I can only assume that it was EBD's way of shoehorning in some religion into the story in the absence of the usual school plays/prayers/visits to churches or plays/a life-threatening medical crisis causing people to contemplate the meaning of life.

I quite like the concept that Jack is generally shown being involved in the children's lives more than a stereotypical upper-middle class man of that era, but the whole tone of the 'talk' with Margot was for a much older child.

Heavens! Hadn't realised this thread was still going. (Was there at the start under a previous name.)

I've spent the past couple of months wishing I hadn't reread the whole set last summer - they'd have been perfect lockdown binge-fodder.

Took me ages to find the thread! I didn't mind the religion when it was Joey telling Phoebe that Christianity for her means helping others, or everyone praying for Phoebe's health, or even Jack telling Reg to take G-d as his partner (though paying for Reg's schooling was a bit much when he barely knew him), but you can't really have a deep philosophical discussion about religion with a toddler. And the bit where they confess their sins to Joey at bedtime creeps me out.

I’m on a mammoth reread at the moment and am resurrecting to ask @Parker231 whether she would mind sharing the transcript link as I’ve found I’m missing Rescue, and my hard copy is in another country!

Jassy, I also came on to see if anyone was still here and if I could get access to the Dropbox. I was on the first thread but life took over and I never got around to sending Parker my email. I've been rereading in order and need and Jo next. Maybe some absolute lamb will respond to us.

I’m sure Parker keeps an eye on this thread, but if by some chance you haven’t had a response, then let me know.

Thanks funnel, I haven't heard anything yet but I didn't PM Parker or anything. I did email that chalet school address mentioned somewhere on these threads.

I have just read the fill-in, The Bethany Twins at the Chalet School. Really enjoyed it!

I’ve just finished reading Richenda for the first time. I realise I’m reaching the part of the series when the quality seriously starts dropping off but it seems like three quarters of the way through EBD got bored and rushed an ending. There was room in that story for a much more interesting resolution between Ricki and her father.

Plus for some reason the medical bits really grated in this book far more than usual. Joey had a slightly displaced organ? I read the symptoms and the vast amounts of butter and cream and chocolate being consumed and assumed she had gallstones, but then I’m not sure she’d be up and running around a week after gallbladder removal in the 1950s. Plus the shoving oil in the eyes of someone to counter ammonia-like substances made me wince. Thank goodness they had an eye clinic in the doorstep!

And that I need to make sure when I peel potatoes the width of the peelings is as thin as possible.

I invariably feel horribly guilty when peeling potatoes as a result of Frau Mieders.

Me too!

I had so many CS books when young, then sold a lot to a 2nd hand shop in a fit of decluttering about 10 years ago.

Our local church has an annual Book Fayre and I was beside myself to see a good twenty or so CS books there, which I rapidly snapped up. (Have a suspicion some if not all were mine originally, though can't be sure.)

Right … I wasted an entire evening rereading the previous two threads. Haven’t laughed so much for ages.

So I had to wake up at 5 this morning to catch up on the work I should have been doing yesterday.

I hope you’re proud of yourselves! Xmas Angry
