To really want a full glass dining table?

I have bought some crystal Kartell ghost chairs and would love a clear glass table to match? Does anyone have one who can advise whether this is a good idea?

I have a beautiful kristalia table. The top is frosted glass.

I still love the table design but sadly despite my love & attention it is pretty scratched.

I polish it with glass cleaner infrequently (but don't have kids).

You need to use table mats & ban anyone from dumping things on it. Especially keys.

The clear mat looks great.

A friend bought one.

My God, the noise as the children clattered their cups and cutlery on it. I inherited a glass TV unit and CD shelves. They are shit - always look dirty, despite looking after my stuff, they've both got scratched and, no matter how entertaining it is to see DTwatCat1 smack his head on the underside trying to annoy DTwatCat2 sitting above him, that doesn't change the fact that they need far more effort than I'm prepared to put in to keep them looking clean.

A long wooden table would look lovely in that corner - cosy and sturdy.

Not a good idea. They are as naff as fuck, heavy as lead to shift around and a real pain if they get damaged.

DixieLandReject · 09/11/2019 19:53

Update: I decide against it! I ended up with a a pale oak table. Photo to follow

I think that’s the right decision, OP. I used to have a glass table and the noise every time you put anything down on it really annoyed me. It just doesn’t make for relaxing meals.

There are some amazing large glass top tables where the mechanism used for expansion is designed to look really cool and is fully visible. That would be about the only cool option to consider for a glass top table but you’d need the amazing house to go with it.
Glass tops can scratch easily (one of my friends scratched it with her diamond ring by complete accident and she is clean obsessed so looked after the table with the greatest of care).
Throw kids in the mix, tipsy guests, not the best combination.
Clear table and clear chairs are overkill.
Stark’s chair is not made of glass, the way light will reflect against the two materials will not make them belong to each other, yet it won’t be different enough for the chairs or the table to stand out in their own right.
You need to showcase the chairs. A smoky, darker background might help.
A wooden table won’t necessarily work but if it’s a clean style and darkish it might look nice.
Alternatively, a modern option are tables with a ceramic top which come in any combination of colours, and shapes for legs and they can have the extendable option.

OK @Womenwotlunch if you say so Grin Cheers for the update OP although I can't say I was on the edge of my seat...

OtraCosaMariposa · 09/11/2019 20:52

No.

They're hideous and blingy. Buying a new table to match a chair which will date very quickly is silly. That style of chair always looks like cheap plastic from a distance too. If you have kids or pets, it will never, ever look clean and you'll go through gallons of glass cleaner. And even then it will still have marks.

Not a good idea.

WildRosie · 09/11/2019 21:06

You need to have a cat if you have a glass table. Photograph cat from under the table whilst it is lying on top if it (bound to happen sooner or later). You now have a picture of a hovercat.

Singlenotsingle · 09/11/2019 21:10

When my ds2 was only 3, we were visiting my dsis and he climbed onto the glass table and it cracked right across. Luckily ds2 wasn't hurt, but I dress to think of what could have happened. I'd never have a glass table. Too dangerous.

Singlenotsingle · 09/11/2019 21:10

dread

DixieLandReject · 09/11/2019 22:09

Sorry for the mess Grin

That looks way better than a glass one.

I don't like the idea of seeing mine and every else's knees at the table.

Honeyroar · 09/11/2019 22:14

We'd some friends that have a glass table. I absolutely hate it! I hate looking at my fat legs when I'm eating! Although you can see if your napkin has fallen off.

DixieLandReject · 09/11/2019 22:21

jason I’m sure you weren’t on the edge of your seat however, as there was a recent comment, I decided to update Wink

Of course. If we can't have resolution of these simple things how can we hope for coats and ironing boards?

I do still think it was a rather odd thread to bump.. What are you searching for to find such a thread? Or had they been thinking of you all this time, wondering what you had decided?

DixieLandReject · 10/11/2019 09:12

otra I very much doubt the chair will date quickly Hmm and even if it did, I don’t follow fashion, I like what I like Smile

I'm thinking of getting a quartz table made, from the same stuff as the kitchen worktops I will have. Should be very hard wearing and no need for mats.

I was looking at Dekton topped tables but there are issues with chipping even though they are very robust in other ways.

Does anyone have a quartz table?

DixieLandReject · 10/11/2019 09:45

I’ve got quartz worktops, be careful though because they do stain with tea and coffee etc if not wiped straight away. Mine grey/ white though

Good choice of table, OP.

Always nice to hear how a dilemma got resolved.

Oilyoilyoilgob · 10/11/2019 11:15

Lovely kitchen and choice of table!
@DixieLandReject can I please ask where the table is from? Thank you 😊

DixieLandReject · 10/11/2019 11:32

Thanks guys. It’s from Neptune, lots of choice on their website Smile
