AIBU?

I get the impression sausage rolls and cheese twists ain’t gonna cut it.
Has to be cold so don’t have to reheat it, and travel in a car. Also not break the bank!
I was going to make a feta tart type thing with filo pastry, possibly a frittata with lots of herbs. Any other suggestions ?

Definitely hummus and some other vegan options. Crisps transcend any class divide I think! Cheese and nice crackers and chutney maybe? Smoked salmon and Parma ham. Getting hungry now!

I go to an English middle class buffet every summer.

Quiche, chicken, many salads - green, potato, rice, etc, a couple of Ottolengi salads, fancy pizza, mini sausages from butchers, baguette, butter.

Scones, jam, cream.
Much Cheese. Strawberries, trifle.

Lashings of wine and tea.

If I've got to contribute just one dish to a middle class buffet, I do thin brown bread, buttered, single layer of smoked salmon to cover the bread, cut into neat triangles, top with a miniscule sprig of dill, serve on a plate with lemon wedges round the side to squeeze over.

Quiche
Pate
French loaf
Cheese board (brie, blue cheese, garlic roulade, strong cheddar) served with grapes on the side.
Crackers
Caramelised onion marmalade
Crudités & dips
Platter of cold meats
Pesto pasta salad with pine nuts
Cocktail sausages (cooked in a marmalade glaze & sprinkled with sesame seeds)

(All if the above can be bought at Aldi & Lidl!)

I’d do a version of ploughman’s lunch
Nice crusty rolls - variety of styles
Joint of cooked ham and a roasted chicken
Pickles - onions/gherkins/olives
Chutneys
Salad - lettuce/tomatoes/cucumber/onion

Then maybe add in a potatoe salad, and a quiche.

Oh and some cheeses!!

And olives!

There are certain phrases that really get people's backs up on MN and middle class is one of them Grin kind of derailed your buffet thread!

I love a good buffet thread!!

@BeekyChitch

Mozzarella, tomato and basil on sticks

Please elaborate...these sound divine

Now I know I'm not middle class 🙈 I can neither pronounce nor spell most of this food! 😂 I'll stick to chicken drumsticks and ham butties thanks!

you have to make a load of Ottolenghi dishes. Plus some nice bread and cheese. Job done.

I like a popchip myself.

Whatever you go for, don't forget the bowl of pom bears Grin

Charcuterie? Lots of poncing and no cooking involved

@SummerStrong like the sausage, pickled onion and cheese sticks. Instead a leaf of basil, cube of mozza and a leaf of basil or a basil sauce over it - amazing!

Well I'm very middle class and my go-to dead easy dishes to take along would be:

Watermelon/feta/olive salad (nigella)
Roasted butternut with soy balsamic dressing (olive)
Tomato pesto mascarpone tart (olive)

And if there will be children, Nigella's cocktail sausages.

Buffets are rather LMC, aren’t they? Very net curtains and toilet rolls.
Maybe just serve a cold lunch?

What about the quinoa?

I can't say I have ever considered the social class of my guests when planning a menu. Some of the recipes here sound lovely.

The snobbishness of some of the responses, however, is excruciating.

Upper class - caviar obvs.

Middle class - hummus and olives

Working class - cocktail sausages out of a tin and a cheese and pineapple hedgehog.

Very low class - rustlers microwave burgers and a wide selection of pot noodles.

don't forget the Jamón ibérico. And a vegan alternative.

Serve gimlets for drinks

figs and blueberries and pomegranates for dessert

Or just serve the beige stuff and say 'that's why mum's go to Iceland' and that you're making a statement Wink

Watermelon feta salad is completely and utterly wrong this time of the year.

It belongs in the Summer.
