MIL giving alcohol to my one year old

okay, it was a few sips but to me it is unacceptable. I kept my mouth shut and my DH eventually said I don't think its a good idea but it took him long enough and was only when I gave a few evils that it stopped. AIBU to feel really pissed off/disgusted by this or would you think its harmless.

I'm not happy with it and will be telling DH to have a word to say it is never to happen again or I will be having words and they will not be as pleasant. Am I over reacting?

You’re not overreacting, but why on earth did you keep your mouth shut? This is your child.

FilthyforFirth · 21/04/2019 15:48

0/10

Isth · 21/04/2019 15:48

Wtf? Why did you just sit there and let it happen?!

JoinTheDots · 21/04/2019 15:49

I would not have kept my mouth shut!!! Alcohol is basically poison. A few sips or not, its not funny, its not acceptable, and its bloody stupid.

YANBU in the slightest.

RosamundDarnley · 21/04/2019 15:50

Really? Hmm

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 21/04/2019 15:51

Behave your bloody selfHmm

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 21/04/2019 15:51

No, you are NOT overreacting. It is completely unacceptable, not to mention ILLEGAL, to give alcohol to a one-year-old child. If your DH doesn't have very strong words with his mother, I would be reminding him and her that you would be well within your rights to report them to the police.

deesolovely · 21/04/2019 15:51

TBH i think i was so schocked and was waiting for my husband to say something, not realising it would three sips for it to happen. Hold my hands up, I should have stopped it immediately. I think I'm a bit slow to criticise as I've had my issues in the past and I think because of this I can be overly critical and I'm trying to ease off as generally she is a lovely woman.

Wtf? No... Obviously YANBU...

Lizzie48 · 21/04/2019 15:56

I’m really shocked that anyone would think of giving alcohol to a one year old. You really should have stopped it straightaway but I get that you were in shock.

My DM gave me a little wine at age 6, mixing it with ribena to help me sleep when I had chicken pox badly. I think attitudes were different then (1970s), but I think to give a one year old alcohol is child abuse.

Flyinga · 21/04/2019 16:01

I can't think of any situation where I would give alcohol to a 1 year old.

Mari50 · 21/04/2019 16:03

Yeah, that’s actually illegal. Not just unreasonable

Threefaries · 21/04/2019 16:04

Was it mixed with coke?

It's crazy that people do this! One of my friends once gave another friends toddler sips of her prosecco and thought it was hilarious. My jaw was on the floor especially as his mother didn't ask her to stop! Probably the same as you though and didn't want to be seen to be over reacting!

Xyzzzzz · 21/04/2019 16:11

What? Seriously?

thefinn · 21/04/2019 16:12

Why did she do it? Is this serious?

spanishwife · 21/04/2019 16:13

Was it meat vodka or a bit of froth off a lager? Quite different

DishingOutDone · 21/04/2019 16:13

And to think someone is on here with a thread complaining about giving a 3 year old cola. Sorry OP I think there's a parenting fail here, you both should have stood up shouted NO!!! and took your child back.

spanishwife · 21/04/2019 16:13

*neat

Mummyoflittledragon · 21/04/2019 16:14

It’s illegal to give children younger than 5 alcohol. Don’t keep your mouth shut next time. This is very dangerous. How long ago? Monitor your child.

MissPollyHadADolly19 · 21/04/2019 16:15

No words but wtf Shock

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/04/2019 16:15

What on earth is she thinking of?!

Poisoning (because alcohol IS a poison) a baby!

Sorry OP, but you should have made your feeling known and told her that there is NO WAY she is ever looking after your child when you aren't there.

Stupid woman! Angry Angry Angry

VampirateQueen · 21/04/2019 16:16

I don't think YABU, I remember my cousin giving my DD a sip of red wine when she was 6 months old, I was fuming, my DM made out I was overreacting, it still pisses me off now.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 21/04/2019 16:16

Was it mixed with coke?

And if so, how many lines? Baby that age shouldn't be doing more than a couple of lines, even on a big night out. I know that probably seems strict in this day and age, but I don't believe in spoiling them.
