To wonder why foreign langage chat threads don't really happen on MN?

There must be tons of MNers who are bilingual/learning a language/want to brush up their rusty French or Spanish etc. Occasionally there's an attempt at starting a thread, but they always peter out really quickly.

I speak (and teach) French and German and would happily join in with threads in those languages (and help out anyone on the thread who was learning). But I'm also learning Spanish and would most of all love to be able to do MN chat in Spanish! I know there are FB groups etc for that sort of thing, but I'd much rather chat on a forum where I'm already comfortable and feel like I know the atmosphere/tone iyswim!

I did German at university...
Unpractised for 9 years I can pretty much manage to say danke.... 😂

Hoi DrPeppersPhD!

helloswellow · 25/09/2019 08:08

@WatchingTheMoon 반가워요! 한국어를 잘 못 해서 죄송해요. 저는 혼자서 한국어를 공부했어요. 그쪽은요?

WatchingTheMoon · 25/09/2019 08:28

남편은 한국사람여서 한국에 살아요. 하지만 시간이 많이 없어서 잘 못해요.

helloswellow · 25/09/2019 08:51

대박이다. 한국 어디에 사세요?

boldlygoingsomewhere · 25/09/2019 09:24

lekkerkroketje, ik spreek ook Nederlands met een beetje Frans. Ik woonde in Limburg (België) - Maastricht, Luik en Aachen allemaal makkelijk bereikbaar.

WatchingTheMoon · 26/09/2019 06:22

수도권에 사는데 이사하고 싶어요. 여기에 사람이 엄청 많아서 힘들어요. 일때문에 이사 못 해요.

한국에 방문 하셨나요?

helloswellow · 26/09/2019 07:24

그곳에서 아주 답답한 것 같아요. (I'm not sure this is right, I'm trying to say it must be very frustrating because it's so busy.) 언젠가는 한국에 가보고 싶어요. 아마도 제주도(요?)

SerenDippitty · 26/09/2019 07:42

Bore da @MsSweeney a @PentreBachCymraeg. Sut ydych chi?

MsSweeney · 26/09/2019 12:53

Tsampion! (Clywdais i y gair 'ma ar 'Rownd a Rownd') Grin

Hang on, I just Googled to check the spelling and it's being translated to 'chimpanzee' Confused

So, I'll stick to 'Da iawn, diolch' Smile

WatchingTheMoon · 27/09/2019 03:58

저는 제주도에 아직 가지 안 봤는데 가고 싶어요.

"아마도 제주도(요?)" As far as I've heard, you can probably drop the 요 there, or you can use it. As long as you're generally using it and not just yelling 안녕!!! at grandma's, it's ok. For example, if you end a sentence in 하니까 (because), you could say 하니까요 but I've more often heard people just leave it. It's kind of implicit that you're using it from the context of the rest of the sentence/conversation.

helloswellow · 27/09/2019 08:06

나는 제주도 사투리를 이해하지 못해요, 그리하여 나는 거기에 갈 걱정해요.

도와줘서 고마워요. I struggle with formalities so tend to err on the side of caution.

WatchingTheMoon · 27/09/2019 08:22

요즘에는 제주사람이 사투리 안 쓸 것 같아요. 그리고 관광객들은 많아서 제주 사람은 서울말 하는 것에 익숙해요. 걱정하지마세요~~ 제주 흑돼지 너무 맛있어요~

WatchingTheMoon · 27/09/2019 08:25

Formalities are hard but most people are forgiving of non native speakers. If anything, they get really excited if you say anything in Korea, to the extent that it can be quite uncomfortable at times.

Even with my PIL, they'll still say "wow your Korean is so good" because I said hi or good morning or can I have or whatever, which they've heard me say a million times and it can get quite stifling.

Sometimes my husband does throw in a 요 for me at the end of a sentence if I forget it though.

Me: 와, 갈비가 너무 맛있었어~~
Him: ...요

helloswellow · 27/09/2019 09:25

나는 돼지 고기를 먹지 않습니다. 그러나 제주 귤이 좋다고 들었습니다.

I find myself doing the -요 thing to my own sentences. Just in case. I never really get the opportunity to speak in Korean so this has been really fun! I still have a long way to go. My sentences are clunky and probably horrid to read but it's the trying thats important!
