My plates smell of egg

AliceRR · 28/06/2019 11:10

My mum gets this (maybe she taught it to me!) but DH doesn’t

If we use a jug or plate for egg then it smells of egg so I usually use a bit of bleach or zofloro or something to get rid of the smell.

DH made me some toast in bed and the plates smells of egg so much so I’m having to get too close to the plate. He doesn’t really get it ofc.

Does anyone else know what I’m talking about?

I also think reheated chicken can get a funny taste and tastes “chickeny” 😬

Are you microwaving the egg? And what are your plates made of?

AliceRR · 28/06/2019 11:51

“Normal” plates and no

LimitIsUp · 28/06/2019 11:55

Nope. Haven't experienced this and I have a finely tuned sense of smell

AliceRR · 28/06/2019 11:56

You might notice it now if you smell your plates when you’ve had egg

There’s a definite smell but it’s like a “fresh air” kind of smell 🙈

Yes I get this, can't stand the smell thought it was just me. I also don't like chicken that tastes too much like chicken either.

prelovedsweetie · 28/06/2019 11:59

I’d never connected the smell with eggs until my ex brother-in-law pointed it out to me. I can’t ‘unsmell’ it now but rarely do anything about it as it eventually wears off.

AliceRR · 28/06/2019 12:00

Yes! @mickeyinthehouse

Oh my! I was going to start a thread about this exact thing! It's the protein in the egg I think. If the dishwasher has had egg pans in I can smell it and it makes me gag. I have to hand wash everything cos it permeates the whole load. I stood in the kitchen smelling the cutlery and moaning to my daughter who thought I was nuts!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 28/06/2019 12:06

Am I the only person who read the title as Cockney rhyming slang?

i.e. "My FEET smell of egg" Grin

Chillichutney1 · 28/06/2019 12:07

My mil was like this, she used to put lemons in her dishwasher to get rid of the egg smell. A squirt of Vinegar in the dishwasher will also get rid of the smell

I couldn’t smell it before but now someone has pointed it out to me I can. Smells kind of algae like. Doesn’t bother me though.

CarrieBlu · 28/06/2019 12:09

YES! I thought it was just me. Horrible smell, I won’t eat off plates that smell eggy, they go back in the wash with a squirt of bleach.

I was just about to reply to your OP,
YANBU and my mum always used to say the plates smell “fresh” if you don’t wash them properly after eggs, she used to use zoroflora also.
I can’t stand the smell and use bicarbonate of soda mixed with washing up liquid before putting them in the dishwasher.
DH thinks we are both a bit mad😊

LimeKiwi · 28/06/2019 12:11

What's the AIBU tho, I'm confused I obviously need more caffeine

YABU bleaching or Zoflo''ing your plates

YANBU if you can smell egg, then you can smell egg and your plates need washing up better (with washing up liquid!)

I also think reheated chicken tastes “chickeny”

Well duh Grin It ain't gonna taste of custard, is it lol (sorry) Grin
So I'm not voting as there's too many questions.
YABU
and YANBU for reasons explained above and there isn't a multiple choice button yet Grin

ecumenicalpatter · 28/06/2019 12:19

Definitely a thing, OP, although seemingly other people cannot smell it at all. To me it's a metallic, proteiny (almost wet dog!) smell. Usually follows dishes coming into contact with raw eggs/meat I've found. Also can't eat from a plate or use cutlery that has this smell, makes me gag.

ravepixie · 28/06/2019 12:20

OMG OP i know what you are talking about. My DH looked at me like I was a weirdo when I first told him. He can now smell it too. We use antibacterial disinfectant spray and lemon juice to help get rid off the smell.

AliceRR · 28/06/2019 12:32

Lemon and vinegar - might try those

We don’t have a dishwasher currently. Just moved into new house and haven’t decided whether we’ll get one but that’s another issue

I do find the smell can spread to everything else in the sink

My family have said it smells “fresh” too! Are we related @Ghanagirl ? 😂

The AIBU is am I being reasonable to think plates smell after egg has been on them

The chickeny thing is slightly different but I get a similar reaction from my husband

Top tip: rub the used teabag from your tea on your washed eggy plate then rinse. Works a treat.

Interesting. I will definitely try that

I can't smell it but my sister and niece can. If soaking, soak in cold water, and yes lemon juice or white vinegar wiped over it.

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 28/06/2019 12:47

Yes!!! I hate when a plate or bowl that’s had egg in/on goes in the dishwasher and then makes everything else that was in there with it come out smelling odd.

But...and I’ve never known anyone else to have this...I also can’t eat eggs with a runny yolk outside. Egg + fresh air smells/tastes HORRIBLE to me. And I’ve noticed the same thing with pate too.

sharpstick · 28/06/2019 12:47

Yes, I get you! I always find the dishwasher smells different after washing anything with egg on. I smelt it in a glass I was drinking from the other day 🤮

Also yes with the chickeny chicken!

Eliza9919 · 28/06/2019 13:07

Yes I get this, can't stand the smell thought it was just me. I also don't like chicken that tastes too much like chicken either.

This makes no sense when said but I don't like 'beefy' or 'steaky' steak.

AliceRR · 28/06/2019 15:02

I have found my people 😂

OP posts:
Tallgreenbottle · 28/06/2019 16:02

You put Zoflora on your plates?

Fuck me. Are you bonkers?

CatToddlerUprising · 28/06/2019 16:09

I thought I was the only one! My partner can’t smell it but to me it stinks out the kitchen. Hate cooking eggs
