To ask what you would make for a middle class lunch buffet ?

I get the impression sausage rolls and cheese twists ain’t gonna cut it.
Has to be cold so don’t have to reheat it, and travel in a car. Also not break the bank!
I was going to make a feta tart type thing with filo pastry, possibly a frittata with lots of herbs. Any other suggestions ?

those vegetables pretending to be crisps.

(Whisper) the Aldi ones are lush.

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/01/2019 13:56

Pringles and Doritos are not middle class surely?

Surely only Kettle chips or similar are acceptable crisps, along with the vegetable ones of course.

Rosehip10 · 18/01/2019 13:59

Buffets are by their very nature vulgar.

5 piece Ottolenghi cold mezze menu

Flatbreads and more dips/veggie mousses as required.

Littletabbyocelot · 18/01/2019 14:08

I'm reading this thread very amused that my husband and I have passed on our class heritage to our children. One child would devour a buffet of sausage rolls, cocktail sausages and crisps. The other would make a bee line for the hummus, vegetables and other delectables on the middle class table.

Lotsofsausage · 18/01/2019 14:08

Mirrivan heck no they are not coming to my house. They might see all the wafer thin ham in my fridge.

Will people be using paper plates and plastic cups?

Are there any vegans to think about?

thegreatbeyond · 18/01/2019 14:09

Oooh, I'm middle class. I want Monster Munch, cheese and pineapple hedgehog and sausage rolls.

thegreatbeyond · 18/01/2019 14:09

And blue bubblegum panda pops.

Tonkerbea · 18/01/2019 14:09

Pringles are ruff as chuff.

You need a lentil curl/wave.

This actually made me nearly spit my tea all over my keyboard.
I hope your pearls and matching twin set are clean and ironed!

GCAcademic · 18/01/2019 14:14

Just do sausage rolls, cheese and pineapple on sticks, Twiglets, etc, and call it "retro". Make a big deal of how "ironic" it is. Everyone will love it and applaud your wit.

Lotsofsausage · 18/01/2019 14:15

Some fab suggestions here... thank you all. Might go with home made hummus, labneh, and fancy sausage rolls and maybe a tart.
Or instead of hummus some kind of broad bean/ mint dip as I have loads in the freezer.
*furiously scribbles all of these down for future ref

A middle class buffet Grin

Why don't you just write a list of what you would have bought alongside the prices and then tell everyone how you put that money in your pension and how much it will be worth in 20 years time.

PurpleDaisies · 18/01/2019 14:19

Sounds lovely. Some sort of bread would be a good addition, maybe sine fancy flatbreads.

OrgyofSausages · 18/01/2019 14:19

Mayonnaise is the essence of Working Class food-philistinism. Only balsamic and pesto drizzle will suffice. Mayonnaise is only one step up from Brown Sauce - Christ, we are straying into bloody Billy Elliot mining town territory here if we're not careful......

And middle class folk do not guzzle crisps/chips/doritos like some bunch of braying oiks. Please stick to celery Alberts Wink. We get ours from Selfridges food hall being stuck up middle class wankers

BlooperReel · 18/01/2019 14:20

Just go to Lidl and Aldi and buy allll the anti pasti shite, some nice bread and some decent olive oil.

Or just for the hilarity, wotists in a bowl, party ring biscuits, iceland sausage rolls and cheese and pineapple on sticks Grin

BlooperReel · 18/01/2019 14:21

You could make this for your bread with the olive oil: www.bowlofdelicious.com/olive-oil-bread-dip/

OrgyofSausages · 18/01/2019 14:21

And in answer to the Op - I would get the caterers in, tsk.

OrgyofSausages · 18/01/2019 14:23

How about a 70s theme OP - you could pretend you were being ever so retro....Findus savoury pancakes, for example? Bird's dream topping with sprinkles?

ThanksItHasPockets · 18/01/2019 14:24

If you’re making labneh, the Lancashire Farms Greek yoghurt comes in 1kg tubs and is really inexpensive. It’s sometimes with the paneer etc in Sainsbury’s and Morrison’s.

Lotsofsausage · 18/01/2019 14:27

I love that someone has actually ‘invented’ and posted a recipe online for olive oil and balsamic dip 😬
