To hate Red Magazine after years of loving it

merrygoround51 · 24/09/2019 16:14

Yes I know buying magazines is wasteful and unnecessary but I always enjoyed Red and in the olden days Easy Living magazines.

Red now seems to be going all arty photos and hipster. I am I just too old now? Is that it. Do I need to move on to Woman and Home ? I am not high fashion enough for Vogue

What mags do you read?

What annoys me about Good Housekeeping and Woman and Home are their very soft interviews with UK celebrities who usually have a new film, book or tv series upcoming.
Often they have had procedures done but gush about the skincare they use ( or flog ) and their healthy lifestyle.
HmmHmmHmmAngry
Call it as it is.
I look like this because I've had botox, fillers and other interventions.

I do love Country Living, it makes me feel cozy, and it is aspirational without making me feel inadequate!

SerenDippitty · 26/09/2019 08:44

What irritates me about GH is that as far as they are concerned women without children don’t seem to exist!

DianneWhatcock · 26/09/2019 08:53

I miss glamour magazine ! That was really good

awaynboilyurheid · 26/09/2019 09:07

It’s always the same celebs they have in GH Fern Britton,Helen Mirren, Dawn French,Lorraine Kelly and then repeat These celeb woman have no idea of lives of many woman Articles that talk about how they have great lives travelling the world or slowing down in retirement living best lives in Cornwall or some place drive me nuts!
They need to do more articles on inequalities in woman’s health or pensions etc and less on I gave up my career to run a insert craft activity here and did it with some “savings” and the other oft repeated articles. Also the pages on perfumes just why?? Now when I think of it maybe I should buy Socialist worker instead Grin

You forgot Lulu.
And Michelle Mone
And Karen Brady
And Twiggy
And Cilla when she was alive.

beanaseireann · 26/09/2019 09:59

Oops and Holly Willoughby

Whitney168 · 26/09/2019 10:23

I miss Easy Living ...

Red is the nearest, and it does have good months, but more often it's too navel-gazing and clothes are a bit daft. Like others though, feel GH/W&H are too old.

I read plenty of books, but I do like a magazine for dipping in and out when just want a quick read - but am close to giving up on them.

Amen!

Livpool · 26/09/2019 11:25

Ooh @DianneWhatcock I loved Glamour - I was gutted when they stopped it

Livpool · 26/09/2019 11:26

New Woman too!

God I feel old

MissLadyM · 26/09/2019 11:32

Get Pressreader free through the library! I read newspapers & mags from all over the world. It's brilliant

escapade1234 · 26/09/2019 11:37

They stopped InStyle didn’t they? I enjoyed that and bought it every month in my 20s.

I feel like I see Julie Walters a fair bit on the cover of GH. I was also going to post about Dawn French and Fern Britten. The usual suspects.

merrygoround51 · 26/09/2019 11:54

Livpool I remember New Woman.

I forgot to mention Vanity Fair, which I also find has gone off the boil. I think I am just old .....

Serendipitty i agree. Good Housekeeping and Woman and Home seem to think we all have kids/grandkids.

Red did an article/interview with a woman about choosing to be child free in the September issue (which was out last month)

HelenaDove · 26/09/2019 14:54

awayboily The Boots magazine have an article on the gender health gap in the current issue. Its also on their site.

DianneWhatcock · 26/09/2019 16:59

Ah yeah @Livpool new woman was wicked !!

QueenofLouisiana · 26/09/2019 17:19

Another Readly subscriber. I read the ones about France, the history ones, whichever gossip of fashion ones appeal each week.

It saves us a fortune, reduces waste and means all three of us (plus my mum who uses a spare login) always have things to read.

JuneFromBethesda · 26/09/2019 17:48

I'm another one here who can't stomach women's magazines any more. Sounds like there are a lot of us in our 40s who remember when women's mags were good - I used to buy a lot as well. Now they just seem like a lot of advertising and flannel, and utterly unrelatable.

My guilty secret is Country Life magazine. I buy it very rarely but I love it, it's such escapism (I don't live in the country - and don't actually want to!) My favourite thing is drooling over the big country estates for sale and deciding which one I'd buy Grin

JuneFromBethesda · 26/09/2019 17:52

Also I'm a Luddite - same thing with Kindles - I know I can read magazines and books online but I like the experience of curling up with the physical product ...

I used to work for a Big Museum and Country Life was on the circulation list from the library due to all the auctions and coverage of art etc. I managed to add myself to the distribution list - I love Tottering-by-Gently!

PrivateSpidey · 26/09/2019 20:02

Grin now that's more like it!

I do think there is a gap in the market though for decent women's mags with a good combination of enjoyable fluff and more thought-provoking content...

HelenaDove · 26/09/2019 21:00

New mag launch for women over 55. Platinum. They are saying there is a gap in the market for it Hmm WTF Where? There is GH and W and H

pressgazette.co.uk/dc-thomson-launches-new-monthly-magazine-platinum-for-women-over-55/

Meanwhile women under 50 have lost Eve She and Easy Living and Red is the only one that remains. THIS IS THE GAP.
