AIBU about ham, or is DH

Our marriage is very troubled at the moment, new baby, sleep deprived, yada yada.

We've been having a lot of arguments lately, some the same old stuff, some new old stuff I can deal with, new stuff is hard, as it involves my family. In particular my dad, who is extremely annoying and needy, finding himself dumped by his partner and post surgery, so been spending more time with him lately, a few issues has cropped up with DH about this but have kind of dealt with it.

Now, back to the ham

Today, DH text me while he was at work and I was looking after DD1 and DD2 asking if I was going to Aldi over weekend, can I get him some ham trim, mayo, apples and "Best of both" bread.

I go to Aldi as I need to pick up a few bits for my dad who is unable to go shopping g at the moment, picked up a few bits for our upcoming holiday, then picked-up the bits DH wanted.

Just sat down after getting DDs to bed and this is the conversation:

DH "did u look at that ham when you bought it?" (I'm sensing a tone here too)

Me "yeh why, is it out of date?"

DH "it's not ham trimmings (it is) it's six thick pieces of ham, it's inedible, unusable why didn't you look at it when you bought it"

Me "are you for real? I had both squirming DDs in the trolley and your having a go for not looking at the ham?"

DH "I've now got to go out tomorrow and get ham and I didn't want to just because you couldn't be arsed to look at it"

We are now not talking!?
A bit stunned to be honest.

AIBu to not check a pack of ham trim before putting it in the trolley? Ham trim does come in all different shapes and sizes to be fair but come on?!

What is ham trim?

Shouldbedoing · 18/05/2019 19:52

Ooh I'm raging on your behalf
He needs to FOTTFSOFATFOSM

SansasSnatch · 18/05/2019 19:52

Yabu for eating ham trim Grin

Pinkyponker · 18/05/2019 19:54

He sounds like a knob. Sorry

GarthFunkel · 18/05/2019 19:54

So you bought good ham and he wanted bitty ham and now he's all upset about the good ham? Give him a pair of scissors and let him make the good ham into bitty ham.

ethelfleda · 18/05/2019 19:55

What on earth is ham trim? Sounds awful.

MissMary0fSweden · 18/05/2019 19:55

He's being unreasonable.

But... I do know what he means about looking at the ham Grin sometimes it's a full pack of thin off cuts, sometimes it's just like a few thick slices. And sometimes, heaven forfend, you get the end bit of the ham... like a rounded, creased piece. Kind of looks like you got the pigs arsehole.

TurnOffTheTv · 18/05/2019 19:55

With the back story, YANBU.

BUT! I’m really funny about ham, only certain ones I’ll eat Blush

My DH sometimes buys breaded, why?? Why would you eat that

TheMsMurphy · 18/05/2019 19:55

Can you cut it in to little pieces for him?

Blackswing12 · 18/05/2019 19:55

Is it ham trimmings or thick slices. Tbf I have no idea what ham trimmings are? I’m imagining scraps?

Sexnotgender · 18/05/2019 19:56

I’ve absolutely no idea what ham trim is!?

Why is thick ham unusable? Do you not own knives, then he can make it usable- I assume he wants his thick ham to be thin ham.

He’s being a dick.

Michaelbaubles · 18/05/2019 19:58

Ham trim is packs of scraps of ham they sell in Aldi - it’s cheaper than ham slices but it’s off cuts from the “good” ham so if you’re not fussed about uniform slices it’s a really good buy - better quality meat for the same price as cheap crap ham. But it’s a bit luck of the draw what sort of pieces you get in it.

SoCallMeMaybe · 18/05/2019 19:58

I’m funny about ham too.

If I’m honest it sounds like the sort of petty argument DH and I would have when we had young babies and were mired in sleep deprivation.

MissMary0fSweden · 18/05/2019 19:59

Ham trim is just a package of the off cuts from a joint of ham. Aldi and Lidl do them but you can also buy them at our local farm shops.

Blackswing12 · 18/05/2019 19:59

Yeh ham trim is like scraps but to be fair Aldi's ham trim is usually good

(Totally agree with PP about the end -pigs arsehole bit)

Would there be a particular reason he instigated a row?

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 18/05/2019 20:00

I've bought the ham trimmings from Aldi, used then in a quick carbonara. I did have to rifle through half a dozen packs, some were fatty, done were weird end bits, some were chunks/really thick bits, I chose the latter to dice up as throw into pasta, they would've have been great for sandwiches to be honest. However you had two small children with you as if he's that fussed he can get his own bloody ham!

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 18/05/2019 20:01

Wouldn't have been great...

Bluntness100 · 18/05/2019 20:01

I'm struggling to understand the issue and why he can't eat the slices?

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 18/05/2019 20:01

He's being ridiculous, the whole point of trimmings is that you get whatever shapes they trim off. If he wants predictable shapes, it's not trimmings he wants!

GlossyTaco · 18/05/2019 20:02

Ah , thanks for the explanation ppsSmile

He should've said thank you op. He can get his own ham from now on.

LyndzB · 18/05/2019 20:02

Agree with socallmemaybe

If this is normal behaviour then your dh is a knob.

If this is new, I'd put it down to sleep deprivation. He's still unreasonable. But
My husband I had had the weirdest arguments over the smallest shit when we were so tired!

Bluntness100 · 18/05/2019 20:03

I don't actually understand what the off cuts of a bit of ham are. Is it bits that don't come out as a full slice?

DogHairEverywhere · 18/05/2019 20:03

He's being an arsehole. Perhaps he should climb into the packet of ham along with the other pig arseholes and give you a break. Grin
