019 21:54

Cunty* not county, ffs!

EmmiJay · 15/10/2019 22:02

Calling a man a bitch gets the desired result more time. Theres not really anyword that makes me blush. True heathen here.

BooFuckingHoo2 · 15/10/2019 22:10

Bitch

I often here men/women call men/women cunts but the word bitch I find is reserved for a special kind of vitriol directed at a woman from a man.

I’ve heard a man call another man a “little bitch” in a jokey way, and a woman call another woman a “bitch” but for me, the most vile, misogynist expression I’ve ever heard is when a man calls a woman a bitch.

Mum2jenny · 15/10/2019 22:13

I personally consider motherfucker to be worse than cunt.

Ffsnosexallowed · 15/10/2019 22:14

I've heard fuck in work. I'd be v surprised to hear motherfucker. If someone said cunt they'd be sacked.

TinDogTavern · 15/10/2019 22:16

To be fair @temeraire, I would love it if they started using cunt on Bake Off.

"I don't know what I was thinking, Sandi, I put way too much icing sugar in my meringue, and cunted it right up".

QueefLatifah · 15/10/2019 22:20

Eurgh thanks for clearing that up . That’s repulsive.

Cunt. It has to be. Find myself using it a lot these days. It seems so appropriate for so many people.

cheeseislife8 · 15/10/2019 22:34

I love a good swear and I use 'fuck' A LOT but 'cunt' has never felt comfortable for me to say for some reason

Pimmsypimms · 15/10/2019 22:35

Definitely a c-bomb. Never use that word. Do say fuck a bit too much tho Confused

honeylulu · 15/10/2019 22:36

Motherfucker and Suck yo mum are the vilest and most offensive in my opinion. (I also consider any racist terms as offensive but not necessarily "swearing").

Cunt I rather like. I am bemused that a slang word for the female genitals is thought to be the worst possible thing. I think we should reclaim the word cunt. Cunts have warmth and depth. Cunts bring life into the world. Cunts bring great pleasure and satisfaction to their owners and their partners. I say cunt a lot. Cunty cunty cunt. Ah, that feels better.

Thurmanmurman · 15/10/2019 22:43

For me it’s bitch. I think it’s because a man might call another man a twat or a cunt but would only ever refer to a woman as a bitch. It’s a specific insult to women which is why I find it more offensive than other swear words.

Finfintytint · 15/10/2019 22:46

Definitely Cunt. I use the word vary sparingly and it is only applied to certain users of the A483 for anyone who knows that road.
