I occasionally have a nose on boarding school websites when I’m bored and I happened to go on Godolphin’s. Their girls appear to wear pinnies over their uniform - or as part of their uniform to be accurate - until they get to sixth form!
It reminded me of the scene - I think it was Christmas in Jo of the Chalet School - where Frieda’s grandmother insists Jo puts a pinafore on Grin

FelicityBeedle · 22/01/2020 00:47

I’m glad that I’m not the only one who loves a daft posh school’s website! I particularly like that they call their school publication ‘The Blue Pinny’. Certainly beats the Chaletian!
Didn’t The Robin wear a pinny for an age as well?

Papergirl1968 · 22/01/2020 11:09

I think she did. I suppose back then washing clothes was a lot harder, never mind drying them in Tyrol winters, so a pinnie made sense to keep clothes clean.

PhilSwagielka · 04/02/2020 10:51

Just ordered my copy of Lintons! It's the one with shitbag Joyce and Thekla getting expelled and the clandestine midnight feast and Joey falling on Miss Wilson's head. It's one of the ones that gets referenced a lot in later books, so I've wanted it for ages.

Chillyourbeans · 04/02/2020 11:05

Eldest DD has always resisted my gentle nudges towards the books but last week she picked up Exile. She cried and loved it and now I sort of feel my work as a parent is complete Grin

Lonelykettleshed · 05/02/2020 21:32

Phil, it's a good read. Definitely one of my favourites.

PhilSwagielka · 12/02/2020 14:46

I'm going to Mastermind auditions in Manchester next week. The CS is my special subject!

LaMarschallin · 12/02/2020 15:18

Phil that's really exciting!
And a pretty big subject, given that some people get away with eg some comedy series that had less than 20 episodes in total or something.

Hope you'll let us know how you got on.

The very best of luck 🤞

AthelstaneTheUnready · 13/02/2020 09:14

Good luck, Phil!

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 03/03/2020 20:07

How did it go, @PhilSwagielka?

I'm just re-reading Does It Again and have found an internal EBDism in Chapter 1! Virginia Adams is initially described as a new girl in Len's dormy, ("Another new gilr called Virginia Adams who looks about fourteen") then in comes Con and they're talking about names being shorterned, and Con pipes up "We've got a new girl in Wallflower called Virginia Adams. She told Matey they called her Virgy at home, though."

PhilSwagielka · 03/03/2020 20:15

It was a lot of fun, can't go into details but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I just went on autopilot when they fired questions at me. I find out next month, I think?

LaMarschallin · 04/03/2020 08:22

I find out next month, I think?

Ooh!
As we will too? Well done Smile

You're sooo much braver than I am.

GoBrookeYourself · 11/03/2020 08:18

@Parker231 I’m so sorry, I know you’ve had lots of people already ask, but please may I have the Dropbox link? Thank you so much in advance!

MenopausalMomcat · 11/03/2020 08:45

@Parker231 Pretty please could
I have the Dropbox link thingy? V V new to all this and am feeling all tingly with anticipation!

LaMarschallin · 10/04/2020 06:49

Just listening to Radio 4 and hearing about the cancellation of the Oberammergau Passion Play.
It used to be one of my ambitions to see it, after reading about it in the Chalet School books.
I can't remember which book Blush but do remember that the Passion Play ended with Jo, white-faced, fainting.
Made a huge impression on me.

Elllicam · 10/04/2020 07:08

Please could I also have the Dropbox link? Xx

TheLongDarkBreakfastTime · 10/04/2020 07:30

All this quarantine stuff is very Chalet School - I can’t remember which book (one of the war ones?) where they turn half the school into an infected zone, and there are quite few waving through the window scenes (obviously Joey has to top that with a cart).

TheNemesisOfLame · 10/04/2020 07:40

I have a shelf full of Chalet School books But I'm definitely missing a few.
@Parker231 may I please have the dropbox link?

Two4tea · 10/04/2020 07:47

@Parker231 please may I have the Dropbox link too. And if someone could post instructions on what to do with it that would be very helpful!

listsandbudgets · 10/04/2020 07:51

Theres a new fill in available. Refuge for the Chalet School. It's set in the missing period in the .middle of Exile. If you can get your hands on it do do. It's been a great distraction from lockdown

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 10/04/2020 07:54

I’d really love the DropBox link too but the last few times I’ve asked nobody has had the details Sad

Chickenpie9 · 11/04/2020 21:50

Has the transcripts one went down ? It was hosted on Hotmail

NWKF · 14/04/2020 22:31

@Parker231 May I also have the dropbox link? I have a handful of e-books from yonks ago, and I dropped a rather exorbitant amount of money on a bunch of hardbacks earlier in the year, but there's still gaps I'm looking to fill

NWKF · 14/04/2020 22:43

@TheLongDarkBreakfastTime I just finished a re-read of Trials at the weekend, which had a scarlet fever outbreak where they turned the school san into a quarantine for all infected persons on the Platz (plus taking over dorms when it spread further); naturally, introduced to the school by a Maynard (and likely spread back to schools in England via the boys)

There was a also a reference to a previous years' flu epidemic essentially shutting the school down (providing the "hilarious" story of Con declaring the Daniel bit the lions, which gets referenced here and I feel, a hundred times over again like the usual anecdotes!)

I did actually write a paper for a medical anthropology class way back about illness/health in children's literature, focusing on the Chalet School.

Hello to all! Just read through the last two threads as quarantine is apparently the time to revisit old fixations... prompted by the Great British Menu's theme being children's literature, which then lead to me wondering what books I'd be inspired by (had I any cooking skill whatsoever...), so, naturally the Chalet School topped my list and it would have to be the dessert course with cake, and coffee and oodles of cream somehow. (Or possibly Anna's famous lemon biscuits...)

Joisanofthedales · 15/04/2020 11:10

@Parker231 I would very much like to have the Dropbox link please. Live on my own and finding self isolation a bit lonely. Would love to dive back into the chalet school sea.
