To wonder why foreign langage chat threads don't really happen on MN?

There must be tons of MNers who are bilingual/learning a language/want to brush up their rusty French or Spanish etc. Occasionally there's an attempt at starting a thread, but they always peter out really quickly.

I speak (and teach) French and German and would happily join in with threads in those languages (and help out anyone on the thread who was learning). But I'm also learning Spanish and would most of all love to be able to do MN chat in Spanish! I know there are FB groups etc for that sort of thing, but I'd much rather chat on a forum where I'm already comfortable and feel like I know the atmosphere/tone iyswim!

I think the trouble with these threads is that they don't have a purpose beyond practicing language, and after a few comments, there isn't so much more to say. I reckon you need to find an interesting topic to talk about in the language to keep the conversation going. Like a TV series that posters can discuss in the target language.

(I'm a modern languages graduate, I couldn't resist!)

If I wanted to practice my German I'd go on a German parents' website. (Which would be quite cool because I wouldn't have to give backstory about why my kids started school at 6 or why they walk to school alone at 7 and don't wear a uniform, they do skiing but we're not posh etc). I come here for the English!

I've tried looking for a similar Spanish website to MN, but can't find anything I like the look of at all!

I think you may be right, sonjadog. Maybe what I need to do is find a Spanish forum dedicated to something I'm interested in. Still, my French thread in Chat (not cat Grin) is going quite nicely so far! It's true that there are lots of mistakes, and it would be impossible to correct all of them without making the thread very cluttered and slow, but then again even if you were chatting out loud to a native speaker, they are hardly going to correct every mistake you make!

Anyone else imagining MNHQ moderators frantically trying to Google Translate some of the less familiar language symbols posted above?😟😁

Ciao @Cittadina vivi in Italia o Inghilterra?

Like many (most) on this thread, I'm a languages graduate (French and Spanish) but have been in Italy for a million years (feels like)

BertieBotts · 22/09/2019 12:08

MN is not a moderated site, so there's no policy on language. Of course offensive posts can be removed but everything is not constantly monitored, it depends on user reports.
