Lighthearted thread.

Watching Friends and I wish Joey and Rachel ended up together Sad

OP posts:
GunpowderGelatine · 24/02/2019 23:14

And re the dumbing down - I recently for some reason watch an episode on series 1 immediately followed by a series 9 episode. It was like watching completely different characters. They almost because caricatures of themselves.

Rachel became more dirty and vapid
Ross more winey
Monica was far more shrill
Joey more ridiculously stupid
Chandler more scared and awkward
Phoebe became more judgemental.

I'm in the minority but I really enjoyed the first series

RedHelenB · 24/02/2019 23:17

The real us sue is that Phoebe should have ended up with David, not Mike. Joey was always going to end up a bachelor.

GunpowderGelatine · 24/02/2019 23:20

And big fat YES to Emily being 100% justified in her actions. She already agreed to move half way across the world for him, I hate that they acted like she was so awful for wanting him to cut ties with Rachel's

Imagine the AIBU

"Me and my husband had a whirlwind romance but he completely embarrassed me by saying his ex girlfriends name at the altar by mistake. Not only that, I refused to go on the honeymoon, and he took the very same ex!!! He lives in the US, I'm supposed to be moving there (he can't move here he has a son) he has a tight knit group of friends that include this ex. WIBU to tell him that our marriage will only work out if he doesn't see her again?"

Literally no one would think SWBU

nothingdaboutmyp · 24/02/2019 23:34

@GunpowderGelatine your post has really tickled me 😂😂😂 you're absolutely bang on!

bumbleymummy · 24/02/2019 23:38

Yuck! No! YABVVU. I hated those episodes. So cringeworthy. I hated the entire ‘Joey loves Rachel’ storyline.

KinkyHair · 24/02/2019 23:40

YANBU, Ross was AWFUL and emotionally abusive, but Rachel and Joey had fantastic chemistry

What?! Joey and Rachel had absolutely zero chemistry. It was painful to watch. Confused

GunpowderGelatine · 25/02/2019 00:00

@KinkyHair really, do you not think they were fun when they were roommates and dropping spaghetti etc on the floor?

TBH I hate Ross so much I'd have been happy if Rachel had ended up with Gunther

keepforgettingmyusername · 25/02/2019 00:04

Phoebe and Joey would have been better together than Rachel and Joey if they had to pair them with anyone.
Monica should have been with Richard.
Chandler should have ended up with Kathy.

GunpowderGelatine · 25/02/2019 00:07

I didn't like Kathy she was so boring and a big fat cheater. I like it when Janice was normal for a little while

Graphista · 25/02/2019 01:18

"I wish they'd brought Gavin in, I think maybe he was the one...." Totally agree!

NOOOOOO to Rachel & Joey, their relationship was always more "naughty kids mucking about in back of class"

Warning : I am WAY overinvested:

Ross & Rachel are divorced...again... (We know they married "properly" as it came up in spin off "Joey") they had another child together first but ultimately Rachel realised Ross is a possessive controlling twat!

Ross is perpetually single "4 divorces! 4 divorces!" Nobody sane will touch him!

Rachel ended up working with Gavin on a project after the divorce and they're dating but taking it slow, he's way more easy going than Ross and she's really focusing more on the kids for now, but it's looking really promising.

Monica and chandler were blessed with a surprise pregnancy several years after adopting the twins (they were never told they'd never conceived just that odds were against them), chandler is doing well at work high flying ad exec now, now that he's found his niche he's relaxed a bit, this has made him a chilled but not lax father. Monica has her own fabulous restaurant but she also enjoys being a mum. Monica is now the golden child with her mum 😉 this pisses Ross off royally! 😂

Richard was ok but it was ALWAYS Mondler. Right from the one with the birth.

Phoebe & Mike had quads, Phoebe is not quite the relaxed mum she thought she'd be and runs things to a tight schedule else "prison bitch" phoebe comes out, rather than Maria she's more captain von trapp! mikes gone back into law to support the family but mainly takes on "David and goliath" type cases championing the little guy and still plays at the piano bar on weekends. They're also teaching the kids to play instruments.

"Re: Phoebe I think David was the right guy for her in the earlier series but Mike was so much better for the person she had grown into in the later series, so I’m happy with Phoebe and Mike together" agree (sorry Helenadove ol' chum)

Joey settled down late in life with someone just as sweet as him, but with more common sense (thinking something like one of the sweet Amy Adams characters, although she's sweet she's no fool and called him on his shit early on in their relationship and told him he was capable of being a better man, that was the man she wanted to be with) and he's now a doting dad to 3 girls and loyal devoted husband. He's still acting but smaller, less "heartthrob" roles but more consistent work. His favourite thing to do is hang out with "his girls" swimming or camping or fishing and he swears he'll never let any of them date a guy like he was.

