To wonder why foreign langage chat threads don't really happen on MN?

There must be tons of MNers who are bilingual/learning a language/want to brush up their rusty French or Spanish etc. Occasionally there's an attempt at starting a thread, but they always peter out really quickly.

I speak (and teach) French and German and would happily join in with threads in those languages (and help out anyone on the thread who was learning). But I'm also learning Spanish and would most of all love to be able to do MN chat in Spanish! I know there are FB groups etc for that sort of thing, but I'd much rather chat on a forum where I'm already comfortable and feel like I know the atmosphere/tone iyswim!

AIBU isn't really the best place for them. I thought there were specific forums within MN for this sort of thing (or I think there used to be?).

Dinosaurusmumnus · 21/09/2019 16:26

There was a Francais one that ran for les weeks et les weeks.

gruntley123 · 21/09/2019 16:32

Ich wuerde gerne deutsch sprechen, aber denke ich habe viel vergessen!

lazylinguist · 21/09/2019 16:39

Lockhart - I wasn't suggesting actually starting one on AIBU Grin. I just wondered whether I was being unreasonable to wonder why having foreign chats on MN wasn't more popular - hence my asking on AIBU.

Was there, Dinosaur? Must have missed that!

lazylinguist · 21/09/2019 16:41

Kein Problem, gruntley! Ich vergesse oft Wörter auf Spanisch, aber ich will trotzdem sprechen!

Hola ,como estas?

No idea how right that is, but I'll give anything a go,even my rusty spanish.Grin

There used to be loads of silly threads with Spanglish, Franglais and Italish stuff, but they peter out as it's a jokey thing that can only run for so long I suppose.
The Cunning Linguists threads were cool, but went tumbleweed. And Pedants' Corner was great until posters decided to use it for poking fun at other people's mistakes making their "teeth itch".

Me gusta tambien el Español, lo estudio por A-level.

Pero dovrei fare pratica di Italiano perché la mia grammatica é terribile e lo voglio insegnare a DS!

I'm an MFL teacher so I also like chatting in my other languages. However, I find things set up specifically "to speak X language" a little awkward. What are we supposed to talk about?

I prefer lurking on forums from other countries and discovering the slag all the natives use!

WyfOfBathe · 21/09/2019 17:38

PooWillyBumBum · 21/09/2019 17:38

I would love a thread like this. J’ai besoin de pratiquer le français. It would make my mumsnetting feel more wholesome...

IcedPurple · 21/09/2019 18:00

Surely there must be a policy that this board only uses English, since it would be impossible to moderate threads if you don't understand the language?

MotherFuckingLanguages · 21/09/2019 18:02

Aye any other MFL twcahers here Grin

Cherrysoup · 21/09/2019 18:22

Yup, French and Spanish teacher here. Looking forward to doing European Day of Languages and a spelling bee for KS3 next week!
