To think Emily in Friends was just as bad as Ross?

Complete bridezilla before the wedding, then Ross says the wrong name and she's upset (understandable) but then insists he go permanently NC with one of his best friends! AIBU or is that just too far?

I'm ill and binge watching the show on the sofa and I have several complaints this time around Grin

In conclusion op we could not BE any less agreeing with you

RasberryRoyale · 15/05/2019 11:09

Monica yelled at Ross about the wedding because Emily wanted to postpone it when they discovered the venue was being demolished essentially asking all the American guests to fly back out and pay for hotels all over again. I can only imagine the stick she would have got on mumsnet for that had it been real. “ it’s the day before my overseas wedding, AIBU to postpone it?”

Monica tried to explain to Ross that Emily wanted the perfect day etc.

To be fair, US comedy writers are pretty terrible at writing for British characters. They either end up as ‘cor blimey O’Reilly, up the apples and pears, gawd bless the Queen Mum’ types, or ridiculously posh (hence Emily’s parents own a virtual stately home).
Though nothing will ever be as bad as the Moon family on Fraiser. They were appalling. Fraiser is one of those brilliant, timeless comedies that rarely puts a foot wrong. And then they gave us the Moons!!!!!

Similar to Maris, they had been built up to be wildly unrealistic. And when described in the occasional throw away line, they were funny. It's a case of the humour being 100% in the telling while the showing can never, ever work. And like Maris, they should have remained off screen.

RasberryRoyale · 15/05/2019 11:12

I totally forgot about Ben at the wedding. Once Emma comes along he’s never mentioned. He never even meets his sister.

ThatCurlyGirl · 15/05/2019 11:14

Ross is a nutjob when I look back and watch them again!

So controlling and jealous when Rachel worked with mark, screaming at her and throwing her shoes behind her to get ready quicker for his event, awful to his student girlfriend having a go at her wearing a bikini to spring break, following her on spring break... guy is a totally controller!

Disclaimer - I know it's only TV he just annoys me because nobody properly calls him out on it in the show!

KaliforniaDreamz · 15/05/2019 11:17

There was a friends thread recenlty and someone linked to the writers being absolute dicks when a young assistant writer took them to court. i will try to find link.
(explained a lot.)

RasberryRoyale · 15/05/2019 11:19

Monica did once... as did Carol. But only twice in ten series is pretty bad. But then Ross was the favourite of his parent’s, so he was probably one of those kids used to getting away with awful behaviour and it carried on into adulthood.

I’ve watched Friends way too much..

Lweji · 15/05/2019 11:20

I also wish Joey and Rachel never happened and that he had ended up with Phoebe

But I love Mike. His character goes so well with Phoebe.

Regarding Emily, this
The only unreasonable thing Emily did was keep on trying.
She knew he had unresolved issues still loved Rachel and rushed the wedding, then offered him a way to stay married. In a way I understand her not wanting to dump him, but she should have, very early on, but definitely after the wedding, which should have been annulled, not a divorce.

Lweji · 15/05/2019 11:22

And keeping messages from other men when they were living together after having Emma (watching it atm).

FlossieTeacakesFurCoat18 · 15/05/2019 11:25

I think Rachel's far worse than Ross... she sabotages every relationship he has after her. Convincing Bonnie to shave her head, planning to ruin Emily's wedding, then when she's pregnant insisting he can't date anybody at all! I don't know why the narrative has become all about Ross being controlling!

mabelsgarden · 15/05/2019 11:28

@StillCoughingAndLaughing

That made me laugh! Grin

So true as well. Also, in every film or show the Americans make, the British are not only either cockney or posh, but they are often the bad guy!

Wonder why Americans never make shows or films where the British person is a Geordie or a brummie or a scouser?!

When I went to the states several years back, someone asked me where I was from. I said Chester. They said 'is that anywhere near London?' Confused

The UK is NOT just LONDON! Hmm

x2boys · 15/05/2019 11:29

He did date Mona though when Rachel was pregnant?

Lweji · 15/05/2019 11:29

She was going to tell Ross she loved him, but she didn't in the end.
And the pregnancy, I think it's only fair that it's not only women who are affected. Good on her.

x2boys · 15/05/2019 11:32

@mabelsgardenGrin I visited a friend when I was in my 20,s in Boston she tried to get us tickets for the Rikki Lake show just so.we could be in the audience and say we were from Manchester, near London England .

Lweji · 15/05/2019 11:32

He did date Mona though when Rachel was pregnant?

Ah, yes, and failed to tell Mona that Rachel was having his baby, and that she was living with him. Oh, and then swapping keys only to change his locks the day after. Hmm

x2boys · 15/05/2019 11:35

I know Lweji ,Mona put up with a surprising amount of crap from himGrin

Buffy81 · 15/05/2019 11:38

@ x2boys yeah he did date Mona during the first few months when Rachel was pregnant and then nearly went on date with the sales assistant from the baby store but didn't as Rachel was jealous

I think we could sit here all day and talk about the dynamics of the relationships that Ross and Rachel had be it with them together or with other people

Coolegary1 · 15/05/2019 11:47

Ami the only one who thinks as beautiful as Rachel is, Monica was really the stunner. Never got this whole Rachael always got the boys attention over anyone else.

prh47bridge · 15/05/2019 11:49

well actually she got a week after "shall I continue...?"

Four months actually! The "shall I continue" was at the end of the last episode of season 4. She had until the first episode of the next season.

x2boys · 15/05/2019 11:54

I think they were both beautiful in their own way, but Monica was supposed to have been obese in high school, whereas Rachel was pretty and spoiled (although huge nose) and had lots of male attention so was probably supposed to be more confident,Monica didn't go without make attention as an adult plus she was more successful in relationships.

ponyprincess · 15/05/2019 12:09

Love a good Friends thread

Ross and Emily had no chemistrt

Jennifer Saunders was brilliant as her mom

There. You. Are. (that line always makes me laugh and yes I have watched it too many times!)

StealthPolarBear · 15/05/2019 12:14

Good point phr, I didn't actually watch it at the time

SneakyGremlins · 15/05/2019 13:03

"I'll feel better when I'm there. Then I can know where you are all the time."

Hmm
