Jet2 Couple. Greedy or within their rights?

I personally call greedy. They helped Jet2 staff restrain a woman who was trying to open the doors on a flight which was amazingly brave. Apparently this woman was acting crazed. But since they have heard that Jet2 are seeking 85k from the woman for the cost of diverting the flight etc, they are demanding a share in this. Apparently being given free drinks was an insult and they want money.

I think they are just being bloody greedy. What do you think?

They're chancing their mitt. There's no way Jet2 will recover anything like that amount from her so it's never going to happen.

I think they're being unrealistic.

Any monies obtained from the "crazed woman" who needed to be restrained would be for the cost of diverting the plane, not for the hassle of restraining her.

In any case I cannot see that Jet2 will receive any compensation.

Jet2 are suing for the costs they incurred due to the woman’s behaviour.

What costs did the couple incur due to her behaviour? If they missed a connecting flight or something they might stand a chance of having the replacement flights paid for but that’s about it.

I also can't see how Jet2 will get their money unless the woman is a rare 25 year old with assets of more than that amount.

But I can see how it could cost £85k to divert a plane when fuel, staff wages, landing charges, food and drink for inconvenienced passengers are costed up.

While a couple of free drinks might seem a little of an insult, I don't see how they could expect more than that, because there will be no money, and that sort of thing is just what decent human beings do, without expecting a reward for it. At an absolute stretch, I suppose that Jet2 could give them a couple of free tickets on one of their flights.

I’d like to know how a woman who works in Costa is going to pay £85k in the first place - can’t sue someone for what they don’t have! £10 a week forever?

This attitude sickens me.

The alternative to them intervening was at best cabin crew being injured, at worst a major incident happening on their flight.

They should not be seeking compensation of any kind.

I hope the courts laugh at them.

I read this in the Daily Mail. I think they're being cheeky. It used to be the case that people did a good deed out of a sense of duty. Nowadays trying to make a quick buck out of any situation seems to be commonplace unfortunately.

It was in their own self interest as passengers not to let her open the door in flight.

What I always wonder when things like this happen is what good a couple of Tornado aircraft "escorting" a plane (when an incident is over) can possibly do? What are they there for? It seems a bit futile, really.

I’ve just read the mail online article she caused a lot of disruption with her stupid antics and it’s not the first time she’s been in trouble 2 weeks before she got on that flight she was given a 28 month driving ban she’s been given £450 fine for assault. And nowhere in the article that I’ve just read does it say anything about anyone wanting some of the 85k or complaining about only getting free drinks.

Imo they should be thankful they all made it home safely.

They are being greedy and stupid. Their claim will be unsuccessful.
All airline carriers claim the cost of diversion and disruption from the passenger who caused the aircraft to do so.
The airline will receive their claim, whether it is by stripping someone of their assets or by receiving a fixed repayable amount on a payment plan as set by the court.
To summarise, the passenger will be in debt forever and this will affect her life on a daily basis, from living on beans and toast to being denied a mortgage.
She will also be banned from flying for life.
She isn't a one off, anyone who has endangered an aircraft receives the same treatment.

Agreed, they are being greedy. It's sad that people think helping others in a one-off crisis situation entitles them to some form of payment.

Jet 2 are within their right to seek compensation for their financial losses.

The couple are also entitled to seek compensation, if they incurred a financial loss, and if they are willing to pay solicitors etc, but they should also claim from the woman for their losses not via Jet 2.

But also think its wrong to be billing the woman 85k. With two drink drive convictions behind her she clearly has a problem. To be so drunk she gets abusive, the airline must take responsibility for serving her so much alcohol surely?

I think she should be fined but the level of cost they are seeking is ridiculous and is purely designed to send a message, not just to punish her (which, isn’t their job)

What the fuck do they want PAYING for? They're not the ones incurring massive fines for not completing their schedule, or for requiring the scrambling of 2 RAF fighters, or all the compensation/rescheduling that the airline would be involved in!

What legal basis do they have for doing that?

The escorting planes are in case of hijack, they will shoot it down if it suddenly starts flying towards the centre of London for example.
