To really want a full glass dining table?

I have bought some crystal Kartell ghost chairs and would love a clear glass table to match? Does anyone have one who can advise whether this is a good idea?

yes, the clear mat is good. It also take the noise away (they are noisy) and it isn't as cold to the touch.
I think it is this stuff. They had theirs cut to size, included the rounded corners. I think theirs may be thicker. It did cost them about 70 euros though

table mat

SunkissedCherry · 16/07/2019 10:29

My glass table has a tablecloth on it.

steppemum · 16/07/2019 10:30

the cost was probably because their table it big, it comfortably seats 10, and they got the thickest one.

HeadintheiClouds · 16/07/2019 10:33

Not being funny, but if you’re using a tablecloth it hardly matters what’s underneath?? If op likes the look of glass, she’ll hardly want to immediately cover it up

Teddybear45 · 16/07/2019 10:38

Exactly no point having a glass table if you’re going to cover it!

DixieLandReject · 16/07/2019 10:40

The clear mat would be ok for everyday use though, I think.

No point getting a glass table then.

Missteebeee · 16/07/2019 11:07

I bought One for my new house post divorce

I hate the bloody thing

It’s so scratched already and shows every time fingerprint and speck of dust

The children are t careful with it at all hence the marks all over it

theemmadilemma · 16/07/2019 11:15

I have one and it has scratched, but it was reasonably cheap.

I still love it though. I had a big wooden one, and it just ate the space and made it so dark. Now with the glass table you see through the room more and it looks so much more spacious.

For the space you have, I would go glass.

steppemum · 16/07/2019 12:08

IT'S NOT A TABLECLOTH!

It is aclear mat, which is invisible on the glass table, but protects it for everyday use and yet keeps the look of the glass, becuase it is invisible. It also stops the noise and cold of a glass table.
Granted it isn't for everyone, but as a day to day option, it really works, so you can get the best of both worlds

Womenwotlunch · 09/11/2019 14:21

I have a glass table in my dining Tommy. However, we barely use the dining room, so it is in fantastic condition.
I don’t find it hard to clean at all.
I really don’t like wood tables

WitsEnding · 09/11/2019 14:31

I had one when the children were small and loved it. Hardwearing and easy to clean.

It can be a little bit disconcerting to see your thighs through the table - napkins were always out if we had visitors

JasonPollack · 09/11/2019 15:56

What an odd zombish to bump.

flirtygirl · 09/11/2019 16:04

I had glass with wooden legs but bolted underneath so it looked like it floated, it's 16 years old and still looks great, couldn't get it back from abroad and now divorced. He got that house and furniture. It was oval too so no problem with children. Easy to clean and I never worried about hot drinks like on a wooden table.

I have a rectangle frosted glass top table now with oak legs and love it, probably will never buy or need another table. I will change the top if it gets too scratched in a few years time. Glass cut to size is very affordable.

Not sure why some many in these threads for ruined. I would also never buy anything with black glass again, I have a side table and a TV unit with black glass and they show dust every second. I am keeping them but replacing the glass to either coloured or frosted.

flirtygirl · 09/11/2019 16:10

Your kitchen is beautiful op, a zinc top or marble top, as well as white glass table would look fab. Wood would be too heavy in your space.

Purpletigers · 09/11/2019 16:19

A wooden round table would look fab in your kitchen .

CMOTDibbler · 09/11/2019 16:42

Ours has a wooden frame (its a two leaf stacked table, so doubles in size) and is frosted glass with clear squares. Its 14 years old now, and despite a total lack of care is still looking the same and isn't too much of a pain to keep clean

81Byerley · 09/11/2019 16:46

Only buy one if you are never going to sit at it or allow other people to sit at it, and if you are never going to allow anyone to touch it EVER! I used to clean a house that had a glass table. I'd clean it thoroughly, move away, look at it, and see finger marks. I'd clean them off, look at it from a different angle.... more finger marks. And you'd be amazed at how many finger marks you get underneath the table edge as well. On top of that static electricity meant it was always dusty as well. Awful thing!

PegasusReturns · 09/11/2019 16:54

I had the same set up about 16 years ago. The chairs cost me almost a months salary and we're the most expensive thing I'd ever bought and god how I came to loathe them.

The glass table had to be cleaned extensively every day it scratched easily and constantly had finger prints on the underside

As for the chairs they scratch, the way the legs are made makes the feet teeny tiny filth traps, every finger print and smudge showed up.

EntropyRising · 09/11/2019 17:00

I wouldn't do it, wooden is much better. Also your arms would get cold.

bornonasunday · 09/11/2019 17:05

From experience, I would say - don’t. Not unless you want to spend pointless time polishing/dusting it every day!! It shows every bit of dust, hair, fingerprints etc.
I gave up after a while & got a table cloth for it, then eventually replaced it with a wood one. Best thing I ever did🙄

BarbedBloom · 09/11/2019 17:50

My mum has one and hates it as she is constantly cleaning it. Her grandkids are a nightmare for leaving fingerprints all over it too. She is getting rid of it now

motheroftwoboys · 09/11/2019 18:21

Got two - one in the dining room and one in the kitchen. Love them as they give the illusion of more space. they do scratch but it doesn't seem to matter. Easy to clean. Just a squirt of kitchen spray or window cleaner.

Womenwotlunch · 09/11/2019 18:37

@JasonPollack
What is odd, is you posting to say how odd it is

Inebriati · 09/11/2019 18:46

We were at a dinner party with friends who had a glass table. One of the husbands made an apparently innocuous comment but we all saw his wife nudge him under the table, so that was awkward Grin
