(Can you imagine having Joey as a DIL?!)

Cedar03 · 20/09/2019 08:38

I read my old copies of the Chalet School books to DD recently. I was quite shocked re-reading The Rivals of the Chalet school at the Klu Klux Klan part. It must have gone completely over my head when I was a child. What is interesting is that the children are inspired by some books that Joey has that are set in America. I looked the books up - they are real and are actually anti KKK and anti slavery. I wondered if EBD had actually read the books herself.

Anyway, I tried to explain to DD that the KKK was not something to emulate and we moved on to the more exciting ice skating on dangerous ice part.

Papergirl - the parents in law wouldn't have ever come to visit, they'd have found themselves roped into looking after their 500 grandchildren Smile

burnoutbabe · 20/09/2019 08:41

In head girl, start of, joey grizel and robin are staying with miss maynard in Portsmouth for the holidays and it mentions miss maynard is 22-23 (seems mad if already a qualified teacher and been at chalet school for 2/3 years by then) and that robin is he with mrs maynard. Which makes sense, miss maynard (22/23) wouldn't have had her own big house to stay in during school holidays.
It's only on any sort of detailed re read you spot these details as you know where future plot lines will take you.

Theparkingtroll · 20/09/2019 08:45

Could I please have the Dropbox link too?

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 20/09/2019 08:50

Delurking having caught up on the last two threads. Please may I have the drop box link, too? I promise not to read them all at once and thus require bed rest/special milk or a nice deadly walk.

We also currently have a milk surfeit at work, should any body fancy some. I can't promise any magic tranquilising effect though...

Papergirl1968 · 20/09/2019 08:53

Re Miss Maynard’s age, that fits in with something I recently read in one of the books (can’t even remember which but it was probably Exile) that she’d joined them midway through the first term. It’s just ridiculously young to be a teacher. But then again, Madge was a headteacher and she was only, what, 24? With no apparent teaching experience!

CarrotVan · 20/09/2019 08:59

No teaching experience but Very Strong Views on reading lying down.

I wonder how much it’s a hark back to the days of impoverished gentry governesses (no training) and pupil-teachers (impoverished older teens working as low level teachers whilst finishing their own studies - on the job training in a way)

Have pm’d those who have asked for the Dropbox link. Just need your email address and then the books will be on their way to you!

TomHagenMakesMyBosomTremble · 20/09/2019 12:20

Danke/Merci/Thank you Parker!

FrozenSprats · 20/09/2019 14:30

Could I have the Dropbox link please @Parker231 ? My MIL threw my collection away while I was on holiday Smile

paintedfences · 20/09/2019 15:00

I've actually never read the chalet school books (though I loved the Enid Blyton school ones). They sound great fun - could I please have the Dropbox link too?

AveAtqueVale · 20/09/2019 15:19

Ooh I loved The Chalet school! Don't think I ever read many of the later books though. Would love the dropbox link please!!

applesandoranges221 · 20/09/2019 16:27

I’m very excited to find a thread that shares my obsession..... please may I have the Dropbox link? Lucky enough to have a whole collection but too many are paperbacks...

QuaterMiss · 20/09/2019 16:40

There’s nothing remotely Enid Blyton about the Chalet School, paintedfences! Also, there are over 60 books in the series so be prepared to neglect a fair portion of your normal life.

Howyoualldoworkme · 20/09/2019 16:53

Sorry I'm late, I fell in a packing case and I had to redo my earphones!

cerys · 20/09/2019 17:08

@howyoudoallworkme

I’m late because I fainted on the edge of a precipice but because I am stout and sturdy the peasants couldn’t move me to a hut to give me onion milk. Had to wait for Gaudenz the Giant and he was busy defending the Abbess from a gun toting madman. If only I were small and delicate!

Howyoualldoworkme · 20/09/2019 17:16

cerys
Yes I long to be delicate Smile
I'm reading Joey Goes to the Oberland and Jo is such a cow!
She even has a go at Daisy on her wedding day!

Anyone who has just got the Dropbox, madness lies ahead! I'm rereading from the beginning and I now have no life Grin

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/09/2019 17:17

Cerys I think that will mean two weeks in the San under Matey's watchful eye.

WitheredfromtheLake · 20/09/2019 17:19

Could I also have the Dropbox link please @Parker231 ? Many thanks!

Nat6999 · 20/09/2019 17:22

I'm just rereading Gay at the moment, had a break from CS for a couple of months then the postman kindly dropped a nice delivery through the door & I've got the bug again.

SweetestThing · 20/09/2019 17:26

I'm just waiting for Hobbies Club so I can cut pretty pictures out of magazines and stick them in a scrapbook with pretty fabric covers.

QuaterMiss · 20/09/2019 18:12

Funny to think that nowadays the pupils would have instagrammed those crispy potato balls to death.

Sybil would have made a fortune on Etsy before she reached sixth form. Mary Lou would be the Influencer to end all Influencers. Poor Margot would be somewhere secure - but with a billion dollar book deal all about her mega-stressful childhood.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 20/09/2019 18:32

Howyouall same here Blush

Am up to 'Jo Returns'. Had forgotten just how full on (to my modern sensibilities) they all are to each other. All that 'dry up', and 'shove off' and snapping and storming about.

I always saw Margot growing up to be Carrie Fisher.
