Lighthearted thread.

Watching Friends and I wish Joey and Rachel ended up together Sad

OP posts:

Can someone please give eg's of Ross' controlling behaviour.

Not letting Rachel go to a works lecture with another man.
Ripping up phone numbers of potential dates when they're not even together.
When Rachel has to work he turns up to her office and insists on staying there with a picnic because it's their anniversary.
He tries to make Rachel feel bad for working and focusing on her career.
He yelled at her for having Chinese with another man when they were on a break but it was perfectly okay for him to sleep with someone else.

goldengummybear · 27/02/2019 10:36

Joey and Phoebe has more chemistry but couldn't happen since he'd gone out with Ursula.

Joey and Rachel kept their relationships secret as they were worried about Ross' reaction. Ross was dating Charlie.
Monica and Chandler kept their relationship secret because they were worried about Ross' reaction

x2boys · 27/02/2019 10:41

Monica and Chandler kept their relationship secret from everyone!

adaline · 27/02/2019 10:43

Yes but they especially didn't want Ross to know. The only reason he didn't properly freak out is because he was on those pills after the sandwich incident at work!

x2boys · 27/02/2019 10:44

Rachel was just as bad ,turning up at his wedding, trying to stop in from sleeping with Julie ,getting Bonnie to shave her head

Buddyelf · 27/02/2019 11:00

Joey and Rachel should have never happened - the writers clearly ran out of ideas. When I originally watched friends I was so happy Rachel got off the plane but watching now in my 30's I think they were bad for each other and she should have gone to Paris.
Rachel only ever wanted Ross when she couldn't have him - Julie, Bonnie, Emily...
Ross was controlling and jealous, I hated how he was when she started working at Bloomingdales. He was happy to have a girlfriend with a manual job, somewhere he could see her but as soon as she started to develop her career he became horrible. Having said that he became one of my favourites in the later episodes - leather pants episode is genius!
Phoebe and David for me I'm afraid, although Phoebe's character became so mean. I rewatched the episode the other day were Monica is doing karaoke and her top goes see through and she just lets her carry on? She's not a nice friend.
Monica and Chandler all the way. I really like Richard but there was no way Monica would have been happy not having children and Chandler was a good boyfriend and husband to her.

I don't think the show as a whole has aged well. But it is interesting to see how much things have changed since it aired e.g Rachel hiring Tag because he's attractive (ep I'm watching now)

adaline · 27/02/2019 11:04

I actually don't think Rachel is a particularly likeable character relationships-wise. She didn't really treat any of her boyfriend's/love interests very well if you think about it!

NameChanger1975 · 27/02/2019 11:17

YABU - I would've been dissapointed if Rachel ended up with Joey instead of Ross.

I really liked Ross at the beginning especially when he bought Rachel a broach she'd seen for her birthday, when he missed going on the Discovery channel to look after her when she got injured & when we saw he getting ready to take her to the prom but then she went with Chip. I agree he was awful especially when he got so jealous over Mark but ultimately Ross was my favorite out of the three. Joey was too stupid & although Chandler was extremely funny his constant sarcasm would've eventually grated on me.

I hated the way Carol & Susan treated Ross over the pregnancy especially when they made a fuss over having Susans surname & not Gellar.

I loved the show but it had many continuity errors. My most confusing one was Monica introducing Rachel to Chandler at the beginning like they'd never met but in the flash backs we saw they already knew each other & kissed.

My least favorite storyline was Marcel. Too silly especially when they knew having him was illegal however Ross would walk the streets with him on his shoulder.

The thing that gets me now is the causal use of porn and joey getting away with horrific treatment of women.

I still sort of love it though, it was an integral part of my adolescence.

goldengummybear · 27/02/2019 11:27

Monica and Chandler kept their relationship secret from everyone!

Ross was the last to find out because they were worried about his reaction.

