AIBU to wonder how a 30g portion is a serving size?

When this is the whole 225g pack?
It's halloumi btw, surely 30g is a slice, who says just one slice?
Am I just greedy?

Who says one portion is 30g?

Sexnotgender · 16/07/2019 18:59

No idea but I bloody love halloumi. I made a delicious halloumi fattoush the other day.

RhiWrites · 16/07/2019 18:59

It’s the smallest amount they can get away with claiming is a serving. I would eat half a hallumi deep fried in batter but I tend to get the low fat kind. Serve with chips, horseradish and peas.

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/07/2019 19:00

The pack said that.

You eat it with other foods though, not just for dinner on it's own.

Him well I would never eat all that like that. Probably have a couple of the pieces with a salad or something else.

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/07/2019 19:08

I'm not eating it just like that!
I still think 30g is a really small portion.

adaline · 16/07/2019 19:09

30g is roughly one piece I would imagine, so it's the easiest thing to quantify as a portion.

WindsweptEgret · 16/07/2019 19:11

It's the amount of fat and salt, it's a food you eat in small amounts with other things.

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/07/2019 19:15

This is the meal, I ate half the halloumi and roughly a third of the salad.

I had that exact pack a few says ago and was quite upset at the 30g portion when I was logging it. 100g is more realistic.

supersop60 · 16/07/2019 19:21

Same with cereal. 30g is nothing.

Hecateh · 16/07/2019 19:23

I would say 30g as a starter and 3 to 4 times that as a main BUT check calories and fat - the larger portion maybe probably just a 'treat' meal

MyDcAreMarvel · 16/07/2019 19:26

Half the halloumi is an awful lot. Two slices at the most would be normal.

Terramirabilis · 16/07/2019 19:27

Food manufacturers do this on purpose for high calorie foods imo. They claim a tiny amount is a portion so the nutritional information on the packet looks better because it's per portion.

LolaSmiles · 16/07/2019 19:28

I think on the whole many of us (me included) have lost track of what a portion size is as we are used to larger portions and not measuring food out.

However, some packs of high fat/high sugar food seem to go on the very small side probably due to % of daily fat/sugar. For example, when I had a tube of Smarties I think the portion size was 7 Smarties! Clearly that is ludicrous. I'm just going to have the tube of Smarties as a one off and won't be eating it daily.

The 500ml bottle of coke zero next to me is apparently 2 servings but again reality is that as a sensible adult I'm more than capable of moderating my fizzy pop intake over the week.

grafittiartist · 16/07/2019 19:28

Yes- agree with cereal too- tiny amount :(

cloudyinjune · 16/07/2019 19:32

Half the halloumi is an awful lot. Two slices at the most would be normal.
Nonsense.
How often is the halloumi eaten? How much salt is eaten in the week? How active is the person?

Normal for whom?

dogbaby · 16/07/2019 19:33

I'd be pretty shocked at someone eating half that amount to be fair. Halloumi is really fatty, I agree one or two slices are a portion on a plate assuming it's served with, say, cous cous and salad. Or I'd use a slice to make kebabs with peppers and I'd say one slice would do two kebabs.

Cereal servings are daft because people often have cereal on its own but don't think that is the case with cheese, or it shouldn't be!

Your AIBU is why there are so many "overweight" people in the UK.

CountFosco · 16/07/2019 19:42

30g is a normal serving size for a high calorie snack food. You get used to it.

Comefromaway · 16/07/2019 19:43

I don’t eat it but if I was serving it I’d serve one slice with around a third of that salad plus some grains.

Juells · 16/07/2019 19:57

Didn't get past I would eat half a hallumi deep fried in batter Grin Is that a thing????
