To wear summer clothes even though I’m fat?

I’m pretty big, not newsworthy big, but around a size 20.

In the past 10/15 years I have sweated my way through summer wearing jeans and leggings and keeping covered up, saving dresses (at the most) for holiday only. Never shorts, never skirts or anything near knee length.

This year, Dh has just persuaded me that I can’t go on living in clothes that quite frankly make me ill in this heat. So I’ve invested in some shorts and dresses and I’ve been wearing them this summer.

I’m well aware people will stare at my fat legs etc but at least I’m a bit cooler. And people probably stare at the crazy woman in jeans anyway!

What’s your view? Would you stare or judge an overweight person in summer clothes? It’s nothing too short, usually on or just below knee length. I’m quite fearful that people stare or think badly of me for being overweight.

AIBU to bear my legs as a size 20?

YANBU. Wear whatever is comfortable. Most people won't give you a second thought anyway.

Newbie7077 · 25/07/2019 14:28

Of course not. Wear whatever makes you comfortable in this heat and try to work through your own mental discomfort so that you truly don't care x

picklejimmy · 25/07/2019 14:29

I've got to this point and thought fuck it. It's too hot to cover up. Wear the shorts!! Life it too short to be uncomfortable

cardibach · 25/07/2019 14:29

I wasn’t aware that weather appropriate fabrics and designs had a size limit. Why on earth did you ever think that? And if you don’t want to wear shorts or dresses (I don’t, at a similar size to you because I don’t find dresses comfortable and shorts aren’t always activity appropriate) why are jeans the only alternative? I wear a lot of loose linen trousers and crops of various designs. Cooler than either jeans or bare legs in the sun actually. I add floaty cotton tops as, again, loose thin clothing is cooler.

olympicsrock · 25/07/2019 14:30

If course it’s ok. Very normal to wear clothes appropriate for the weather.

PenelopeFlintstone · 25/07/2019 14:31

YANBU. You are entitled to wear summer clothes in summer. Keep at it. Smile

Unicornsdosparkle · 25/07/2019 14:31

People will state if you are too fat/thin. If you're wearing too many clothes/not enough. Wear what makes you happy and comfortable.

ScratchyMap · 25/07/2019 14:33

Life is too short for being uncomfortable! And nobody’s looking at your legs anyway. Honestly, it’s liberating. I’m a size 20 and wear miniskirts Grin Don’t care if people think I’m too fat, although I’ve never had any stares or comments, so I’m inclined to believe people just don’t pay that much attention to what others are wearing.

Francium · 25/07/2019 14:33

I'm huge and I'm wearing a strappy top and shorts cause the office is a sauna. People can see my bra but I don't care. Admittedly I don't often do dresses but that's a practicality thing not a size one.
I'd love to find a large cup size strapless bra ( and I do mean actually large cup not just a J cup) or even be brave enough to not wear one at all- often do that at weekends, just so i can be a bit more confortable.

growlingbear · 25/07/2019 14:34

I saw a woman with enormous wobbly legs crossing the road yesterday in a short summer dress. I did notice the size and shape of her legs because they are just like mine and I'd never dare to show mine. But after noticing that, my main thoughts were she looks cool and confident.

Stravapalava · 25/07/2019 14:35

Wear what makes you feel comfortable. Why should you sweat & swelter just because of what other people might think? There'll be plenty bigger than you out wearing summer clothes and why shouldn't you? It's SUMMER!!

To be honest, I notice covered up people more than I notice people who are wearing summer clothes, whatever their size. The only thing I think about the covered up people is "oh my goodness, they must be sweltering, put some shorts on!"

Topseyt · 25/07/2019 14:35

I'm the same size as you. I wear shorts and t-shirts in this sort of weather. I always have. I don't give a shit what anyone else might think, and nor do I judge other people by their size.

ScratchyMap · 25/07/2019 14:36

To add to my post though- beware of chub rub! I get it terribly so I wear little legging shorts under my skirts and they stop my thighs rubbing together. Some people rub deodorant on their thighs and find that works. There’s lots of solutions to it.

Stifledlife · 25/07/2019 14:37

Other people clutching their pearls because you didn't have the humility to understand that the sight of a less than hollywood body would offend them is really not your problem.

Arms and legs do a job and unless you are a card carrying supermodel, you aren't entitled to judge.

Life is too short to not wear spaghetti straps because of arm wobble, or bright colours because someone else has decided you should know your place and blend into the background.

Get out there and rock the summer.. I bet you look fabulous!

FenellaMaxwell · 25/07/2019 14:37

TBH I think I would probably be more inclined to stare at someone wearing jeans in 38 degree heat than anyone wearing a dress!

There’s nothing wrong with getting your legs out, but if you are self conscious how about a maxi dress?

RubbingHimSourly · 25/07/2019 14:38

Wear clothes that you feel comfortable in. And your partner sounds lovely, more people should be like that.

nonsenceagain · 25/07/2019 14:38

Jeez, wear what you want. I find loose linen best in this heat.

PawPawNoodle · 25/07/2019 14:39

YABU for waiting so long to wear summer clothes! You may be fat but that doesn't mean you should suffer, and anyone who would rather watch you sweltering because they think your legs are a bit big is frankly inhuman.

I'm size 20 also so understand the apprehension but honestly, not a single person has given me an off look so far (except myself when I see my sweaty self in the mirror!)

SolitudeAtAltitude · 25/07/2019 14:41

Never heard of the rule that fat people can't wear summer clothes!

What a shame you imposed such a silly rule on yourself, it's summer, wear summer clothes!

BertrandRussell · 25/07/2019 14:41

“Would you stare or judge an overweight person in summer clothes?”

If people stared and judged every overweight person they saw wearing summer clothes they literally wouldn’t have time to look at anything else......

user1494055864 · 25/07/2019 14:42

I'm pretty slim, but I would only notice you, if you were wearing jeans in the sweltering heat, and it would be obvious you were trying to cover up and blend in. Otherwise I wouldn't notice you in summer gear.

lau888 · 25/07/2019 14:42

Wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and confident. I don't like high shorts on anyone, regardless of size or gender - but that's everyone else's choice and not their problem. Whatever you wear, natural fabrics will probably help as they are better at dissipating body heat. Nobody truly thinks they look perfect and nobody judges you harder than you judge yourself. x

dementedpixie · 25/07/2019 14:44

I'm in shorts and a vest top and am around 16 stone. Still sweating mind you!

heidbuttsupper · 25/07/2019 14:45

I've literally just come back in op and everyone is out in summer clothes. I'm a big girl too, size 18 and I'm wearing a short summer dress and boobs out too! Not one single person looked or made a comment

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 25/07/2019 14:45

Wear what you're comfortable in, it's over 30° here today so I wouldn't look twice if someone was wearing shorts or a dress - I'm too busy wiping the sweat that's dripping into my eyes.