"Gunther gets with Brad Pitt" omg yes I love this! Brads character was quite camp wasn't he?

"and I am sorry Emily was so justified in her actions towards Ross" totally agree! Phoebe agreed too

"Oh my God! You got off easy! When my friend Silvie's husband said someone else's name in bed, she cursed him and turned his thingy green."

I'd have gone apeshit if my groom said his ex's name during the vows, even CONSIDERED taking her on OUR honeymoon and then lied about still being in contact - can you IMAGINE the Aibu?

Every poster on mn - "ltb!!!! he's not over her, he's completely disrespectful to you and never will be over her she'll be a spectre throughout your marriage, you deserve so much better"

I REALLY want to know which writer created the gellers - they absolutely understood toxic families SO WELL

I must admit I loved when Janice turned out to be chandlers online girlfriend and they just realise and kiss and the rest go "oh. My. God"

Rhubarbisevil · 25/02/2019 01:19

gunpowder I dare you to put that in AIBU 🤣🤣🤣😁

AGHHHH · 25/02/2019 02:01

Yabu it was so awkward

BitOfFun · 25/02/2019 02:05

Graphista, I really LOVE your projections Grin

Graphista · 25/02/2019 02:36

Graphista, I really LOVE your projections

Yay Grin

Thanks

MsHopey · 25/02/2019 06:21

I really enjoy watching Chandler and Monica together. They understand each other, their good and bad points and have worked through everything together.
I like Phoebe and Mike together, they're both quirky and musical. I didn't like David and I don't think someone can disappear for 6 years and come back and carry on where they left off. Mike playing the iniviable piano to impress Phoebe is one of my favourite scenes.
Ross and Rachel. No.
Ross and Joey. No.
Ross doesn't treat any of the women he dates very well, normally because of his infatuation with Rachel, but every woman has been second place to him and hes treated them like that. Emily, Bonnie, Mona, Julie, all get dumped or treated like shit in his efforts to be with Rachel.

calsovip · 25/02/2019 06:51

Absolutely not - Joey and Rachel were always pretty much like brother and sister imo. YABVU!

PinkSmitterton · 25/02/2019 07:44

Graphista, surely Joey ends up grey haired and distinguished, presenting an internationally successful British TV programme about his favourite hobby: sandwiches!

Rachel's character arc across the whole show was her going from a spoiled little rich girl to someone who was independent of her family, had a job and then a career. It was ruined by her leaving her dream work opportunity for Ross but would have been ruined if she'd left it for Joey too!

Ross' character arc on the other hand was that he finally got courage to ask out the girl he had a crush on when he was a teen (basically because she was pretty and popular and he was a nerd and wanted the valuation IMO) and then was forgiven the consequences of all his nasty actions: sleeping with someone else, lying to her about it, dating other people while she was pregnant but getting upset over her doing the same, lying to her about the annulment etc etc. Not a happy ending!

I think Joey was so disappointing as a character because he didn't really develop over the seasons at all

x2boys · 25/02/2019 09:33

@GraphistaGrin Did Rachel and Ross had more kids than?

HelenaDove · 25/02/2019 17:27

Channel 5 are showing them on a loop and we are back to series 1 again. Monica gets fat shamed quite a lot (Rachel has just done it) even though she lost the weight years previously.

Which bears out what ive said in the past. If you have ever been overweight some people will never let you forget it even years post weight loss.

Mummadeeze · 25/02/2019 17:35

Really wasn’t keen on Rachel and Joey together. Loved Matt Le Blanc in Episodes ( I know that is off topic but his character was so funny).

HelenaDove · 25/02/2019 17:54

Graphista i like your projections too.

Graphista · 26/02/2019 00:02

Awww thanks guys I'm all chuffed now

Graphista · 26/02/2019 00:03

Officially we know they remarried but we don't know if they had more kids but I think it would be likely

AlbertWinestein · 26/02/2019 00:31

“HelenaDove” I actually think that the Fat Monica thing is only typical of US tv in the early 2000s. You definitely wouldn’t get away with it here now. The closest to it is American Housewife, where she boasts about being the second fattest Mum in Westport (extremely wealthy and extremely thin suburb. Hence the joke).
