shins I was always really pissed off at the reactions of Monica and Chandler at the thought of the baby's father being in prison. It's probably a sensitive topic with me as I myself was the child whose father was in prison but it wound me up!

I found the classism horrible, the way they make fun of the young girl whose twins Chandler and Monica adopt. She's portrayed as this sort of trashy yokel.

Chandler was always my favourite "I'm not great at the advice. Could I interest you in a sarcastic comment?" ARF grin

I have that on a hoodie. People get proper excited when they read it Grin

I wish Phoebe had stayed with David. Frustrated me that they had him in and out for so long to just be rudely shoved to the side by Mike Angry

I think it worked well with them as singletons but also enjoyed Monica and Chandler getting together because they did the storylines so well.

It would have been easy to just make Monica and Chandler live happily ever after but they did the fear of commitment thing (which went along with chandlers character,) the proposal, the wedding planning, the fertility issues. It was all done really well and they didn't just suddenly change their characters because they were together.

Joey was awful in the end. In the early series you could see how he could pick up women easily with his looks and charm. Later series though he was just so stupid it wasn't believable that women would just throw themselves at him.

Yes @Helplessfeeling and @lololove yes like that one where she said

'my mother was killed by a drug dealer'
'You're mother killed herself'
'She was a drug dealer'

I feel like She just said whatever she wanted to at the time to suit the situation

Report
lololove · 03/03/2019 09:54

I think it's a mix of both? A fertile imagination adding to her traumatic events? Or her using it to manipulate other people with embellishments or bending things slightly so they "fit" the situation so she got her own way

I thought all that stuff that Phoebe came out with about her past and living on the streets was just her making it up- like her grandmother who made up stories about her Dad (and the picture of Einstein that she thought was her Granddad) I didn't actually realise it was supposed to be her real past.

I saw the episode where "Phoebe" does porn, and the joke "Lawrence of Her Labia" was used. So the most cringeworthy line in the risible SATC2 film wasn't even original!

I'm onto the final season now and I'm definitely not enjoying it as much as the earlier ones.

As PP said, the show worked brilliantly when they were singletons but towards the end it didn't work as well.

I used to think Friends shouldn't have ended when it did, but now I'm watching as I'm older I think they ended at the right time.

Imagine the AIBU

"Me and my husband had a whirlwind romance but he completely embarrassed me by saying his ex girlfriends name at the altar by mistake. Not only that, I refused to go on the honeymoon, and he took the very same ex!!! He lives in the US, I'm supposed to be moving there (he can't move here he has a son) he has a tight knit group of friends that include this ex. WIBU to tell him that our marriage will only work out if he doesn't see her again?"

Literally no one would think SWBU

Nah @GunpowderGelatine this is mumsnet. You'd get 8 pages of people saying "You sound very controlling. Isn't your DH allowed to have friends? My DH often goes off for weekends with his best friend who happens to be female and I'm totally cool with it because I'm not a jealous shrew like you."

Grin Grin Grin Grin

I don't think Ross was all that bad... when Rachel got a job via Mark and started going to dinner with him all the time "to talk about work" Ross realised Mark had an ulterior motive, and Rachel always denied this but Ross was spot on! And they WERE on a break (at her instigation)!

Plus there's that whole "Wanting to stop his wedding" thing... of the two of them I think she's worse.

X2boys yea I've always thought he actually put up with a lot re carol, Susan and Ben

I do love that scene with Ross, Susan and Phoebe stuck in the cupboard when Carols having the baby, basically Ben is named after Phoebe really.

And yes dustarr73 Rachel behaves appallingly too! That whole relationship is so toxic to anyone that gets mixed up in the mess.

I'm also of the opinion, yes they were on a break, that was still a really shitty thing he did!

As chandler said "bullets have left guns slower!"

It wasn't love, perhaps limerance? If it was love another woman wouldn't even have been of interest to him.

"Monica and Chandler all the way. I really like Richard but there was no way Monica would have been happy not having children and Chandler was a good boyfriend and husband to her." Totally agree!

That scene where he's persuading erica to let them adopt her baby?

Hands down THE most moving scene in the ENTIRE series

"And when that day finally comes, I'll learn how to be a good dad. But my wife... she's already there. She's a mother... without a baby... Please?"

Also I don't normally like slapstick and mainly I love chandler for his sarcasm and quips but the funniest scene that still makes me laugh is this:

Another reason Joey and Rachel would never have worked - Ross would NEVER have got over it and Joey would have known that and would have felt too guilty and Joey was at heart a sweet guy who couldn't hurt a friend like that.

Another thing that got me on the rewatch was Chandler/Monica’s reaction to their fertility issues. They’re sad for the rest of the episode and then by next episode they’re like ‘yay, let’s adopt’. I know it’s just a show but c’mon.

I think the format worked well when they were 6 Singleton buddies hanging out/dating (with Ben in the background as a cute toy for them to play with when it suited).

But it fell apart as soon as children became a real, actual thing for them to deal with. Tbf, the producers knew that too and stopped shortly after that point.

Although Ross had control and jealousy issues, surely the fact that Rachel never took any of his bullshit was also part of the storyline. She always stood up to him and for herself and I think he respected her for it. He never respected Mona, he treated her appallingly.

No! Ross was the best

Am I right that Rachel turned down a great job in Paris to stay with Ross! Don't think they would end it like that now.

Report
TedAndLola · 27/02/2019 12:12

There was zero romantic chemistry between Joey and Rachel. They were like brother and sister and it was sweet, then the romance storyline was a car crash.

Phoebe was an awful person in the later series. Mike was too good for her.

Susan and Carol behaved appallingly to Ross after the breakup. "It's my baby too" fuck off!

Gavin and Rachel were well suited but I think she and Ross made it work.

It bothered me how their lives continued as normal after Emma was born. The pregnancy storyline was good but it didn't work once she was born. I know this was because it's so hard working with child actors but they should have thought about that!

The adoption was also a bit uncomfortable. Naming one of the babies after the birth mother? We're supposed to believe nobody knew it was twins even though the doctors knew early on?

I don't mind Ross. I understand his fear of being cheated on after his break up and most of my favourite episodes are "his." The tan, I'm fine, the maple candy. He's a fantastic actor.

I don’t hate Ross as much as many others do, but most of those lauded Ross comedy golds moments make me cringe so hard.

Pivot is brilliant, but I actually can’t watch the spray tan, leather trousers, fajitas episodes.

I think Rachel should have stayed on the plane.

Ben seemed to disappear as well.

I know. I’m just aghast at my 13 year old self taking all this in.

I hated Ross - although he did have two of the best moments - pivot and the spray tan. I think Rachel should have ended up with anyone but Joey or Ross tbh
