To really want a full glass dining table?

I have bought some crystal Kartell ghost chairs and would love a clear glass table to match? Does anyone have one who can advise whether this is a good idea?

Yes the wall is wonky ha ha it sort of goes wide towards the back, I have no idea why, it’s an old house. The sticking out things are pipes for the radiator.

Ballache to do a jigsaw on.

PickAChew · 15/07/2019 23:06

The noise really is a thing, too. So much clatter.

DH smashed it to smithereens trying to get it out of the house when we'd had enough of it. Proper shards, rather than crumbled glass.

madcatladyforever · 15/07/2019 23:11

No, they are only good if you plan to photograph your cats from underneath Grin

We have white tempered glass - in reality it has a bluey tinge. Advantage is that we can’t see our feet while eating dinner 😬 but scratched really show up in direct sunlight (but only then). I like it, doesn’t have bulky presence of our wooden table but isn’t such a nightmare for finger prints etc

shiveringtimber · 15/07/2019 23:20

Glass surfaces are a nightmare. Incessant cleaning because even laying your hand on it leaves a mark.

Howzaboutye · 15/07/2019 23:23

Love the cat pic!

Artesia · 15/07/2019 23:28

Do you have young children who eat weetabix? If so, definitely don’t get a glass table.

#bitter experience of far too much time spent chisling dried weetabix off the underside of a glass table#

RightOnTheEdge · 15/07/2019 23:35

Your kitchen is beautiful!
I think a wooden table would suit it better.

CalamBalam · 15/07/2019 23:40

Glass coffee tables can be nice and I love the classic Eileen Gray side table, but I've never seen a glass dining table that I didn't think looked tacky.

DixieLandReject · 15/07/2019 23:40

Thanks, I’m definitely leaning towards wood now!

Noooooooooooooooooooo!! I inherited my DH's TV stand which is glass and can't afford to replace yet. You can watch the dust resettling even as you stand there with the bloody pledge.

It's evil.

TheDarkPassenger · 16/07/2019 00:27

We’ve got a massive black glass one nd we have 3 children and a dog the ya been known to climb on it. We use it for crafts, drawing, dinner, pumpkin carving, the gathering place when friends come over etc and I personally find it a million times easier to clean than wood!

TheDarkPassenger · 16/07/2019 00:28

Oh pp don’t use pledge on glass! It just seems to Crete a static that attracts the dust back down. I use a micro fibre and general purpose cleaner and it’s never been dusty, granted it does get cleaned like twice a day due to the nature of its purpose!

PantTwizzler · 16/07/2019 00:36

We used to have one. Plain glass slab on dark oak trestles. PITA to clean. We got rid once we had DC.

steppemum · 16/07/2019 09:24

my SIL has one, and actually it really works.
I was sceptical as my uncle had one and I lived with him for a few months and the table was abugger to keep clean.

But SIL's one is not flat clear glass. The surface is, but the underside is textured. This keeps the illusion of space, but the whole cleaning/shows every mark is reduced.

They then had 2 small children, so to get through the kids' years they got a mat that goes on it. It is sort of clear plastic, thick and soft (and cost about 100 euros) you don't see it, but it sits on top of the table, exactly the same size as it, and protects it from everything.

Their table is lovely, it works, and just gets wiped down after food.

It has almost converted me.

LaurieMarlow · 16/07/2019 09:28

We have one. I love it. It’s not nearly as hard to clean as billed (and I hate cleaning).

SwearyWhitehouse · 16/07/2019 09:29

Please don't get one. I had one in a rental many moons ago and hated the bloody thing. It didn't scratch but within seconds of me cleaning the bastard thing it had a fine, visible layer of dust over it again. I bought a tablecloth for it within weeks of moving in.

A refectory table would be lovely though

This is ours

MedalMedalMedal · 16/07/2019 09:41

I like mine.

It’s not in use every day though, as we use the dining table in the kitchen more than the glass one in the dining room. So yes, for daily use they can be harder to keep smear free.

Ds was laughing at the underside view of our glass coffee table the other day as the cat was sitting on it 🤣

User8888888 · 16/07/2019 09:41

I couldn’t wait to get rid of mine and no-one wanted it so we had to freecycle. They are mega heavy and pain to clean.

DixieLandReject · 16/07/2019 09:55

Wow Steppe that clear mat sounds brilliant!

I’ve had a glass table for 10 years with three crazy toddlers round every weekend. No scratches even though it gets a lot of use. Still looks brand new. If you’re the type who takes care of their things you’ll be fine.

LakieLady · 16/07/2019 10:04

@madcatladyforever Fantastic pic - he looks really comical, like a fur hat, but with feet.

DixieLandReject · 16/07/2019 10:25

I can be a bit heavy handed as in dumping the shopping on the table but I can change Smile there’s always the worktops to use
