To hate Red Magazine after years of loving it

Yes I know buying magazines is wasteful and unnecessary but I always enjoyed Red and in the olden days Easy Living magazines.

Red now seems to be going all arty photos and hipster. I am I just too old now? Is that it. Do I need to move on to Woman and Home ? I am not high fashion enough for Vogue

What mags do you read?

Glamour still exists, but I think they only publish quarterly now. Latest one has Victoria Beckham on the cover.

This thread is like a bittersweet walk down memory lane. I miss all the magazines l read growing up. They were a huge part of my life.

Real, for great features and grown up glamour. Why ever did it disappear??

More magazine for affordable fashion and quick reads.

Also, eve magazine which was down to earth. I haven't thought of NewWoman for years!!

The old Bella magazines, new ones are nowhere near as good.

Also really miss company magazine. Can't believe that went under, loved the fashion and features and always came with great freebies.

I have a stack of Red magazines from years ago and the September one I bought just doesn't compare.

The only one i enjoy now is Grazia, but the amount celeb gossipy features are a bit of a turn off.
There is a real gap in the market for great magazines for under 50s. Perhaps mumsnetters should set one up?

Floralhousecoat · 27/09/2019 13:18

I don't bother with Cosmo and Glamour at all now.

I remember buying the last ever issue of Eve magazine. It came with a great Avon mascara, they said in the editor's letter they wanted to give their readers a parting gift.

evilharpy · 27/09/2019 13:35

I used to love Glamour, I miss it.

At the end of last year I subscribed to Cosmopolitan for six months (I think) purely to get a Nivea freebie. I didn't mind the magazine but didn't like it enough to keep the subscription going. At least most of the clothes were vaguely affordable.

Also quite like Grazia. The rest just don't interest me. Although I'd rather flick through Harpers than Take a Break at the hairdressers.

I don't know how much longer magazines will be around, they're a bit like Thomas Cook in that they haven't moved with the times (not meant in a goady way - just that so much content is available for free on the internet that there's little reason for people to need them nowadays). My friend is a print designer who used to do a lot of magazine work and says work has dried up and jobs are few and far between, and is having to train herself to do more digital stuff.

HelenaDove · 27/09/2019 16:10

Floral it was a No 7 one.

HelenaDove · 27/09/2019 16:13

Like i said i still enjoy Red every month and it was good to see an article by a child free by choice woman in the September issue.

I loved it under Sam Bakers editorship.

HelenaDove · 27/09/2019 16:15

i also remember free scarves and umbrellas that were Eve freebies.

Trewser · 27/09/2019 16:18

I now know how to decorate my living room cheaply like the inside of a spaceship, whilst leaving a corner free for the ghosts
🤣🤣🤣

Floralhousecoat · 27/09/2019 16:20

@HelenaDove it may be that various different mascaras were given out, I had an Avon Supershock one which was actually great.

I agree Red had it's heyday under Sam's editorship.

This thread has also reminded me of She magazine. Such great magazines, all gone.

HelenaDove · 27/09/2019 16:25

Yes I bought She a couple of times too.

Oct18mummy · 27/09/2019 16:30

I get Red delivered and I have months I haven’t read. This months came through I think I read one interesting article on Lenny Henry and the rest of the magazine skimmed through and nothing grabbed me. It used to be full of really interesting lifestyle stories etc and now just interviews with celebs. Think will cancel subscription

Floralhousecoat · 27/09/2019 16:31

This thread has also reminded me of Essentials magazine. Long gone.

Look magazine shut down only recently. I used to enjoy that, it was like a cross between Company and More magazines.

BirthdayCakes · 27/09/2019 17:09

When will people heel my call to Country Living?

Just look at the pictures if the articles annoy you (like they do me)

HelenaDove · 27/09/2019 18:07

Lenny Henry isnt in it.

JustDanceAddict · 27/09/2019 18:13

I loved New Woman too.
I occasionally buy Closer if I feel like a crap read as it has TV guide too.
I was. Red fan but haven’t bought a glossy for ages. I would buy Psychologies for holiday read maybe?

Girasole02 · 27/09/2019 18:26

Have tried all the popular ones and none of them feel written for me 45, straight, white, professional, petite side of average, not especially bothered about loads of material possessions or being bang on trend. I spend my magazine money now on loading up my kindle.

Tippety · 27/09/2019 18:47

Some libraries offer free access to online magazines, most of the usual suspects are on there, could maybe try a few and see which ones you enjoy? You can download to a tablet etc with your library membership.

Oct18mummy · 28/09/2019 09:03

@HelenaDove he is page 46 November 2019 issue

HelenaDove · 29/09/2019 00:11

Oh i forgot subscribers got it early Sorry .

Whos on the cover?

Verily1 · 29/09/2019 08:26

I loved magazines but they are so expensive now!

I can buy a book cheaper.

I miss a good article though.

Cosmo is the only non celeb rag that’s a decent price these days do sometimes I buy that even though I’m old enough to be the mother of their target audience! Think I started reading that at 15!

Oct18mummy · 29/09/2019 20:31

@HelenaDove it’s Julianne Moore

EmpressLesbianInChair · 29/09/2019 20:38

I used to read take a break, chat, pick me up etc but lately I feel they re all much the same and don t relate to my life.

I walk past them in the supermarket & their covers mess with my head. A woman with a beaming smile, right next to ‘My boyfriend cheated on me with my mum’ or ‘I married an axe murderer.’ Talk about cognitive dissonance.

HelenaDove · 29/09/2019 20:40

Ta.

Forgotmycoat · 30/09/2019 19:52

I enjoy the Fabulous magazine that comes free with the Sun on Sundays. It's nice for a quick read I find and always has good health features on a variety of issues.
