To think if you cycle into an elderly lady

You should at least stop and check she’s ok?

Gobsmacked at the total lack of concern shown by the cyclist. He took a chunk out her arm and just carried on!

Doesn’t surprise me one bit. Sadly.

KurriKurri · 15/07/2019 18:15

Someone did this to my Mother when she was in her late seventies. She was walking the dog in the evening, man on a racing bike knocked her down and cycled off, her glasses were broken and she was knocked to the ground na dbadly bruised. Lucky the dog went home and my BIL went out to look for her - it was starting to get dark and without her glasses she can't see far.

I imagine the majority of cyclists are decent people, but as with every mode of transport you get arseholes. People round here (adult men mostly not kids) ride bikes fast on the pavement - I am partially deaf and don't always realise they are close behind me and have to do a last minute jump out the way.

@KurriKurri that's awful! Your poor mother

Sexnotgender · 15/07/2019 18:20

That’s awful KurriKurri.

Lady I was with is in her 80s I think, lovely and fit but definitely a little more fragile being older.

She has a big gash on her arm, thankfully she wasn’t knocked to the ground.

jennymanara · 15/07/2019 18:28

Bloody hell that is awful. He could have killed her.

Parky04 · 15/07/2019 18:30

Agree that they should have stopped but more cyclists will no longer stop after one got sued when a pedestrian on a phone stepped off the pavement and was hit by the cyclist who was on the road!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 15/07/2019 18:38

I don't think her age comes into, tbh.
He should have stopped regardless of her age wether she was 18 or 80

CommeDesPoissons · 15/07/2019 18:38

You mean the cyclist riding an illegal fixie? The pedestrian was killed, and the rider wasn't sued, he was prosecuted (and jailed). So I guess that would deter some people from acting with basic human decency.

LakieLady · 15/07/2019 18:43

@CommeDesPoissons possibly the pp meant this case

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/cyclist-knock-over-woman-phone-compensation-court-london-a8969731.html

A good example of why cyclists should have 3rd party insurance imo.

chocolatebrazilnut · 15/07/2019 18:43

I think Parky is talking about a more recent case. See metro.co.uk/2019/06/18/cyclist-ordered-pay-compensation-woman-stepped-front-looking-phone-9996411/

I agree cyclist was totally out of order though. Hope your friend is OK.

That’s a different case. The poster was referring to this:

www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jun/21/cyclist-crashed-into-woman-mobile-phone-pay-compensation-london

However, it sounds like the cyclist was absolutely to blame in the case the OP describes. Cyclists should be made to take out insurance, given the damage they can cause.

LakieLady · 15/07/2019 18:45

That's disgusting, if true.

And cyclists wonder why people think they should be identifiable ...

BogglesGoggles · 15/07/2019 18:48

Road cycling needs to be licenced and insured

SoupDragon · 15/07/2019 18:58

And cyclists wonder why people think they should be identifiable ...

Indeed.

bumblingbovine49 · 15/07/2019 19:00

I .not terribly surprised. A friend of my son was knocked down by a cyclist while walking to school in year 7 a few years ago . The cyclist didn't stop, leaving an 11 year old girl with a broken arm .

CommeDesPoissons · 15/07/2019 19:01

Apologies, I hadn't seen that one.

This is from the Guardian link posted upthread

"Hazeldean’s lawyers, Levi Solicitors, called for an urgent change in the law to protect cyclists from expensive payouts."

They can damn well protect themselves by carrying insurance!

Sexnotgender · 15/07/2019 19:31

Well yes I agree they should have stopped regardless but it takes a special kind of arsehole to hit a woman in her 80s and not stop.

GCAcademic · 15/07/2019 19:42

I've just looked up third party liability insurance for cyclists as I want DH to take this out. It costs £3.88 a month with Cycling UK, and covers you for £10m. There is really no excuse to not take this out, especially when you consider how much these blokes spend on their bikes and ridiculously-priced gear (DH is no longer allowed to comment on what I spend on clothes, now that I know what a bloody cycle jersey costs).

Sexnotgender · 15/07/2019 19:43

I should also say knob head cyclist was on the pavement Angry

Awful that this happened. How horrible. I hope she recovers well.

ColaFreezePop · 15/07/2019 20:08

People who cycle don't walk and drive as well Hmm

InfiniteCurve · 15/07/2019 20:30

Well of course you should stop, but unfortunately the vast majority of cyclists are utterly self absorbed cunts who truly believe they can do no wrong.

Yeah,right Hmm
