Why are people so rude & weird?

I'm currently looking after a friend's house in a town on the South coast.

I've been here for several weeks and I can't believe how rude and deranged strangers are here. Normally I'm up north or overseas.

In Tesco, I got called a 'stupid cow' for dropping my keys on the floor after checkout, by a customer, a woman she was with laughed at what she said and they both sneered at me. I'm not sure if I was supposed to have heard. I didn't put anyone else out by dropping my keys, then they walked really close behind me whispering loudly. It was bizarre. I wondered if they were on drugs,. I said nothing because my instincts told me these women were asking for a fight somehow.

Today I was outside Aldi and a guy in a car made kissing noises at me as I got out. Then when I got back in the car after my shop, carrying flowers and he made kissing noises again and said "ah she bought flowers" in a silly, take the piss voice, stuck his hand out the window towards me, not sure why? and his friend in the car with him burst out laughing and then drove off. I just gave them a strange look.

A couple of other incidents like this involving men, total strangers, who appear to be taking the piss for no reason.

A man sort of blocked me in to a parking space, I had a hell of a time getting out of the space, I asked him to move and he wouldn't, with a sneering look on his face and then when I rolled my window down to give him a piece of my mind, he said with a lascivious look on his face "doesn't it feel so good to get in and out of tiny little spaces?"

I went out with a friend to a bar and a man came up behind me and grabbed my head for no reason. I shouted at him to get off me and he did. He kept approaching me after that trying to apologise, but it was like he was taking the piss, it wasn't genuine. In the end we left the bar because of it.

Anyone else get strangers doing this? How do you react?

This isn't a particularly rough place.

That's very strange, there's always going to be the occasional weirdo but it sounds you've had a real run of it Confused
I'm curious where you are? Is it a town or bigger area?

Maryqueenofscots83 · 26/06/2019 21:11

I have to add this doesn't really happen to me in other places, I am happy to be leaving soon and heading back up north!!

It's Bournemouth.

I did wonder if there is a big problem with drugs here but wasn't sure

NauseousMum · 26/06/2019 21:13

Wow they are rude and the guy that grabbed you was a disgrace.

origamiunicorn · 26/06/2019 21:13

Where is this? Sounds like Royston Vasey. I live in Dorset and it's definitely not like that here!

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 26/06/2019 21:13

and heading back up north!!

Where this sort of thing never happens Grin

origamiunicorn · 26/06/2019 21:16

Oh, Bournemouth?! Never had that in Bournemouth in all my life! Very odd!

Maryqueenofscots83 · 26/06/2019 21:16

I actually like both north and south and haven't had this happen before. Just glad to be leaving soon after the weirdos I've come across in this town.

Sometimes I wish I was a huge tall guy who is a bit scary looking, instead of a 5ft 1" tall woman

I lived in NY for two years and saw nothing bad and had nothing bad.
A friend visits for a weekend and: witnessed a stabbing; got her bag nicked; her taxi got in a fender bender...
Just bad luck.

BogglesGoggles · 26/06/2019 21:20

Well that’s because you weren’t in Waitrose you silly! But on a more serious note that’s very very odd. Maybe it’s the humidity or something?

Maryqueenofscots83 · 26/06/2019 21:22

Lol I do go to Waitrose sometimes and I have never been insulted or harrassed in a Waitrose car park/supermarket.

OP posts:
Maryqueenofscots83 · 26/06/2019 21:23

Yes just bad luck I suppose.

It feels like I've got an invisible flashing sign above my head that only weirdos can see saying "fuck with me please" lol.

Are you exceptionally good looking or something?

BreakHerOffAKitKat · 26/06/2019 21:39

Are you talking about the Aldi and Tesco on Holdenhurst Rd by any chance? If so, please be assured that is not a true representation of the rest of the people of Bournemouth!

Maryqueenofscots83 · 26/06/2019 21:44

Yes, the Aldi on Holdenhurst Road. and the Tesco was Tesco extra...the one not far from the hospital.

I'm not unattractive, I scrub up all right. without wanting to sound immodest

Far2go46 · 26/06/2019 21:51

Boscome?

ProperVexed · 26/06/2019 21:53

Bournemouth has a lot of drug addicts and a very large number of rehab houses for drug / alcohol problems. Hence a large number of people who appear odd. Holdenhurst Rd and Boscombe are probably the worst bits.
There are many lovely areas though.....honest! (I just knew you were staying in Bournemouth from your opening description)

Maryqueenofscots83 · 26/06/2019 21:54

Yes the Aldi was in Boscombe. The other ones in Bournemouth & the bar was in Christchurch

OP posts:
Maryqueenofscots83 · 26/06/2019 21:56

@ProperVexed that makes sense. I did have the sense some of these people might have been on drugs

sonlypuppyfat · 26/06/2019 21:56

People are very odd. I had a silly argument with my neighbour who told me her mum had died, to shut me up. I saw her mum later that day!!

SpanglyPop · 26/06/2019 21:58

Oh god totally normal for Bournemouth yes and there are a lot of drugs there now it's really going downhill. As are a lot of seaside towns. For some reason the sea attracts drug users. Poor you.

Maryqueenofscots83 · 26/06/2019 22:00

@sonlypuppyfat

Lol. That is very weird! Did she think you wouldn't find out?!

Maryqueenofscots83 · 26/06/2019 22:03

OK I'm glad to hear that a few people say this about drugs. I was starting to feel targeted.

When people are on drugs do they mock people and take the piss? Suppose it depends on the drug and the person

Once when I worked in a shop when I was younger we had two men come in, a staff member said they were definitely on drugs (not sure how she knew) and they were thrown out for being rude, insulting and taking the piss out of the person on the till. They were sneery, really nasty and mocking like some of the people I've encountered here.

I have limited experience of drugs so don't know how people act.
