to think my daughter's being selfish?

I told my daughters (14 & 11) to start getting up earlier to practice for school. I did not expect to be woken up by my older one at 5:45! The shower is the other side of the wall from my bedroom, and she said she had to shower in the morning when she goes back to school. I asked her why it had to be 5:45am, and why she couldn't use the other (much worse, to be fair) shower. She told me she had to dry/straighten her hair and do her makeup which apparently takes an hour and a half? I don't mind her wearing makeup, but I'm being woken up an hour earlier than I need to. I pointed this out to her and her response was "you don't need to sleep for that long (9 hours), and I don't see how it's fair that you get to use the nice shower and I don't". I suppose I can understand wanting to shower in the morning, but AIBU to think she's being selfish?

I'd offer the option of showering at that ungodly hour in the worse shower or using her nice one an hour later or the night before.

Yabu she's learning a vital skill of getting up with enough time to spare and you can't expect her to use the crappy shower at that ungodly time. Lesson learned though OP- if it's not broke don't fix it 🤣

I'd make her shower the night before. My DD also showers early each morning and ties up our only bathroom.

She might say you are being selfish expecting her to wash her hair in a less efficient shower so you can get 9 hours sleep. I couldn’t get too annoyed about this and would just be grateful she is up and getting ready! The reality is that she is unlikely to be this enthusiastic every morning and will no doubt let this thorough morning routine slide in due course.

Why do they have to practice getting ready for school? I don’t practice getting ready for work on days off.

What time did she get up for school before the summer holidays? Is this something you’re going to have to worry about for long - I mean, despite what she has in mind now, is she really going to get up at 5:45 every day for school?

An hour and a half to do her makeup for school is madness.

If she spent an hour and a half doing school work she’d be investing her time a lot more wisely 😬

Seriously though- I think an hour and a half is excessive. But having a shower isn’t the problem.

Sorry OP but I think that’s quite funny. Teenage me would have been very pissed off at being made to “practice” getting up and frankly, waking you up in the process (while technically doing exactly what you asked) is rather an excellently PA way to make the point. Kind of with your daughter on this one. Also wouldn’t have wanted to use the crap shower.

I also can’t quite get past the amount of sleep. 9 hours sleep?! So she only woke you up after you’d had 8 which is absolutely loads of sleep!

In fairness she is just doing what you asked her to do. But just tell her she has to use the other shower. Hour and half to get ready probably isn’t surprising at that age.

@MeredithGrey1 she's always been an early riser, but it's only now she's started showering in the morning because apparently it's more hygienic.

I would be pleased that if she needs an hour for make up she is planning that in.

Shower the night before then just straightening hair in the morning might be solution.

Is this a joke? Making teenagers practice getting up early to be ready for school while you enjoy a remarkable 9 hours of sleep?

Fix the crappy shower and/or let the poor kids sleep in a bit longer.

Get the shower fixed up so she doesn’t wake you up.

I’m a very early riser myself, so none of this would bother me.

Don't shower the night before. You get all sweaty in bed. She's right, it is more hygienic. And eight hours sleep is plenty!

Far better this way than you having a fight every morning to get out the house. And such vital skills for the work place where you have to be on time without mum and dad dragging you out of bed. I'd be so happy if mine did this when they are older - myself and my siblings always sorted ourselves out in the mornings, parents never had to drag us out of bed. I know which way id rather have it. You could wear earplugs.
