My plates smell of egg

AliceRR · 28/06/2019 11:10

My mum gets this (maybe she taught it to me!) but DH doesn’t

If we use a jug or plate for egg then it smells of egg so I usually use a bit of bleach or zofloro or something to get rid of the smell.

DH made me some toast in bed and the plates smells of egg so much so I’m having to get too close to the plate. He doesn’t really get it ofc.

Does anyone else know what I’m talking about?

I also think reheated chicken can get a funny taste and tastes “chickeny” 😬

At last I have found my people, that egg smell makes me gag but neither my dh or three adult sons can smell it. mind you I can also smell sugar in tea. I have though never washed crockery in zoflora, have tried using Stardrops to rewash eggy stuff, it seems to help a bit.,

MayFayner · 28/06/2019 21:12

This is a lightbulb thread! I know that smell but I vaguely thought “oh the dishwasher hasn’t washed properly again, I wonder why”. But it’s bloody egg!

The smell was in my wineglass the other night and I had washed it with a bowl that had had scrambled eggs in. It’s all making sense Shock

MissClareRemembers · 28/06/2019 21:26

Yep, definitely get this. Nothing that has been in contact with eggs can go in the dishwasher otherwise everything stinks. It’s really grim.

AliceRR · 28/06/2019 21:32

I think I can smell sugar in tea 😬 but didn’t know it was a “a thing”

Some good suggestions to get rid of the smell

I don’t wash meat but I’m pretty sure the chickeny smell comes from reheating chicken after it’s already been cooked. It’s bad enough that I’ll avoid chicken altogether in a restaurant if I can’t be sure it won’t have that taste.

Ha! @Thisizit

@MayFayner I love that you just realised it’s egg! This thread might change your life!

I can smell what you speak of anywhere it touches.

I find the smell of it on the metal of the sink after rinsing egg off is the most intolerable.

Makes me heave. If I smell it on a plate or cutlery, food has to be thrown away because I would throw up as I can taste it too.

I think it's protein that causes it, happens with meat too for me but egg and chicken is the worst. Is made so much worse with the addition of warm water. Seems to me also that it's being held under a microscopic layer of grease, making it hard to wash off.

DH thinks I'm freaking mental because he can't smell it.

I personally think women are the ones most likely to experience this stinky phenomenon.

Lemon/citrus washing up liquid is essential to get rid of it because you have to cut through the grease before it can get to the long in my experience. Rinse with cold water, smear plate etc. with neat washing up liquid (I use cheap Magnum from Aldi, works well), leave to sit for a bit, then rinse with cold water. Then wash up as normal in hot water with more lemon washing up liquid. Works for me.

I can smell blood, sugar in tea and for some weird reason milk smells slightly of beef to me, especially when I'm about to start my period.

MerryBerryCheesecake · 28/06/2019 23:23

Not "get to the long"

"get to the pong"

Bloody auto correct.

AliceRR · 28/06/2019 23:28

Can’t everyone smell blood?

Beef often smells weird to me when I first put it in the pan, a bit like it’s off

I have an acute sense of smell. I can do sugar in tea/ coffee, blood, veg that might turn etc.

But egg smell is the worst. Even thinking of it makes me gag.

UrbanMage · 29/06/2019 09:12

@AliceRR I can't chop up meat for the same reason. Even freshly bought chicken stinks to me and fish is ridiculous.

I can also smell weather changes. Storms smell acidic. Snow smells metallic.

I meant to say

😯

That’s a new one!

My dishwasher is about 5 years old, and about a year ago I started to notice a horrid smell coming from it and tainting the dishes too! I could smell it on drinking glasses - yuk! It's much the same smell as others have noticed: eggy, wet dog, river smell... First of all I thought the smell was down to eggy plates, so I stopped putting anything with egg into the dishwasher, but still the awful smell continued and began getting stronger! I Googled the problem and found out that the smell is due to bacteria from food particles, etc - urgh! The cure was supposed to be to throughly clean the dishwasher, the filter and all parts, including door seals. I thoroughly cleaned my machine, but still the smell remained. I tried everything: super hot washes on empty, different in-wash cleaners, added salt, dishwasher aid, but all to no avail. In the end in sheer and utter desperation I put bleach into the dispenser - and hey presto, no more smell! I know you shouldn't put bleach into the machine, but it was that or a new machine! My dishwasher remained smell free for about 2-3 weeks, then slowly the dreadful smell returned. Being reluctant to use too much bleach, I started using a slightly diluted solution of Milton sterilising fluid (used for sterling babies bottles). I use it every two weeks, pouring it into the dispenser and running it empty. I guess you could use sterilising tablets for ease instead. My dishwasher now remains lovely and fresh! Yes, like bleach, I know that long term the diluted Milton may cause parts and seals to deteriorate, but as I said earlier, it's either Milton or a new machine. For now I will continue to risk the Milton!

Sugarformyhoney · 04/08/2019 20:58

Yes!! My oh thinks I’m bonkers but there is s definite tint to the plates and cups. I HATE eggs too 🤢🤢
I won’t allow egg plates or pans in the dishwasher and they must be washed in bleach and then with fairy 😂

Sugarformyhoney · 04/08/2019 21:04

Yes to smelling like wet dog too!!

IcedPurple · 04/08/2019 21:09

YANBU.

I love eggs but I hate the smell of eggs on anything. That eggy smell which lingers on plates and cutlery is not pleasant.

QueenEnid · 04/08/2019 21:11

Oh god yes to the chicken! I can't microwave or reheat any meat unless it's reheated in gravy because it just tastes weird!

Haven't noticed it about the egg tho!

onedayallthiswillbeyours · 04/08/2019 21:24

Yes!! I cannot eat off an "eggy" plate although no one else in the family seems to notice. I always pre-wash any cutlery, crockery, pans etc that have been in contact with egg before putting them in the dishwasher and then they are fine. DP doesn't pre-wash the egg contact items and I can smell it straight away! Bleurghh!

stormageddmum · 04/08/2019 21:28

De-lurking as never usually post but YAdeffoNBU. My husband doesn't believe me either but eggy plates and cutlery make me gag. Some pan fried chicken also smells pissy. Long standing veggie so maybe just sensitive to proteiny iron things?

onedayallthiswillbeyours · 04/08/2019 21:29

Mugs and glasses when they have been through the dishwasher with an "eggy" item Envy

stormageddmum · 04/08/2019 21:34

Yes to eggy plates = wet dog!

CottonSock · 04/08/2019 21:37

@JPark mine did this and eventually blew up. Water collecting inside somewhere and getting stagnant. I was grateful I could ditch the shite dishwasher, a Bosch only a few years old.

AdamantEve · 04/08/2019 21:44

YANBU. The worst is when I can smell it on my cereal bowl, puts me right off my breakfast 🤢

IcedPurple · 04/08/2019 21:49

And worse again.... glasses you've drunk out of during an eggy meal. Yuck!

BTW is it true that cold water is better than hot water for getting rid of the traces of protein-based foods? I've heard that hot water effectively cooks the protein, hence the smell. Not sure if it's true however.
