To think Emily in Friends was just as bad as Ross?

Complete bridezilla before the wedding, then Ross says the wrong name and she's upset (understandable) but then insists he go permanently NC with one of his best friends! AIBU or is that just too far?

I'm ill and binge watching the show on the sofa and I have several complaints this time around Grin

Well it was a plot device to make her the bad guy and him the good guy.

But Ross was consistently an arsehole.

ColinsTrumpet · 15/05/2019 09:52

She was AWFUL.

But in fairness if my fiancé had said the wrong name at the altar I’d have wanted him to cut contact too.

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2019 09:53

He didn't just say the wrong name, he said it while he was saying his vows. At a time when he should be thinking only about his wife to be. Therefore suggesting that he had huge unresolved issues with her. I can see why Emily felt a fresh start with her out of their lives was the only way they could actually make a go of their marriage

KimberWozRobbed · 15/05/2019 09:54

I don 't like Emily but in no way is she as bad as Ross.

DesperadoDan · 15/05/2019 09:55

I didn’t like the Emily character at all, she was irritating but I can understand her being peeved about Ross getting her name wrong.
She probably tried to enforce no contact because she knew how Ross felt about Rachel.

JaretsGirlfren · 15/05/2019 09:56

Emily was in the right! Rachel wasn’t just one of his best friends, she was his ex who he was still in love with. #TeamEmily

KimberWozRobbed · 15/05/2019 09:56

He didn't just say the wrong name, he was going on their honeymoon with someone else too

AiryFairy1 · 15/05/2019 09:56

I also recently rewatched the entire boxset... and also picked up a lot ofThings.

Agree re Emily... it was a whirlwind romance and I think the reality of upsticksing from her comfortable fancy home in Shropshire/ London to be with someone she maybe subconsciously knew was still in love with his ex made her try to take some control of the relationship (still came across as a dick move though)🤔
And I feel Joey is very under appreciated and they often make him out to be very unintelligent, when he actually offers some very kind and wise advice (sometimes!)

Yes I’m a bit over invested Grin

Oakmaiden · 15/05/2019 09:56

Ross was vile.

Emily was unpleasant.

Rachel was selfish.

So yeah.

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2019 09:57

At the point where he was saying his vows, she (Emily) wasn't on his mind!

SlimGin · 15/05/2019 09:57

Well she was right, he did get back with Rachel.

She was a bit bridezilla but what about Monica asking Chandler to spend his whole life savings that he was going to use for a house, on one wedding day.

ReasonablyIntelligent · 15/05/2019 09:57

Emily was a prat (she ran into another marriage straight after didn't she?) but her level of prat aligned perfectly with Ross's, they were both impulsive, controlling, self absorbed idiots.
So well matched.

SneakyGremlins · 15/05/2019 10:02

Grin glad a lot of you agree!

To be fair though it wasn't just about the name. She also 'caught' him going away on THEIR honeymoon with the woman he named in their vows who also happens to be an ex as well. I mean from our point of view yeah they are good friends, been for years but Emily isn't part of that. In her eyes there is more going on. I would have gone full Emily as well.
Also, Rachel had feelings for Ross and did go there to confess even though changed her mind. She also probably saw the honeymoon as an opportunity to get closer to Ross.
I think Emily is the victim here. Can you imagine if Emily went to the relationships board and put her story there. LTBs would be flying all over! And i wouldn't be surprised if people were advising her that her H should go NC with his ex and that he should earn her trust again.

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2019 10:07

Yes yes yes and yes! Agree with everything

Pgqio · 15/05/2019 10:08

There was zero chemistry between the characters/actors, the whole plot felt forced. And although they were comedy gold Jennifer Saunders and Tom Conti as Emily's self involved truly awful parents would have been a huge red flag.

SneakyGremlins · 15/05/2019 10:10

Not as forced as Rachel and Joey...

Even the meekest and mildest MNer, the type who invites the homeless to live in their garden sheds, would raise an eyebrow at their groom making their vows to an ex on their wedding day.

And dont forget, Emily had just moved to NY after the traumatic experience of being killed in a car accident.

She gets a pass from me

clairelee17 · 15/05/2019 10:12

In real life, Helen Baxendale was pregnant with her first child at the time so didn't want to travel to the US to film. Therefore, they had to give her character a way of 'getting out', so hence, why they probably made Emily a stuck-up cow who couldn't forgive him. The storyline may have been different had her circumstances been different.

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2019 10:12

Took me ages to figure that one out :o poor woman has no luck does she

WaitingInTheBushesOfLove · 15/05/2019 10:13

Just to add that of all Ross's girlfriends i liked Emily the least and i agree with PP that she was unpleasant, BUT i do think her reaction and attitude after the wedding wasn't unreasonable.

I think Julie was the best of them all.

myhamster · 15/05/2019 10:15

If Emily came on to MN and posted "my new H said his XGF name during his vows at our wedding, WWYD?" she would to told to LTB, that it would never work out, that Rachel is the OW and that if she does decide to try and make it work, he must go NC with Rachel.

so YABU Grin

I watch Friends on a loop now that my DD has got into it........

Pgqio · 15/05/2019 10:16

Is it true that Emily was written out because the actress was pregnant? I genuinely can't see how she could have stayed in the show. The only reason Phoebe was "allowed" to marry an outsider was because it was the final season, otherwise they would eventually have had to pair up all six of them as other relationships destroyed the cast dynamic.

adaline · 15/05/2019 10:17

Emily as a character was designed to make people feel sorry for Ross though.

But if anyone came on here and said their husband said their ex's name at the alter and then tried to go on honeymoon with her, they'd all be told to LTB, regardless of how shitty their previous behaviour had been.

TheGoogleMum · 15/05/2019 10:23

Ross having to give up his apartment and get rid if all his furniture for her to never even come over again is unreasonable to me. The nc with Rachel I can see why to be fair, it's just knowing the characters as we do we know how unrealistic it is as she's so close with all the other friends and his sister.
