To hate Red Magazine after years of loving it

merrygoround51 · 24/09/2019 16:14

Yes I know buying magazines is wasteful and unnecessary but I always enjoyed Red and in the olden days Easy Living magazines.

Red now seems to be going all arty photos and hipster. I am I just too old now? Is that it. Do I need to move on to Woman and Home ? I am not high fashion enough for Vogue

What mags do you read?

The week is quite a good read..I had it for years until I did find i had read most of it online. Just had a offer for 6 issues for 6 quid so might do that.

beanaseireann · 25/09/2019 11:42

I used to be a very keen magazine reader- Red, Tatler, Marie Claire, Harpers, Good Housekeeping, Woman and Home, Easy Living. Others too that have gone.
I rarely bother now.
Mumsnet is like a a really big, wide ranging magazine read. There's something for everyone.

SerenDippitty · 25/09/2019 12:29

I used to be an avid reader of Woman, Woman’s Own, Best, but I think they’re just rags now, nothing but diets and celebrity gossip.

For interest I have some old mags - here are a Red from 12 years ago, a She from 20 years ago and a Best from 30 years ago.

I like grazia

I still read cosmo as well at 39 (although it makes me feel old!)

DianneWhatcock · 25/09/2019 12:37

Oh and I bought top Sante the other day, thought it might be good as i am interested in health and fitness, only to find it was full of thinly disguised advertorials and scaremongering

Absolute pile of total bollocks that was

littlehappyhippo · 25/09/2019 12:39

New Scientist

Psychologies

Take a Break

The Stage

The Writers Forum

I don't get every single issue that comes out, but I get all of these sometimes. Smile

littlehappyhippo · 25/09/2019 12:39

Ooops, forgot. I sometimes get National Geographic too.

DianneWhatcock · 25/09/2019 12:41

Oh and I hate the likes of Closer magazine, articles preaching loving your body shape and looks whether you are big, small, young, old, whatever...etc then endless pics worshipping celebs in their bikinis and z list celebs telling us all "how I got my bikini body" and shit like that

pure hypocrisy, now my older daughter is are getting towards the teen years (and already insecure about her looks) I wont have them in the house

Binting · 25/09/2019 12:43

You can try Readly for a month at 99p and cancel any time gb.readly.com/?utm_source=sa360&utm_medium=ppc&utm_campaign=gb_autumn19&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=Cj0KCQjwoKzsBRC5ARIsAITcwXE3OZWfGfvnl4xD9P7T9q8eSlBd3pCwAl9G-5ZfFgj5XImOhXb1cr0aAo6LEALw_wcB

I know that link looks very long. But it does work 🙂

Divebar · 25/09/2019 12:45

These are all very mainstream titles though.... there do appear to be loads which are a bit more “ indie” perhaps. I don’t tend to buy them because they’re pretty pricey but I have bought The Simple Things and “ Love”. Probably my favourite is Frankie which is an Australian title which is quite quirky. There was also one called The Gentlewoman as I recall. None are the same as the old Red but they offer an alternative to that very mainstream predictable read.

Swisskit · 25/09/2019 12:45

Our local library offers Pressreader and RBDigital which are apps. You can read literally thousands of newspapers and magazines FOR FREE!!

Definitely worth checking out.

FlaviaAlbia · 25/09/2019 12:50

Check your local library, mine does an e magazine service so you can check them out and read them for free on your device. It's got all the big names for most genres and loads of obscure ones too.

I'm not sure if not many people use it or they have unlimited copies but I've never been unable to check one out.

Herocomplex · 25/09/2019 12:54

Flavia I’ve had that problem, I deleted the app then re-downloaded it, but you can email the library and get some advice. There’s also a troubleshooting guide for most of the apps.

SayOohLaLa · 25/09/2019 12:59

I stopped reading Red when I realised I had no chance of buying the sort of fashion they included in features - £150 handbags etc.

If I get a magazine it's the Lady because I can dip into features as and when. You have to watch out for themed issues (the one on Wills / retirement was a bit much) but it's otherwise a good read.

HouseworkAvoider10 · 25/09/2019 13:01

I remember eve.
I bought it right up until it was discontinued in 2009.
I used to read Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, Red, Company and Glamour, not all in the same month though.
I used to be utterly obsessed with magazines especially fashion, and I would devour them.
i would have bought every single fashion magazine, if only I could have afforded it.
The internet killed it for me.
over time, I switched to online and I lost interest in paper magazines. now I only buy Vogue occasionally.

SerenDippitty · 25/09/2019 13:03

Marie Claire has gone entirely on line now I think.

MyCatsHat · 25/09/2019 13:04

I read Grazia, New Scientist and some industry mags that I like. I will buy a Red or Marie Claire if I'm feeling especially vacuous and just want to flick through picks of dresses, but I do find them annoying.

I found a cosmo recently in a cafe and read that, and was surprised to find that despite all the sex stuff, it had a more mature and witty tone than Red etc. Likewise Good Housekeeping! My friend recommended that, and I sometimes get it if I like the cover star.

I like Grazia a lot, it's funny, political and good for culture stuff. the fashion is a bit silly but I still enjoy it.

I STILL miss New Woman though it closed aeons ago. Someone very subversive was in charge there and it was hilarious. I'll never forget a pic of some celeb wedding and they had the caption "Love and marriage, love and marriage, go together like a horse and cabbage" :o

SerenDippitty · 25/09/2019 13:05

Does anyone else remember Real? Came out in the 90s, fortnightly, seemed a good balance between the weeklies and monthly glossies but didn’t last long.

Starryskye · 25/09/2019 13:07

Not sure this belongs in the AIBU thread Confused

Aderyn19 · 25/09/2019 13:15

I miss old Red, She, Eve and Easy Living (naff title though). You could try Elle.

JemSynergy · 25/09/2019 13:22

I can't remember the last time I bought a magazine. The only time I read them now is when I'm at the hair salon. Years ago I used to buy NOW magazine every Thursday and it was £1. I used to also buy home interior magazines, but I just feel that most of the information is quickly obtained from the internet now.

gowgow · 25/09/2019 13:25

I use the library - free access to dozens of e-magazines & e-books online.

OneOf · 25/09/2019 13:26

I used to read them all. Cost a fortune. Then I realised they were the same recycled garbage month in month out.

Stopped all of them about ten years ago. I know a freelance journalist who submits fake stuff to Take A Break once in a while and gets a few hundred quid for 'sleb gossip'.

I also realised that I was paying them so they could advertise to me. Great business model they have there. I reckon they take on a few interns and aspiring writers to do the grunt work and the real journos do their editorial flourish and get all the freebie trips and nights out.

And I wasn't thinner, smarter or more attractive when I did read them. Just more gullible.

Also don't buy red top newspapers any more. Just bullshit tarted up for the masses. DS was featured in a news story a few years back. What they wrote bore absolutely no resemblance to the interview he gave.

HouseworkAvoider10 · 25/09/2019 13:36

oh I used to love new woman.
I forgot about that.

Wexone · 25/09/2019 13:45

I used to buy about 10 magazines a weeek but got to the stage that there was so much crap in them and most were the same as other magazines so now i limit myslef to three magazines which i read from cover to cover
Bella, Women and Grazia
Grazia is my facaourite as covers fashion beuty but also good features too
My mother in law gives me here Hello (She loves the royal Family) and Country magazine
