Lighthearted thread.

Watching Friends and I wish Joey and Rachel ended up together Sad

I have just started season 10 on Netflix. I had forgotten just how crap this season is - bloody Ross and his "I'm FINE" when he finds out about Rachel and Joey, and I don't think I can watch the one where she doesn't go to Paris - I think I might actually pull something internally from shouting at the bloody TV.

The only redeeming feature - Chandler and his glasses Grin

GunpowderGelatine · 26/02/2019 01:10

annie your husband is also your daughter? Bit weird.

Also, reported

Oceanbliss · 26/02/2019 02:22

I couldn't stand Ross either. So many of his relationships with women where if they were posted on Aibu there would be unanimous LTB responses and posters pointing out all the red flags for emotional abuse, jealous and controlling behavior. A pp dared someone to post the Emily and Ross wedding as an Aibu. We should do it and when there has been loads of responses tell everybody that it was an episode of friends, gotcha. It could be a funny April Fools prank. Wink

She should have stayed on the plane. She had an amazing opportunity, she shouldn't have sacrificed it for him. If he had been a decent man he would have wanted her to have this opportunity and he wouldn't have begged her to get off the plane. He would have caught the next plane to Paris. Anyway I love Joey and Rachel's friendship but couldn't imagine them as a couple. I would have liked Rachel to meet someone new in Paris.

Agree Emily was so justified in her response to Ross except for giving him another chance after she saw him and Rachel at the airport about to enjoy her and his honeymoon together. Ugh he's a f*cking creep for doing that. And Rachel turning up at their wedding like that. She should have listened to Hugh Laurie on the plane. His character was spot on with his response to her.

Monica and Chandler perfect. They were both my favourite characters right from the beginning. Has anyone watched Cougar Town with Courtney Cox? The actor who plays Chandler (temporarily forgot his name) guest starred in it as a rich billionaire who falls in love with Jules (Courtney Cox) and does probably the most amazing marriage proposal on TV. At the end of the episode when he is leaving he calls her Monica. They are so good together and great chemistry and so funny. I love them to bits. I wish they would have their own show together. I would be so addicted Grin

amrscot · 26/02/2019 10:07

I'm watching the last season, I think Ross and Charlie are such a better suited couple.

I actually don't find the scenes with Joey and Rachel wrong or uncomfortable at all!

OP posts:
EdWinchester · 26/02/2019 13:58

Nooo! Rachel and Joey together was just so unlikely. There was no chemistry between them whatsoever. And Joey was so incredibly stupid - would any woman find him attractive after speaking to him for 5 minutes?

I have been re-watching them as my husband is away (he won't have it on!) and realised that they are all pretty awful people. I didn't notice this years ago.

ZanyMobster · 26/02/2019 14:03

I found Joey and Rachel uncomfortable, no chemistry but that was probably intentional given that the storyline was that they were not actually physically attracted to each other when it came to going further than kissing.

Loved Monica and Chandler, and also Monica and Richard. Rachel should definitely had got with Gavin or Joshua. Gavin was gorgeous!! I did like the storyline of Ross and Rachel getting back together, I thought it was well written really and finished everything off properly.

PrincessDaff · 26/02/2019 14:30

I hate how they made Joey more stupid in the later episodes. I can not watch the episode when he is trying to learn French it makes me so mad!!! Phoebe is by far the worst character though! The episode when she thinks her mum is the cat is just awful! She would never have been friends with the rest of them.

Rachel and Ross should not have ended up together but she definitely should not have ended up with Joey.

CheeseWheel · 26/02/2019 16:19

Joey and Rachel I prefer over Ross and Rachel because Ross is an abusive controlling asshat. My preference would have been for Rachel to get on the plane and make a great life in Paris without either of them.

NormaLouiseBates · 26/02/2019 16:51

I'm just re-watching the entire series and I don't think it's aged great to be honest. I'm enjoying it mostly - there are still some proper LOL moments:

  • Ross and his leather trousers
  • Ross and the tanning salon
  • Ross and the sofa - PIVOT!
  • Monica putting the turkey on her head and scaring the shit out of Joey

Something that's really bugged me though is the story line when Chandler pretends to Monica that he's freaked out by the answer-machine message about the wedding that she's booked at the museum. Pheobe is hiding in the bedroom and comes out after Monica leaves and says "did Hildy show you the venue?" and Chandler replies something like "yes, it's perfect" but then they don't get married there. It's always annoyed me!

Whitney168 · 26/02/2019 19:32

I rewatched these a while ago and I was struck by how dated they were and how bad and lazy the writing was, maybe now there’s more channels and things like Netflix and Amazon Prime we’ve come to expect better, but if Friends was on today I don’t think it would have the following that it did.

