To wear summer clothes even though I’m fat?

I’m pretty big, not newsworthy big, but around a size 20.

In the past 10/15 years I have sweated my way through summer wearing jeans and leggings and keeping covered up, saving dresses (at the most) for holiday only. Never shorts, never skirts or anything near knee length.

This year, Dh has just persuaded me that I can’t go on living in clothes that quite frankly make me ill in this heat. So I’ve invested in some shorts and dresses and I’ve been wearing them this summer.

I’m well aware people will stare at my fat legs etc but at least I’m a bit cooler. And people probably stare at the crazy woman in jeans anyway!

What’s your view? Would you stare or judge an overweight person in summer clothes? It’s nothing too short, usually on or just below knee length. I’m quite fearful that people stare or think badly of me for being overweight.

AIBU to bear my legs as a size 20?

Wear what you want. People shouldn't stare.

UserFriendly14 · 25/07/2019 14:45

I like you OP and after years of covering up (especially my bingo wings) I went out yesterday without a cardi/similar over my dress. I was self conscious at first but I soon forgot all about it. Like PP, I'd much sooner notice someone who looked sweltering than another person in summer clothes.

Also, one thing that I always try to remember is that usually people have their own hang ups going on in their head to notice mine! (And sucks to be them if they do notice!)

mbosnz · 25/07/2019 14:45

Please, dress for yourself, for your comfort and wellbeing, and because you want to wear these clothes.

Who gives a rats arse what anyone else thinks? I would judge the judgeymcjudge pants - not you!

Owlypants · 25/07/2019 14:47

I'm a size 18 (16 sometimes, if i find a shop with generous sizing) and this week I've had on my summer dresses, shorts, strappy vests and flip flops. It's hot , wear whatever keeps you cool. Everyone has insecurities about their body. Don't suffer in the heat, free your legs and enjoy the breeze (if there is one)

HaileySherman · 25/07/2019 14:47

I am the same way. In 100° i wear a hoodie and jeans or other pants. If i am honest though, i look at people a lot larger than me in shorts and tanks and i never judge or think they should cover up or anything. My point being that i think we're much more focused on and critical of ourselves than others. Most probably would not give a second thought or glance. Once, i wore a loose tank top over a fitted one out in public while on vacation in another state, while only my husband and 2 young children would know me. It was so freeing. I've never done it again, but if i could wrestle up the courage i would. You should too.

NoSauce · 25/07/2019 14:49

Bloody hell OP of course you can wear what you want. It’s too hot for jeans Shock I’m about a good stone overweight atm and bought some strappy long floaty dresses that look nice ( to me )

Go and get some summer stuff quick!

Kezza8 · 25/07/2019 14:49

Wear exactly what you want! And well done to your lovely DH for persuading you x

WhiteDust · 25/07/2019 14:51

I am doing the same thing here for the first time too!!! I am tired of loose shirts /tops coving my arms. Trousers making me hot.
I'm wearing light jersey tunics -short sleeves with (wait for it) cropped leggings. I am past caring.
Let people judge.

BuffaloCauliflower · 25/07/2019 14:52

I would find it stranger if you were all covered up in this heat. I get distressed when I see people wearing hoodies when it’s really hot, makes me feel hotter! Wear whatever you like!

Sandybval · 25/07/2019 14:53

H&M slub dresses are so comfortable and feel nice and cool too!

Tallgreenbottle · 25/07/2019 14:54

Yabu op to wear jeans and leggings in summer ffs. Wear 3/4 leggings and a long line strappy top or wear a bikini. Whatever you like! Just stop giving a shit thinking other people care what you wear, because they dont even notice. I promise.

JudgeRindersMinder · 25/07/2019 14:55

I’m a fair bit bigger than you and aim on holiday just now, wearing a bikini.
Don’t be all hot and bothered in jeans etc, wear what you like and be comfortable in the heat

OvertiredandConfused · 25/07/2019 14:55

I’m the same size as you. When it is hot, I tend to live in wide leg linen trousers – both full length and three-quarter length – with loosefitting vest tops or T-shirts (not strappy cami tops). I also wear maxi and midi dresses (with some fantastic, cool, chub rub shorts underneath). Whilst I don’t like how I look, I do know I am dressed appropriately and as comfortable as possible. I think people who try to wear too many clothes in very hot weather are far more obvious.

Good luck wearing whatever you feel comfortable wearing

lavenderbluedilly · 25/07/2019 14:55

Wear what you like. I’m fat too and actually recently realised I still look better in fitted clothes rather than loose baggy ones. For years I wore maxi dresses which tended to make me look like I was wearing a tent. M&S currently have nice stretchy vest tops with wide straps.

ForInstance · 25/07/2019 14:56

Voted YANBU without reading beyond the title because there’s nothing that could make it a YABU.

Tallgreenbottle · 25/07/2019 14:56

But no one is judging @WhiteDust Confused genuinely no one gives a toss. Why do some fat people feel like this? I'm a size 20 and I've never given a flying fuck. It's weird to 'cover up' in hot weather. If anything we should be the ones in skimpier stuff because we are warmer 😂

herculepoirot2 · 25/07/2019 14:57

You are what you are. If anyone doesn’t like it they don’t have to look.

itbemay · 25/07/2019 14:57

wear what makes you happy my lovely and do not worry about what anyone else thinks. I am pretty sure your body will thank you for keeping it cool and airy!

2Rebecca · 25/07/2019 14:57

The most unflattering garment for obese women is a pair of leggings. they just outline the obesity. Long floaty clothes are much more flattering, maybe a bit tighter up top if you have a good bust as the total tent dresses don't look great on anyone and a lot of fat women are quite shapely.

MoominKitty · 25/07/2019 14:58

I'm a 5 ft 4 inch chunk at size 20 to 22 and I have tree trunks for legs, retain water etc. I have a nice floaty dress I'll be wearing the weekend and other people be dammed! I do cover my dinner lady arms with a sheer thin cardie though but that's only because I feel more comfortable to do so. Fat people exist and as long as your nips and bits are away who cares, don't bake yourself for other people hun xx

DrinkSangriaInThePark · 25/07/2019 14:59

Who are the 3% assholes who voted that she's unreasonable to wear summer clothes, that's what I'd like to know.

They obviously weren't brave enough to back their vote up with a comment 😂

redcarbluecar · 25/07/2019 15:00

Nobody is staring, or if they are, that’s their problem. Wear what you like / feel comfortable in. I’m a similar size to you, maybe a bit bigger, and live in shorts during the summer. I’ve only just persuaded myself to wear sleeveless tops though. Funny the things you feel self conscious about.

Oilskinproblems · 25/07/2019 15:00

oh I have friends who wear leggings with dresses in the summer because they’re weight conscious and I always feel so bad for them! Op wear what you are comfortable in - judgy people will always find something to complain about regardless of weight so don’t give it a second thought. Life’s too short and this weather is far too hot!

SVRT19674 · 25/07/2019 15:02

What would you be supposed to wear? a woolly coat and anorak?
Summer clothes for summer.

Andysbestadventure · 25/07/2019 15:02

Name change because outing but... ZERO FUCKS GIVEN today. I'm a size 20 OP. Wear whatever the hell you like! It's blood boiling!
