To wear summer clothes even though I’m fat?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 25/07/2019 14:26

I’m pretty big, not newsworthy big, but around a size 20.

In the past 10/15 years I have sweated my way through summer wearing jeans and leggings and keeping covered up, saving dresses (at the most) for holiday only. Never shorts, never skirts or anything near knee length.

This year, Dh has just persuaded me that I can’t go on living in clothes that quite frankly make me ill in this heat. So I’ve invested in some shorts and dresses and I’ve been wearing them this summer.

I’m well aware people will stare at my fat legs etc but at least I’m a bit cooler. And people probably stare at the crazy woman in jeans anyway!

What’s your view? Would you stare or judge an overweight person in summer clothes? It’s nothing too short, usually on or just below knee length. I’m quite fearful that people stare or think badly of me for being overweight.

AIBU to bear my legs as a size 20?

How about a nice Kaftan dress. Best invention!

ControversialFerret · 25/07/2019 15:54

YANBU - wear what you want.

A 'bikini ready' body can be described thus: Take one bikini, put it on your body, et voila!

People judge regardless of whether you are young, old, fat, tin, ordinary, stunning blah blah blah. So you may as well be comfortable.

The most unflattering garment for obese women is a pair of leggings. they just outline the obesity.
I couldn't give two fucks whether someone thinks my leggings are unflattering to my size 18 arse and legs. What I wear, on the basis that it's ordinary and everyday clothing, is nobody's business but my own and I have zero obligation - or intention - of dressing for someone else's standards of what they consider to be 'flattering'. Hmm

Weightquery · 25/07/2019 15:55

I’m the other end of the scale.
Scrawny as hell. Feel so unattractive but I wear long flowing skirts and that seems to tick the summer box AND not make me feel like I’m being stared at

LauraLooDerby · 25/07/2019 15:55

@OP - do whatever - the only 'look' I've given today was to a very slim lady who was wearing full length skinny indigo jeans, and I wanted to check I wasn't going mad. Oh no, sorry - the other 'look' has been across the road to someone's office where there is a man with no top on, in an office with other people. Strange.

I need some shorts that don't ride up when I walk, and make me do that funny little leg flick every now and again to make them shuffle back down my inner thigh. If you know, you know.

Anyone got any amazing suggestions? I'm a size 16-18 and 20 weeks pregnant too, so it's really fun at the moment.

My saviours are my Noppies anti chub rub shorts (maternity only I think, sorry). I love them more than ice cream.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 25/07/2019 15:56

I'm carrying some extra weight and I'm living in those loose harem-style pants you can get at H&M. They're cool and avoid the chub rub, but also provide coverage so I don't have to get my legs out. They're also pretty practical in terms of avoiding sunburn and insect bites! I also like wide-leg linen trousers and chinos, but not when it's this warm.

SunshineCake · 25/07/2019 15:56

Who the fuck said you were unreasonable?

Wear what the hell you like as long as boobs and bum are covered. Whatever your size, including size 8. No one wants to see your arse.

WatcherintheRye · 25/07/2019 15:59

The only thing I think about the covered up people is "oh my goodness, they must be sweltering, put some shorts on!"

^ Absolutely. I once was that person, not particularly weight-related at the time, but so self-consciousl as a teenager that I chose to cover up in summer in dark, baggy clothing so as not to be seen. Little did I know! Many decades older and several sizes larger, and I now dress for comfort in things I like. There are advantages to getting older!

You will look just fine op. Nothing makes you less likely to be stared at and judged than doing what everyone else is doing. Smile

Paddington68 · 25/07/2019 16:00

Sister
This heat is no place for jeans.
Get a nice, floaty summer dress on and if anyone says anything tell them to do one.

SunshineCake · 25/07/2019 16:02

@Andysbestadventure - no way are you a size 20. You look lovely because I can sense your confidence. Not noticing your claimed size!

formerbabe · 25/07/2019 16:03

Wear what you want...of course.

