AIBU to wonder how a 30g portion is a serving size?

When this is the whole 225g pack?
It's halloumi btw, surely 30g is a slice, who says just one slice?
Am I just greedy?

Re: cereal (or other) portions, well there's no accounting for stupid. If you assume (and remember that assume makes an ass out of u and me) that the amount you put in the bowl without measuring is a certain size, and hence amount of calories, then more fool you.

Inexpensive digital scales are widely available and weighing portions takes seconds, so there's little excuse if the portion size matters to you.

formerbabe · 17/07/2019 07:23

I think one slice of halloumi making two kebabs might be the new mumsnet never ending roast chicken

I thought the same but didn't want to say anything in case I was accused of being a fat greedy cow having lost sight of normal portion sizes.

transformandriseup · 17/07/2019 07:32

I can’t believe someone said they would only eat a third of OPs salad.

Comefromaway · 17/07/2019 07:45

Your bowls are really large. I DO weigh ds’s cereal out (he has asd/sensory food issues so I want to make sure he is portioning a decent amount rather than just a small handful). 30g of weetabix protein crunch seems a good amount (I try to sneak 40g in though)

I basically came on this thread as I LOVE the competitive mumsnet undereating.

Oddbutnotodd · 17/07/2019 08:08

With all these food threads we don’t know what else anyone is eating or drinking during the rest of the day. The person eating a slice of halloumi with salad might be a big snacker. The kebabs could be quite large with halloumi just as an added ingredient.

In my family we would probably share a packet between 3 of us but occasionally only 2. We don’t have starters at home. That would be the main protein in the meal.

All these threads show that there is a range of amounts of food that people eat.

Whatafustercluck · 17/07/2019 08:17

I don't know anyone who would stop at one slice of halloumi and I don't know any overweight people. I wouldn't eat the whole plate but for a good evening meal I'd eat the salad and half the halloumi. God I love cheese.

I do agree though that in general we've lost sight of what is a 'normal' portion size.

I know, right? I've been on a weight loss programme for about 18m now, and am very, VERY well acquainted with portion sizes.

100g of halloumi with salad would absolutely fit in with my diet!

"I basically came on this thread as I LOVE the competitive mumsnet undereating"

This ^^

isabellerossignol · 17/07/2019 09:17

My MIL would love Mumsnet competitive under eating threads. She frequently has a tomato for dinner, half a banana for breakfast and half a slice of toast for lunch. And then wonders why she constantly feels faint and light headed, why her bones are brittle, her skin is dry, she is constantly exhausted etc. Not a week goes by that she doesn't have to visit the doctor to try to explain this medical mystery. She's probably costing the NHS a hell of a lot more than people who occasionally eat half a packet of halloumi...

vampirethriller · 17/07/2019 09:26

lastqueenofscotland me too.

hsegfiugseskufh · 17/07/2019 09:47

I think anyone who's calorie counted, and weighed every bit of food they eat will actually know that you actually can eat quite a bit if you pick the right foods. 3 slices of halloumi and a bit of salad wouldn't be any more than say 500 cals. if you're doing 1400 cals (I think that's what the NHS recommend as a starting point for women) you've still 900 left for the rest of the day!

formerbabe · 17/07/2019 09:50

According to a packet of rice, a portion of that should be 75grams. When I cook for my oh, I weigh out 120grams for him. He'd be highly unimpressed with less, and he's not overweight.

HiJenny35 · 17/07/2019 09:53

I think you've missed the point. The pack doesn't state that you should only eat one portion, it's saying one (roughly one slice) is x amount of calories and fat, it also always has to give in 100g if you prefer that, therefore you can easily estimate if you are eating 3 slices how much you have. It's to make the ability to keep an eye on fat and salt levels etc easier.

Zaphodsotherhead · 17/07/2019 09:58

But the one 'portion' stuff is always the one that's in big print on the front of the packet though.

'ONLY 24 CALORIES PER PORTION'.

Then you see the size of what they count as 'a portion' and realise that nobody in their right mind is only going to eat that. I got caught out by some sugar free mints the other day. 29 CALORIES PER MINT (they are tiny). But the whole packet (which a normal person could inhale and barely notice...) 240 calories.

frogsoup · 17/07/2019 09:59

I think the problem we have with obesity is the exact opposite of what some are claiming on here - it's the whole idea of thinking that 30g of halloumi is a portion. Obsessing over calories and portions and fat food stops people doing what they should do, which is eating to appetite. It is no coincidence that OP is thin and would easily eat half a pack of halloumi. I would as well and am also thin. But i would only eat it if I was hungry. The 'oo I'm so naughty I ate 6 biscuits' mentality is alien to me.

Comefromaway · 17/07/2019 10:05

Good luck eating a whole pack of sugar free mints zaphods! They often have a laxative effect!

Aus84 · 17/07/2019 10:16

I'd have cut one slice of 30g put it aside and eaten the rest...

pigglypug · 17/07/2019 10:19

I love that some PPs would be "pretty shocked" at you eating half the halloumi. I just have this vision of them sitting there aghast as you chow down on piece after piece...

formerbabe · 17/07/2019 10:21

I lived with a girl once in a shared house. I knew she wasn't my type of person when she bought a single pack of rolos, ate them all except for four...wrapped them back up and put them back in the cupboard Confused

thenewaveragebear1983 · 17/07/2019 10:29

An ounce of cheese is pretty much a standard portion isn't it? I would probably have more if it was my only protein/fat in my meal, so maybe 60g with a green salad like yours.

Burger King now do a halloumi Burger. Just saying.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 17/07/2019 10:34

What is it with mumsnet and the competition of who can eat the least? 🙄

Me and dh often have half a block of halloumi each with salad and cous cous for a quick dinner, when he gets home late as I feed the toddler dc earlier and me and him like to eat together. Neither of us are obese yet 🤷🏻‍♀️

Most portion sizes are packs are suggested so low because they want the item to seem healthier than it actually is, cereal being a good example of this.

yousmokedthelastoneanhourago · 17/07/2019 10:44

Pack portion size is just a way that different foods can be compared within the food industry . You can have more than one portion if you want.

k1233 · 17/07/2019 11:16

I honestly think serving sizes listed on packages should be the same as the serving sizes per the food pyramid etc A serve of veges is 75g, fruit 150g etc. That is the only way people can make sure they are eating the right portion sizes and see what the actual calories of what they are consuming. Allowing manufacturers to self select serving sizes is totally flawed.

AnAC12UCOinanOCG · 17/07/2019 11:24

I can't believe the people saying one or two slices is a portion. No wonder this island is sinking under the weight of fatties stuffing their mouths with salty cheese.

2g is all anyone needs. We have lost sight of portion sizes and should be ashamed.
