Sir James Talbot tackles Mrs. Jack Maynard's Displaced Organ

QuaterMiss · 02/08/2019 18:17

Would I be unreasonable to initiate legal proceedings against this man?

Previous thread here:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3624032-Not-to-have-realised-until-now-that-Joey-Maynard-s-displaced-organ-was-a-prolapse?

With thanks to Jemima232 for rifling through Sir James’ archives to supply the title of this one.

I think I subscribe to the idea that they are Chalet by Numbers and potentially written by Phyllis Matthewman. They just didn’t interest me at all!

Some of the few fill-ins I’ve read have been better, but I do struggle with them a bit as so many of them are poorly edited and I can’t ignore that.

Papergirl1968 · 03/08/2019 12:23

Apologies for being late to this Nobel gathering, but dd ran off last night. Not, alas, up a mountain to be found half conscious by a brawny peasant but to the rather less picturesque destination of Wolverhampton from which she was returned at 6am by two disgruntled police officers.
In true Chalet School style, it appears she intends to sleep the clock round. No such luck that she’ll wake up a reformed character though.
Anyway, there are some Chalet School groups on Facebook, who buy and sell books and have some interesting discussions, including one yesterday on why Margot wasn’t expelled for throwing a book shelf or something at Betty (why indeed?)

Papergirl1968 · 03/08/2019 12:28

Noble, even. Not had much sleep..,

Jemima232 · 03/08/2019 12:34

Why Margot wasn’t expelled for throwing a book shelf or something at Betty (why indeed?)

Because Jo would never have been able to visit the CS again. She would have been too ashamed.

Jemima232 · 03/08/2019 12:35

And Papergirl I think this is both a noble and Nobel gathering.

Wasn't EBD nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature?

QuaterMiss · 03/08/2019 12:38

Oh goodness, Papergirl! You must be completely frazzled. Hope your DD is ok?

It was a bookend ...

OP posts:
Papergirl1968 · 03/08/2019 12:49

She’s ok, thanks. She’s a regular runaway, unfortunately. Adopted, lots of issues.
I feel like throwing a book end at her actually. It might knock some sense into her.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 03/08/2019 12:55

Didn't Ferry have her appendicitis in Challenge for the Chalet School - whilst Miss Wilmot was acting Head and Miss Annersley was off examining Best Practice in other schools - presumably in order to conclude that the Chalet School's methods were the best.

Pascha · 03/08/2019 13:16

I'm almost hesitant to drop in this link, in case the fanfic you come across ruins anything for you all, (some of it is appallingly written tosh), but here, anyway, have fun...

Have you considered boarding school @Papergirl1968? I hear there is a good one in the Swiss mountains that specialises in tearaways.
On a serious note, hope she and you are ok, that must be hard.

Papergirl1968 · 03/08/2019 14:20

I think the discipline would do her the world of good. If only we could time travel - and afford it!

Howyoualldoworkme · 03/08/2019 14:56

Well if any of you have indulged in The Abbey Girls (I'm in it for the dancing on the Sward) the girls are husbanding and wifing each other all over the place.

Incidentally I think I spotted some Abbey books in the Dropbox Smile

MarieVanGoethem · 03/08/2019 15:48

Just caught up on last thread (lost it when my body VERY rudely decided to land me in hospital for almost a month...) & have slightly perturbed my cats (to be clear, am now home) with my giggling.

Just checked the SDL. It seems to be... strangely empty. I’ve not been on the CBB for, er, over a decade now, did something happen, does anyone know? I think it means a couple of things I wrote that I actually liked may now be forever lost [to the mind of the posterity...] as my own copies got Eaten By Tech. (Bits of ridiculousness I don’t care about. And to be fair, was perhaps a BIT unGuidelike to deliberately write something with intention of making people cry. Even if the site Admin someone dared me to.)

Were it not for the bit where the milk would kill me (only a small issue that) anyone trying to helpfully sedate me would regret it (if they managed it, medics are always startled by how much sedation I need... er, for things like having endoscopies/NJ tubes placed, not randomly rendering me unconscious for the craic/their convenience). I’m quite small (well atm I’m scary-small weightwise, but am also not terribly tall) & soft-spoken & polite etc; apparently under sedation I’m both surprisingly strong & VERY fighty. Bit awkward that. And I’m willing to bet the CS would expel pupils for clobbering staff. Even if said staff had been drugging pupils all over the shop.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 03/08/2019 17:14

I'm reading 'The Chalet School in Exile'. It is a Very Exciting Book with lots going on and I'm enjoying it.

Jo to Jack, 'You are a solid lump of comfort'...aw!!

Miss Annersley keeps a box of cigarettes in her office and hands it around during a meeting with the staff and Jo and Dr. James Grin

Jemima232 · 03/08/2019 18:02

Miss Annersley keeps a box of cigarettes in her office and hands it around during a meeting with the staff and Jo and Dr. James

Yes. Very doubtful practice in a school which specialises in pupils who may collapse with TB and other pulmonary problems at the drop of a hat.

And what is the Doc doing smoking fags?

Papergirl1968 · 03/08/2019 18:20

That always shocked me about the cigarettes. I know the dangers weren’t as known then but surely anyone with half a brain cell would have realised it was stupid to inhale smoke into your lungs when you have a history of being “delicate” and having chesty coughs etc.
I don’t think there any mention of Madge or Jack smoking, just Jo and Jem.

Doubleraspberry · 03/08/2019 18:23

On the contrary, menthol cigarettes were marketed as a cure for a cough.

It didn’t shock me. In my early childhood pretty much everyone smoked, and that was after the health issues were known. It was what people did.

BertrandRussell · 03/08/2019 18:29

When I was a child everybody smoked. I think my mum was the only person I knew who didn’t and she was thought very odd and slightly irritating for not.

QuaterMiss · 03/08/2019 18:34

Marie - it’s good to hear you’re home. I had been wondering how you were getting on but didn’t want to pry. I’m sure your cats are delighted to see you returned.

Hope you’ll have a nice long break from sedation of any sort. (And that no stranger arrives to steal your window!)

I was always a bit surprised in (I think)New House when Joey turns up to a bed after a late night that she lights up a cigarette. She's only, what, 19?

BertrandRussell · 03/08/2019 19:12

This talk about smoking makes me feel very old indeed

Catinabeanbag · 03/08/2019 19:15

The Sally Denny Library can’t be logged into any more and nothing new has been posted there for about a year, but you can read all the old stuff on there without logging on (click on the houses/authors/titles tabs depending on how you want to search).
The CBB is still up and running and a lot of achieve fan fic can be accessed through there.
Lime Green Musings is where a lot of the fan fic is now posted, but you’ll need to join to read, and there’s also stuff on An Archive Of Our Own as well.
LOADS of stories about Willy and Ferry being a couple.
(Scuttles off back to library to continue being swotty before Matey catches me working too hard and sends me out for a ramble)

Doubleraspberry · 03/08/2019 19:16

Smoking was glamorous and grown up in the 1930s. No connection was drawn between smoking and any sort of lung disorder. It was the equivalent of 19 year old Jo having a glass of wine now.

Doubleraspberry · 03/08/2019 19:17

Or maybe not, as young people have stopped drinking. Sensible things.

Pascha · 03/08/2019 20:35

I didn't realise the Sally denny library wasn't used any more. I never bothered with a login when I read it some years ago just read the stories. I'll have to look up lime green musings.

Do we think any of the fics are less inappropriate than Forever Amber?