Branleuse · 25/07/2019 16:03

youre not going to look smaller or bigger because youre showing more or less skin. Its important that you wear weather appropriate clothes. You dont want to overheat. Absolutely no sense in overdressing if you dont have to

wichitalinemanswoman · 25/07/2019 16:04

Look around you, there are people you'll look at who you think aren't dressed to your taste or who may not look right or comfortable to you. You look and then you forget about it. And why should you care? I've stopped giving any fucks and although I hate my legs with a passion I'm putting my comfort above what others (whose opinions I really don't give a shit about) may or may not think of me

Doidontimmm · 25/07/2019 16:04

I’m a 10 but won’t wear dresses/shorts as my legs are too white! I’m in jeans today in this heatwave! I say if you feel happy then wear whatever is comfortable!

notacooldad · 25/07/2019 16:09

Good grief, don't suffer.
I really think you are unnecessary overthinking things although I can understand why. I do the same.
Most people are wrapped in their own thoughts to give you a second though and those that arent should be!!

Tabitha005 · 25/07/2019 16:10

I'm plus size, too, and I'm embracing linen as though it were a religion. I've also bought a pair of those massive, baggy-crutched yoga pants in every colour imaginable and I LOVE them. I pull the cuffs up over my knees and wear them with oversized linen vests (found a great supplier on eBay who sells the vests in sustainable bamboo-derived linen) with a bra top underneath. Cool. As. Fuck. In both respects, ha ha.

Noonemournsthewicked · 25/07/2019 16:11

A colleague of mine was wearing black skinny jeans and black long sleeved top back in June when it was just a bit warm.
I felt really sorry for her. She looked so uncomfortable. I'm overweight so i get it but looser fabrics are the way forward.
Plus chub rub shorts.

HeadintheiClouds · 25/07/2019 16:11

They wouldn’t sell shorts, bikinis, etc in size 20 if there weren’t a hell of a lot of people buying (and presumably wearing them).

kmammamalto · 25/07/2019 16:17

I was waiting for a blood test today in the absolute sweat box little hospital and all size and shape and age and sex of people coming too and fro. And honestly the only person I looked at in horror was the girl who came in wearing jeans, trainers and a wolley jumper!!!
You do you! Just don't wear jeans! 😂

flowerpower18 · 25/07/2019 16:21

You are not being unreasonable...The problem with society these days is everyone will always comment on your looks whether your thin, fat, pretty, big nose, small nose etc etc - these people are just ignorant.

Even the most prettiest and slimmest of people (especially on social media) still get ridiculed for something or other!

I think you wear exactly what you want and what makes you feel comfortable and sod what everyone else thinks!

Happy Summer Clothes Wearing :-)

MonstranceClock · 25/07/2019 16:24

This year is the first year since I was a child that I've gone out with my arms and legs uncovered. I'm a size 10! I just have really bad keratosis polaris on my arms and my legs are just shit looking.

Ticklemeelmo · 25/07/2019 16:25

Wear what you like. It's far too hot not to wear summer clothes. Most people don't bat an eyelid at what anyone else they see in public is wearing

fraxion · 25/07/2019 16:27

Oops pressed the wrong button sorry! Wear what you feel comfortable in, I'm sure no-one is batting an eyelid. I certainly wouldn't.

speakout · 25/07/2019 16:31

Wear what makes you feel comfortable, honestly no one cares.

fedup21 · 25/07/2019 16:33

I have to say, I think shorts look pretty awful on most people over a size 10, but that’s just my own very judgemental view. I include myself in that-shorts look awful on me.

But...there are plenty of alternatives. I wear a lot of dresses and skirts. I go for a thin material-it’s very forgiving and flattering.

FenellaVelour · 25/07/2019 16:33

I used to self harm as a (slim) teenager and never wore anything but long sleeves and opaque tights even in the heat.
Then I had a car accident when I was about 19 and had a realisation that life is too fucking short to care about what people think or how strangers judge you.
I’m fat now and I wear what I want.
