To hate Red Magazine after years of loving it

merrygoround51 · 24/09/2019 16:14

Yes I know buying magazines is wasteful and unnecessary but I always enjoyed Red and in the olden days Easy Living magazines.

Red now seems to be going all arty photos and hipster. I am I just too old now? Is that it. Do I need to move on to Woman and Home ? I am not high fashion enough for Vogue

What mags do you read?

@binting

Thank you so much for the Readily tip.

I have an enforced recovery period coming up (all fine, just a bit restricted) and this will be really useful.

I also recognise and used to enjoy many of the same names, New Woman, Easy Living, Eve, She etc
Even Red used to be a bit more substantial. I stopped buying when they hit the £3 stage and the content became so samey.
I do still enjoy the occasional splurge though!

Missingsandraohingreys · 25/09/2019 13:56

I hate Red
Their tones and assumptions massively grate on me

I am not rich , not a hipster and can’t afford their products
I don’t live in a Victorian house , and I don’t have time for yoga

Other magazines have a more down to earth humorous tone

Missingsandraohingreys · 25/09/2019 13:57

And am
Fucking tired of seeing Ferne whatsherface getting paid for articles about mental health

Ask the poor woman who came to me
Distraught asking for money yesterday
In hysterical tears

That’s a crisis . Why do we only listen to pretty famous victims

3luckystars · 25/09/2019 14:00

Grazia magazine is good and my sister told me they are the first to print the real stories.

Basketofkittens · 25/09/2019 14:09

I like Red, it’s Cosmo I feel that I’ve grown out of! I sometimes buy Grazia.

Don’t think Marie-Claire is as good now and that’s going digital only. I used to like Glamour but that’s gone now. Does anybody remember 19?

PrivateSpidey · 25/09/2019 14:20

Same OP. I subscribed for years and cancelled about 18 months ago. It's such a shame, I used to love it.

My main problem with it more recently was the celebrity covers and interviews (gah!! Mostly unbearable) and stuff about eg "curating a beautiful bedside table" with leather-covered journals and beautiful jewellery trays etc Hmm when mine would be so rubbish (eg some hair clips, a book, some Lego minifigures and half a cup of cold tea).

It just didn't "speak" to me anymore, as the saying goes, and I don't know if I changed, or if it did (probably both).

I don't really read magazines much these days - although I do like Your Home because it doesn't take itself too seriously. Some of the film magazines I like although don't buy them often tbh. And the Christmas food mags as a PP said.

SerenDippitty · 25/09/2019 14:20

Just created an account with my library card and downloaded the RB app. It’s brilliant, wish I’d done it before! Will never buy a magazine again.

DogHasEatenTheSqueaker · 25/09/2019 14:36

Just downloaded the Readly app! Thanks for this thread 👍

ImAShowPony · 25/09/2019 14:51

I used to like Grazia but now I just laugh at it- the fashion victims and the Smash Hits style writing.

user1471515926 · 25/09/2019 15:34

I would heartily recommend the Sainsbury's Magazine actually. It has a really good variety of articles- food (obvs), health, travel, books etc. They don't just advertise their own stuff either.
I'm the sort if person who tends to flick over alot of the fashion/accessories/makeup stuff in traditional female mags, and find this one a good read (I'm 45 and just cancelled my Good Housekeeping subscription because I found them so repetitive).

CottonSock · 25/09/2019 15:50

@user87382294757, can you just buy it in store?

Smokeyrobinson · 25/09/2019 15:54

Yes I agree - Red just isn’t the same. I’ve cancelled my subscription.

HelenaDove · 25/09/2019 17:03

I still buy and read Red every month. Have done for 11 years. I was an Eve reader too. I loved it The final issue was the November 2008 one. I have a good memory. Anyone else remember Scarlet? Prior to Eve i was a New Woman reader They seemed to go all celeb though I still have one of the NW CDs.

I remember when Now first launched in the 90s it was a bit closer to a Grazia type mag. Also bought Real the fortnightly one.

I still get and read Red every month and enjoy it but it was better before.

I wish some of the old articles from Eve , Real , New Woman etc would get put up online You would think that would happen on some sort of website as nostalgia is big business . There is a mag called Yours Retro which always seems to sell out.

Ive tried Good Housekeeping and Woman and Home but they feel too old for me even though im 46. Ive bought the last two issues of Woman and Home.

Woman and Home did carry an article/interview with a trans widow over the summer. Not many publications have done that.

Lagatha · 25/09/2019 17:11

@PrivateSpidey your bedside table sounds like mine.
Who curates a fucking bedside table lol Grin

HelenaDove · 25/09/2019 17:11

IMO the mags that have changed the most are the weekly ones. Best is a good example of this.

I also went through a stage of buying Woman and Womans Own in my 20s They were totally different mags then. They would have soap stars on the cover and big interviews. Including Neighbours which i was into then. But the soaps have also changed beyond recognition. I no longer watch them except for Classic Corrie on ITV3

Wilmalovescake · 25/09/2019 17:26

Whoever posted about the free library access- THANK YOU!!!

PrivateSpidey · 25/09/2019 17:28

Lagatha I know!! Grin When I read it I was just like "Come on!!" I know it's meant to be aspirational etc but it has to be vaguely realistic as well!!

CSIblonde · 25/09/2019 17:29

I used to read loads: Look, Heat, Hello, Take a Break (at the hairdressers) ,Vogue, Good Housekeeping, and Cosmo . Thing is, after a while they're all very repetitive in whatever their main focus is, whether that's tabloidy real life stories or how to be 'better' or bloody perfect or, how to look/dress like a size zero 18 year old. I prefer books now, on anything & everything (crime , history, psychology, horror, decor etc,).

littlehappyhippo · 26/09/2019 00:01

Sorry if anyone has said this, but does anyone remember New Living magazine? That was good. Smile

littlehappyhippo · 26/09/2019 00:01

DAMN! I mean EASY LIVING magazine! Blush

Wellhelloxx11xx · 26/09/2019 00:04

None. They are all trash to me.

Sunshineboo · 26/09/2019 00:12

Is grazia still going? I used to find that a more interesting red albeit a while ago now

Nat6999 · 26/09/2019 00:34

I used to be the news agent's best customer, I bought every magazine going, She, New Woman, Essentials, Eve, Glamour, Vogue, Marie Claire, you name it I bought it. Now I sometimes buy Good Housekeeping, Prima or Woman & Home, but I feel that none of them cater for me or my interests, they seem too old for me with tips on how to look after grey hair & comfort a dinner party. I might be 53 but I'm not ready for that.

littlehappyhippo · 26/09/2019 00:40

@Nat6999 Oh I remember New Woman, that was so good.

I think I must have been thinking about that when I said New Living!

It was Easy Living and New Woman I liked!

escapade1234 · 26/09/2019 00:52

I'm 55 and feel 30 now the stylists have dressed me in a bright orange pantsuit with a large red chunky necklace!

😂 so true

My mum gets it. I like the Christmas edition, I enjoy browsing it in November and pretending my Christmas will look anything like theirs. Dreaming of a life in which I prepare breakfast bellinis on Christmas morning in my sparkly red cocktail dress while waiting for my smartly dressed friends and neighbours to drop by for an 8 course lunch by the 12 ft Christmas tree at a table groaning with exotic meats and 4 types of dessert.
