To wear summer clothes even though I’m fat?

I’m pretty big, not newsworthy big, but around a size 20.

In the past 10/15 years I have sweated my way through summer wearing jeans and leggings and keeping covered up, saving dresses (at the most) for holiday only. Never shorts, never skirts or anything near knee length.

This year, Dh has just persuaded me that I can’t go on living in clothes that quite frankly make me ill in this heat. So I’ve invested in some shorts and dresses and I’ve been wearing them this summer.

I’m well aware people will stare at my fat legs etc but at least I’m a bit cooler. And people probably stare at the crazy woman in jeans anyway!

What’s your view? Would you stare or judge an overweight person in summer clothes? It’s nothing too short, usually on or just below knee length. I’m quite fearful that people stare or think badly of me for being overweight.

AIBU to bear my legs as a size 20?

Just what I was going to post DrinkSangria but I'm being charitable and think that 3% have clicked the wrong button.

makingmammaries · 25/07/2019 15:06

You have the right to wear what you want.

That said, since I’m tubbier than I would like to be, I’m going for loose, flowing clothes in thin fabrics.

SoftSheen · 25/07/2019 15:06

Where whatever you feel comfortable in.

I am not overweight (size 12) but prefer to cover up in the heat. I usually wear long linen trousers and loose cotton tops, which keep me cool and more comfortable than I would be in shorts.

SoftSheen · 25/07/2019 15:06

*wear!

WhiteDust · 25/07/2019 15:06

The most unflattering garment for obese women is a pair of leggings. they just outline the obesity.

I'll take that on board when I'm wearing my new tunic T-shirts'& cropped leggings. Bought yesterday.
Actually, That's a lie. Anyone who judges me for what I wear can fuck right off.

Purpleartichoke · 25/07/2019 15:06

Something is very wrong with the world when women think they have to wear weather inappropriate clothing.

oP - make a choice to love yourself enough to dress comfortably.

Ivehadthisnamemostofmylife · 25/07/2019 15:07

I'm off on maternity leave this summer and have just come back from 2 hours at the park having worn jeans and a black vest top. Tomorrow morning I am going shopping for shorts and skirts, I'll be damned if I'm gonna spend the next few weeks melting, might blind people with my milk bottle white legs but I figure if I'm happy to get a boob out to feed, people can cope with seeing my legs 😂

1forAll74 · 25/07/2019 15:08

You should just wear whatever you like, you only think people stare at you ,and they probably don't. I was just sitting on a wall yesterday,at a small shopping precinct, and several larger ladies walked past wearing shorts and loose tops, and they all looked great in their summery clothes and nice sandals. I only looked at them because they looked cool and lovely.

WhiteDust · 25/07/2019 15:08

Andy I see your picture and think cute bikini! You look lovely!

LoafOfSellotape · 25/07/2019 15:08

Wear what you like but I'd be much more likely to wonder why someone was wearing jeans in this heat than if they were wearing season appropriate clothing.

timeforawine · 25/07/2019 15:09

I'm 18-20 at the moment, not happy with it but it's not stopping me wearing summer clothes, shorts that are mid thigh, linen or cotton so cool and a size bigger so they don't cling to my bum, midi dresses good for covering legs but let a bit of breeze around

thedayofthethreeMagnums · 25/07/2019 15:11

I would notice a lot more someone wearing winter clothes in the middle of the summer, what a strange idea.

No offence, but if you are a size 20, you will look a size 20 in winter or summer clothes - at least be comfortable. It's so much easier to cover up in the summer anyway, loose floaty fabric are your friends (even if you are not fat to be honest).

No one has to bare their legs if they don't want to, maxi dresses are just as comfy, if not more.

If you wear inappropriate clothing, people will notice. If you wear temperature-adapted ones, no one will.

Fairylea · 25/07/2019 15:12

I think everyone looks worse when they wear clothes that aren’t appropriate to the weather. Wear what you like and go for it!

jennymanara · 25/07/2019 15:13

Oh my god you are fat!!
You should wear a burkha at very least.

In the real world anyone decent doesn't give a toss what you wear. I am fat. Friends can see I am fat if I wear jeans or I wear a swimming costume. Its not as if it is suddenly a revelation to them.

Also some friends wear tops or clothing I think are not very nice. So what? Up to them.

Hotterthanahotthing · 25/07/2019 15:13

There are people who will judge everything so you may as well be comfortable while they do so.

Heat6Headache3 · 25/07/2019 15:16

Wear what you want always

Batsypatsy · 25/07/2019 15:16

I'm 54 and size 16 and have been living in a denim mini skirt and best tops the last few weeks. Wear what you like. Other people are too preoccupied with their own problems to worry about what you're wearing.

MargotsFlounceyBlouse · 25/07/2019 15:17

Get into a woollen smock immediately! Grin

In all seriousness good for you, of course you should wear summery things. I'm not sure people are bothered about looking at others and judging, we're all usually too busy judging ourselves!

Allergictoironing · 25/07/2019 15:17

I'm a couple of sizes bigger than you (well up top I am, below about the same size), and i'm living in summer dresses from places like Lindy Bop and Lady Vintage/Lady Voluptuous. Get a nice breeze in a skirt that you don't get in leggings or even loose trousers Grin.

That's if I'm in public - today it's just an extra long shirt & knickers, doubt the cats will mind too much!

Heat6Headache3 · 25/07/2019 15:18

The best thing that you can wear is a smile

LadyBumclock · 25/07/2019 15:21

God OP of course YANBU! I see people of all shapes and sizes out wearing summer clothes - why shouldn't they? It's honestly never occurred to me to think "s/he is overweight so they should stay in jeans."

Not that you should wear anything you don't want to either - but if you like something and want to wear it, wear it. Size 20-ish woman just walked down my street in a long floaty dress with strappy low-cut top half, and lovely sandals - she looked glamorous and summery. I honestly wouldn't have ever thought she shouldn't. I'd just think - ooh nice dress.

workhelp1 · 25/07/2019 15:23

YANBU. People who wear shorts so short you can see their bum are though Smile

WhiteDust · 25/07/2019 15:25

But no one is judging @WhiteDust* * genuinely no one gives a toss. Why do some fat people feel like this?

Because j(ust two posts after yours) there are people like Rebecca in this world with their fat fashion does and dont's! GrinGrinGrin

Justsocross · 25/07/2019 15:26

I’m bigger and wear dresses all summer !!!! Go for it if people stare they are probably jealous that you are cool and comfortable x
