My plates smell of egg

AliceRR · 28/06/2019 11:10

My mum gets this (maybe she taught it to me!) but DH doesn’t

If we use a jug or plate for egg then it smells of egg so I usually use a bit of bleach or zofloro or something to get rid of the smell.

DH made me some toast in bed and the plates smells of egg so much so I’m having to get too close to the plate. He doesn’t really get it ofc.

Does anyone else know what I’m talking about?

I also think reheated chicken can get a funny taste and tastes “chickeny” 😬

Will be sniffing my plates after my next poached eggs as I am now very intrigued

YourDaughter · 28/06/2019 16:54

I get it (my DH and PIL think I’m mad Grin). I spray my ‘eggy’ plates with kitchen cleaner spray then pop them in the dishwasher. Comes out clean most of the time.

YourDaughter · 28/06/2019 16:56

I find washing plates that have had egg products on without the spray makes every item in the dishwasher smell eggy. That includes products like mayonnaise, I drive DH mad with my pedants GrinGrin

TeeniefaeTroon · 28/06/2019 16:58

If I'm eating eggs and I drink out of a glass at the same time, once I'm finished my eggs I have to get a fresh glass as the other one smells and tastes of eggs 🤢

How many times can I say eggs in one sentence 😂

AliceRR · 28/06/2019 17:07

You put Zoflora on your plates?

Sometimes, only if they’re eggy

Fuck me. Are you bonkers?

🤷🏻‍♀️

Me too op! I hate cooking eggs because of this.

Worse is when you can smell it at a restaurant and then it makes you feel gross.

Even worse is when you go to a holiday home where the people before you have had a fry up on their last day and everything in the cupboards smells of eggs. Other peoples' eggs. So you have to wash every item before you can bring yourself to use them....

You're not supposed to use Zoflora on anything that food directly touches.

QueenOfTheAndals · 28/06/2019 18:21

Try washing it in cold water with some detergent. For some reason if I use hot water on plates with egg or fish then the plate reeks. Use cold water and no problem!

I wash it off properly 😬

Washing up liquid doesn’t usually work but will try with cold water!

I have a friend who swears by hand washing in cold water with detergent - she says too hot water sets the food and cracks the glaze on her expensive plates. She won't use a dishwasher because she says everything smells afterwards and it's too harsh on her crockery.

teenmum18 · 28/06/2019 18:45

This is why I put thin bleach in the water when I wash up. Can't stand the smell off eggy glasses plates ect. 🤮

Confused You should do this anyway!

You don't know whether the last people licked every plate on their way out!

Redpriestandmozart · 28/06/2019 19:01

I'm vegan and can detect the disgusting smell of eggs off plates and cutlery instantly, always have, it gives me the boke. I was out for afternoon tea on Tuesday and immediately got the waft of egg from my plate as I sat down, I ate off a clean napkin. So OP I feel your pain, and I don't think you're mad :)

Knackeredmommy · 28/06/2019 19:01

Yes! Citrus and vinegar cut through it. I use lemon washing up liquids for this reason.

Knackeredmommy · 28/06/2019 19:02

...(and that's why I wash chicken/meat with lemons or vinegar)

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 28/06/2019 19:53

YANBU. We’ve started hand washing anything that’s had egg on it, otherwise everything else in the dishwasher load also stinks of egg. I can’t bear that eggy smell, especially on glasses!

MustardScreams · 28/06/2019 19:57

Shock at the people using bleach to wash up with.

Can you smell sugar in tea op? Apparently that’s a thing as well.

MustardScreams · 28/06/2019 19:58

And no would should ever wash chicken!! Wtf people, do all of you have a death wish? Or a be very poorly wish? Christ.

MadisonAvenue · 28/06/2019 20:03

I know exactly what you mean! It’s horrible.
My husband can’t smell it, I think he thinks I’m imagining it.

Far2go46 · 28/06/2019 20:43

Yeah, I hate it when chicken tastes "chickens" Confused

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 28/06/2019 20:49

Hang on, some people can’t smell sugar in tea??

Thisizit · 28/06/2019 20:51

My plates often smell like wet dog.

I sniff my plate before serving everytime.

I can't eat if my plate is smelly.

No one else can ever smell it Blush

Thisizit · 28/06/2019 20:53

Omg. I think it IS when egg is cooked!!

Shock
EncroachingLoaf · 28/06/2019 21:01

I haven't the tiniest clue what you are all talking about but I feel like I need to go and sniff all my plates and the dishwasher.