Friends IS on today. It's been on constantly, running from start to finish, forever, and still has a huge following. I still love it, and the writers and cast are still certainly laughing their ways to the bank with their 'bad and lazy writing'.

cricketmum84 · 26/02/2019 19:44

Totally agree. They were so adorable together. I love how Rachel brought out that really loving protector side of Joey.

Not over invested at all.... 😂

Drogosnextwife · 26/02/2019 19:57

Graphista

When I first started reading that I thought all those things had actually happened. I'm pretty gutted they didn't 😂

I hated Ross too he was an abusive twat. Even watching it as a child I hated him, now I can see exactly why.

I actually quite liked Joey and Rachael together.

They dumbed them all down by the last series. Except Pheobe, for some reason.

Witchtower · 26/02/2019 20:16

So grateful when that relationship ended!! I really wish it never happened. That was prob the only story line I disliked from friends.

googlyeyedpirate · 26/02/2019 20:25

Id marry Ross and have his babies

KitKat1985 · 26/02/2019 22:38

I didn't like the Rachel and Joey storyline at all. They didn't work together and having already been friends for years, I just can't see it happening.

adaline · 26/02/2019 22:51

I think Emily's behaviour after the wedding was justifiable but she was also pretty awful to Rachel beforehand too.

Ross was a dick to Rachel but he was also treated really really badly by Carol which seems to be completely overlooked. He's expected to be totally fine with her affair partner raising his child - in real life he would get so much sympathy for that!

lololove · 26/02/2019 23:10

I'm with you, OP. I love Friends but I'd hate to be 'friends' with most of them in real life (particularly the Gellars )

I really enjoyed the Joey/Rachel storyline - I think she brought out the better person in him rather than the man wh*re.

Ross and Rachel was not a healthy relationship - the whole incident with Mark is just one example of it!

propertywoe · 26/02/2019 23:12

Ross and Rachel was similar to Ted and Robin in HIMYM, you can only be friends with your ex when there is no possibility of a future relationship otherwise you are just messing up other people’s lives as well as your own.

Thegreymethod · 27/02/2019 00:28

YABU Rachel and Joey should have never happened (but It did lead to one of my favourite episode's..... the one where Ross is fine!) Rachel and Ross all the way for me

Graphista · 27/02/2019 01:17

Graphista

😂😂😂

Sorry

"but he was also treated really really badly by Carol which seems to be completely overlooked" I totally agree, as a bisexual woman it irks me that it seems to not be considered "as bad" that she cheated with a woman but of course it was just as much a betrayal, Ross himself points this out in "the one with the lesbian wedding" when he's being criticised for not wanting to go to the wedding

"She's my ex wife if she were marrying a guy none of you'd expect me to be there"

He also does the sweetest thing in telling carol like hell would he have ket his parents stop him marrying her, her parents homophobia is their problem, if she loves and wants to marry Susan she should.

I also love that the friends producers etc didn't cast a "butch" part of the couple of Susan and carol, playing into stereotypes.

HIMYM was just such an obvious friends rip off, they were just missing a Phoebe sub.

KitKat1985 · 27/02/2019 07:36

I think as a Friends aside, I always felt the character of Joey was the least developed by the writers. All the other characters 'grow up' throughout the 10 series and get married, have kids, develop their careers etc and just generally get more mature. All they really did with Joey was seem to make him stupider! 'The one where Joey speaks French' was almost cringeworthy.

dustarr73 · 27/02/2019 07:53

I think people forget what Rachel did as well. She went to London to tell Ross, she loved him.She got that woman Bonnie to shave her hair.So to me they where as bad as each other.

Phoebe was mean, she was my least favourite.Theres no way they would have been friends. And shes such a hypocrite. Pottery Barn wearing fur and working for a big chain.Shes just not very nice.

x2boys · 27/02/2019 08:17

Agree Graphista ,I also think it was hard for him that he was made to accept Susan being an equal parent, if Carol had met another man early in her pregnancy and insisted that it was his baby too and should also have his name than I think there would be rather more "upset" than there was but Ross was expected just to get on with it .

BitchQueen90 · 27/02/2019 09:22

Agree adaline I'm not a huge Ross fan but the whole Carol and Susan thing was awful for him. There was a scene where they are discussing giving Susan's last name to the baby and she says something like "it's my baby too" Hmm imagine if Carol had cheated with a man and he started getting involved with the pregnancy and saying things like that!

Purrrplexed · 27/02/2019 10:22

Can someone please give eg's of Ross' controlling behaviour. I'm blanking right now.