Purrrplexed · 27/02/2019 11:30

I always found it weird how the guys openly perved over the girls. Also, I don't hold my sexuality over my male friends the way Phoebe, Monica and Rachel seemed to do.

x2boys · 27/02/2019 11:31

But it will.have aged I don't know why people are so surprised by.this it was first shown in 1994 that's 25 years ago,the f I was watching a comedy in 1994 that was 25 years old it would be from 1969!

loobyloo1234 · 27/02/2019 11:41

I hated Ross - although he did have two of the best moments - pivot and the spray tan. I think Rachel should have ended up with anyone but Joey or Ross tbh

LaurieMarlow · 27/02/2019 11:54

I know. I’m just aghast at my 13 year old self taking all this in.

dustarr73 · 27/02/2019 11:56

I think Rachel should have stayed on the plane.

Ben seemed to disappear as well.

LaurieMarlow · 27/02/2019 11:57

I don’t hate Ross as much as many others do, but most of those lauded Ross comedy golds moments make me cringe so hard.

Pivot is brilliant, but I actually can’t watch the spray tan, leather trousers, fajitas episodes.

TedAndLola · 27/02/2019 12:12

There was zero romantic chemistry between Joey and Rachel. They were like brother and sister and it was sweet, then the romance storyline was a car crash.

Phoebe was an awful person in the later series. Mike was too good for her.

Susan and Carol behaved appallingly to Ross after the breakup. "It's my baby too" fuck off!

Gavin and Rachel were well suited but I think she and Ross made it work.

It bothered me how their lives continued as normal after Emma was born. The pregnancy storyline was good but it didn't work once she was born. I know this was because it's so hard working with child actors but they should have thought about that!

The adoption was also a bit uncomfortable. Naming one of the babies after the birth mother? We're supposed to believe nobody knew it was twins even though the doctors knew early on?

I don't mind Ross. I understand his fear of being cheated on after his break up and most of my favourite episodes are "his." The tan, I'm fine, the maple candy. He's a fantastic actor.

Loadashite · 27/02/2019 12:33

Am I right that Rachel turned down a great job in Paris to stay with Ross! Don't think they would end it like that now.

Bethward1996 · 27/02/2019 12:35

No! Ross was the best

lisamac28 · 27/02/2019 12:53

Although Ross had control and jealousy issues, surely the fact that Rachel never took any of his bullshit was also part of the storyline. She always stood up to him and for herself and I think he respected her for it. He never respected Mona, he treated her appallingly.

LaurieMarlow · 27/02/2019 12:54

Another thing that got me on the rewatch was Chandler/Monica’s reaction to their fertility issues. They’re sad for the rest of the episode and then by next episode they’re like ‘yay, let’s adopt’. I know it’s just a show but c’mon.

I think the format worked well when they were 6 Singleton buddies hanging out/dating (with Ben in the background as a cute toy for them to play with when it suited).

But it fell apart as soon as children became a real, actual thing for them to deal with. Tbf, the producers knew that too and stopped shortly after that point.

Graphista · 27/02/2019 16:01

X2boys yea I've always thought he actually put up with a lot re carol, Susan and Ben

I do love that scene with Ross, Susan and Phoebe stuck in the cupboard when Carols having the baby, basically Ben is named after Phoebe really.

And yes dustarr73 Rachel behaves appallingly too! That whole relationship is so toxic to anyone that gets mixed up in the mess.

I'm also of the opinion, yes they were on a break, that was still a really shitty thing he did!

As chandler said "bullets have left guns slower!"

It wasn't love, perhaps limerance? If it was love another woman wouldn't even have been of interest to him.

"Monica and Chandler all the way. I really like Richard but there was no way Monica would have been happy not having children and Chandler was a good boyfriend and husband to her." Totally agree!

That scene where he's persuading erica to let them adopt her baby?

Hands down THE most moving scene in the ENTIRE series

"And when that day finally comes, I'll learn how to be a good dad. But my wife... she's already there. She's a mother... without a baby... Please?"

Also I don't normally like slapstick and mainly I love chandler for his sarcasm and quips but the funniest scene that still makes me laugh is this:

m.youtube.com/watch?v=sDJhccm_iz0

Another reason Joey and Rachel would never have worked - Ross would NEVER have got over it and Joey would have known that and would have felt too guilty and Joey was at heart a sweet guy who couldn't hurt a friend like that.
