To ask what you would make for a middle class lunch buffet ?

I get the impression sausage rolls and cheese twists ain’t gonna cut it.
Has to be cold so don’t have to reheat it, and travel in a car. Also not break the bank!
I was going to make a feta tart type thing with filo pastry, possibly a frittata with lots of herbs. Any other suggestions ?

Well I dont know what a middle class buffet is, but I know what an upper class one is. This is because my dd1 had a royal visit yesterday from a senior member of the royal family at her place of work around lunchtime. She brought me the left overs from the buffet and I am sorry to disappoint by telling you they were mini pork pies and mini scotch eggs. I envisaged something truly wondrous. They are still sat there, not even eaten by my two grandsons.

Lotsofsausage · 18/01/2019 12:41

By ‘middle class buffet’ I mean a buffet for largely middle class people who would not put out bowls of wotsits and Iceland sausage rolls (which is what I would do) think a table full of salads, healthy ish home made stuff, like an ottolenghi cook book!
I can’t afford a load of charcuterie so I was wondering if there was anything I could make.

pea and feta salad - piss easy to make - always goes down well

BigSandyBalls2015 · 18/01/2019 12:41

Iceland platter Grin

MissMalice · 18/01/2019 12:41

Middle class buffet is still sausage rolls and cheese twists but you casually leave all the Waitrose wrappers in view.

00100001 · 18/01/2019 12:41

if there's no sausage rolls.... is it even a buffet??

Lotsofsausage · 18/01/2019 12:41

Lol @ElsieMc well If scotch eggs are good enough for royalty......

Sausage rolls always go first in our staff room. We’re all middle class.

User758172 · 18/01/2019 12:42

Crudités, pasta/couscous/quinoa salad, quiche, sandwiches, cracker and cheese assortment. Can’t cater for large numbers in my tiny kitchen so I usually buy in big quantities from M&S!

halfwitpicker the only one who is offended on here seems to be you Grin

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 18/01/2019 12:45

lotsofsausage funnily enough, I was going to suggest Ottolenghi salads, but you beat me to it

This Mary Berry book has lots of recipes for catering for a crowd, and you don't get much more middle class than Mary Berry

Seriously, you can't go wrong with felafels and dips, see all these recipes:

YesSheCan · 18/01/2019 12:45

Cous cous is pretty easy. Or potato salad.

Lotsofsausage · 18/01/2019 12:45

Maybe I’ll make some ‘atrisan’ Sausage rolls with fancy stuff in them. Or get a bag of Greggs frozen ones 🤣

People seem to think that Waitrose is middle-class, so you could always get inspiration from this

thecatsthecats · 18/01/2019 12:46

halfwitpicker

Quite. I came for the MN faux outrage and was not disappointed.

We did a picnic at work, and there was always an unbreachable division between the sausage-roll, cheese twist, cocktail sausage brigade and those eating their mozzarella, sundried tomato, olive, brioche concoctions.

Except nobody was a pillock about it.

LaurieMarlow · 18/01/2019 12:46

Pate, antipasta meat selections, cheese board, olives and bits and nice bread. Don’t forget butter

This. If you want to save money maybe stock up on veg antipasti (peppers/artichokes/aubergine in oil).

A veggie frittata would work well too.

Penguincake · 18/01/2019 12:47

"Oh come the fuck on people, we all know what a frigging middle class buffet is. Stop being so offended, the lot of you. Frigging champagne socialists."

This a thousand times!

Sushi
Mini Tortilla Wraps
Crostini Canapes
Mini Toad in the holes
Roasted Red Pepper & Goat's Cheese Quiche
French Onion Tart
Salmon Blinis
Antipasti

Spanakopita (greek spinach and feta pie) seems easy to make (not that i've tried) and is always popular

Bluntness100 · 18/01/2019 12:51

Lol at middle class buffet, I knew some mumsnetter were obsessed with class, but Jesus, this is the first time I've seen it sink so low as a buffet.

Why did you not say you wanted something a bit less basic than sausage rolls and wotsits. It's not about class.

Fruitbatdancer · 18/01/2019 12:52

Will some body please think of the prawn voluvants!

adagio · 18/01/2019 12:53

To be fair, whether it’s an Iceland/Asda or a Waitrose/m&s buffet, everyone always eats a homemade butterfly cake (extra pints if it’s on a cake stand sprinkled with icing sugar) Grin

williteverend99 · 18/01/2019 12:53

Order from waitrose (who deliver buffet stuff) or from M&S (where you have to collect)
If you want to save money make the things they sell yourself.
