Cadbury DarkMilk - Marketing Ploy??

Honeydukes92 · 26/04/2019 09:15

So I saw an advert for dark milk Cadbury bars the other day. Starring a pop star from a band (admittedly before my time) strongly trying to appeal to the 40+ market.

If you don’t know who I am then you’re too young and can sod off...basically 🙄 Awesome!

I’ve tried dark milk and it’s nice, but it’s basically what Cadbury used to taste like 10 years ago.

So I was sat there, watching this advert, which was basically saying - If you’re old enough to remember a time before we made our chocolate greasy, sugary and crap...we’ve made a bar for you. But its definitely YOUR tastes which have matured and not our chocolate which is now a diluted Hershey’s mess!!

AIBU or is this a terrible marketing ploy?

I currently have 5 large Cadbury Easter eggs in my house which will be donated to food bank as nobody here will touch them 🙈

The most annoying thing about those adverts is that the voiceover lady calls it "darkmiwk".

WonkoTheSane42 · 26/04/2019 10:05

@iwannaseehowitends Tony’s is a Dutch company. You could only import their chocolate until recently, but now Sainsbury’s sell a few varieties. I have heard it’s also sold in Selfridges. Hopefully it becomes more popular and gets picked up by other distributors, because it’s really good.

over50andfab · 26/04/2019 10:05

Makes me want to try it, and I like both the ads. 85g bars £1.00 in Asda, £1.50 elsewhere. There’s also an almond version.

ThanksItHasPockets · 26/04/2019 10:08

Haven’t tried the Cadbury but Montezuma have been doing a dark milk chocolate with 54% cocoa solids for years and it’s superb.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 26/04/2019 10:08

Well I’m going to look for some when I go shopping, so the advert’s worked on me. Let’s see if the taste does.

SapatSea · 26/04/2019 10:09

I want to try it. Perhaps it will taste like Green and blacks milk chocolate as Cadburys bought them out and were in turn bought by Mondelez.

SinkGirl · 26/04/2019 10:10

Tony’s is very good.

The saddest ones for me are things like chocolate orange and my old guilty pleasure, crunchie rocks. I was addicted to them but now they are inedible

DarlingNikita · 26/04/2019 10:10

Ahem, I mentioned Montezuma's earlier Wink

WonkoTheSane42 and IWanna, Tony's is also now available in Wholefoods Market.

Your unreasonable for not knowing that it was Jason Donovan and that he was not in a band. from the 80s. He was a soap star from the very wonderful (at the time) Neighbours, who married Kylie minogue (also a soap star), before the manufacturing machine of Stock Aitken and Waterman cynically got their hands on them. Hence "Especially for you".

However, it is a sic marketing ploy (simply because we're gullible for nostalgia) but I don't buy Cadburys chocolate, it tastes different since Kraft took it over.

PS: You may not be being unreasonable, but I'm the demographic it's trying to reach and I found my first grey hair yesterday, so feeling a little tetchy Grin

NicoAndTheNiners · 26/04/2019 10:11

I've just run to the shop to buy some to try it out.

Have got home and realised it's gluten free unlike normal Dairy Milk so now I have to save it for coeliac dd. So am sad I can't try it until she gets home but she will be excited to have Dairy Milk which she misses.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 26/04/2019 10:11

OP do you secretly work for Cadbury’s?

Faultymain5 · 26/04/2019 10:12

PS just to let you know, he married Kylie in the soap. Not real life. I realise how that reads. But without an edit button....

Jaspermcsween · 26/04/2019 10:14

Those ads are great !
I like Jason’s kitchen

speakout · 26/04/2019 10:17

I've tried it, it tastes of cocoa powder and oil.
Grim.

Interesting, because I have checked the ingredients, it doesn't contain any oil.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 26/04/2019 10:18

I remember Kim and Jason.. And the ad has worked fir me as I'm going to look for a bar of this later. It sounds lovely. Cheers Op😁

Faultymain5 · 26/04/2019 10:18

I think we must be of an age where the most table thing about the add is Jason's kitchen! Grin

alittleprivacy · 26/04/2019 10:18

The Cadbury brand is absolute muck to me now. It could be the most delicious chocolate in the world and I just wouldn't want to put it in my mouth.

Walkacrossthesand · 26/04/2019 10:21

Aldi do a 40% chocolate in their range - Ghanaian I think it's called. Relatively cheap too .

beanaseireann · 26/04/2019 10:21

Iwannaseehowitends
On your recommendation I'm going to buy the Lily O' Brien Salted Caramel buttons.

BettysLeftTentacle · 26/04/2019 10:23

I thought the advert was hilarious. I’ve not seen the Kim Wilde one but alas I am just old enough to have fawned over Jason and know exactly what he was on about. I think it’s quite clever marketing actually. It’s no secret how the British public have been outraged about the direction Cadbury have taken since Kraft took over and with that comes a certain amount of nostalgia about the good old days of decent chocolate. These adverts are saying ‘We get it, it was better way back when, we’re listening so here’s something just for you refined old sods that can remember. We’re not changing anything else though.’ It’s ironic.

I must say I’ve had some Cadbury Easter chocolate over Easter and actually, it’s not been too bad. Definitely different to the usual Dairy Milk bars which I can’t even think about putting in my mouth. I quite like Tesco’s own and I stick to Lindt and Ritter.

Honeydukes92 · 26/04/2019 10:24

I actually hadn’t seen the Jason D advert until now. Just the Kim W one I posted. I didn’t know who she was, but I’m not a big music person at the best of times.

It is nice chocolate - I thought it was similar to old dairly milk but probably am wrong. I was a kid so probably don’t fully remember.

I used to LOVE dairy milk and remember it being such a treat. About 10 years ago (late teens) I was in New York and tried some Hersey’s and it was like sugary mud! Remember being so pleased we didn’t have that. But now more and more of the Cadbury range is sucking. I hated mini eggs this year, and anything in a multipack is terrible now. 😒

M&S did an amazing dark milk chocolate with dried raspberries bar a few years ago but then discontinued it.
Why????

Nousernameforme · 26/04/2019 10:29

It tastes a bit like crap dark chocolate which they already cover in bournville I wonder if this is just an old bournville recipe they have thinned down and rebranded.
Those ads are completely naff and i wouldn't buy it off the back of them I just tried it cause it was new.

I would pay for an old cadbury dairy milk bar, it wasn't good chocolate but it held its own special place in the chocolate world. The pointy squares and its sort of matt texture it would need the 2 piece wrapper as well.

speakout · 26/04/2019 10:32

I think the angle Cadbury's are going with this one is a milk chocolate with a hefty dose of cocoa.

Most dark chocolates contain low quantities of cream, milk, dairy fat or cocoa butter.
Most dark chocolate is brittle, doesn't melt so readily and doesn't not have that soft velvety creamy mouth feel that milk chocolate has.

Darkmilk is trying to keep that milky soft unctiousness while delivering a stronger chocolate taste.

I think it delivers.

I don't work for Cadbury!!

knobblykneesandturnedouttoes · 26/04/2019 10:38

Awful patronising adverts. But I am interested to taste the chocolate.
