To ask what you would make for a middle class lunch buffet ?

I get the impression sausage rolls and cheese twists ain’t gonna cut it.
Has to be cold so don’t have to reheat it, and travel in a car. Also not break the bank!
I was going to make a feta tart type thing with filo pastry, possibly a frittata with lots of herbs. Any other suggestions ?

That's it. Mumsnet class threads have jumped the shark

babybunny123 · 18/01/2019 14:29

as long as it isn't beige!! I hate a beige buffet.

Rudgie47 · 18/01/2019 14:29

Go to Iceland and buy loads of Greggs stuff like steak bakes, sausage rolls, cheese and onion pasties etc. Take them home and cook them in the oven.
Put them out and watch and learn they'll all eat them sure enough.

Seafour · 18/01/2019 14:31

Stilton and walnut shortbread, topped with pear slices and creme fraiche

NamedyChangedy · 18/01/2019 14:33

Oh dear, and I do rather like a cheese twist! I'll have to adjust my palette to be a bit more refined.

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 18/01/2019 14:34

Lots of veg options

Honeyroar · 18/01/2019 14:35

How about throwing in a few vegan Greggs sausage rolls, to really throw them!

Seriously though, some great ideas already. I can't believe all the palaver on the first couple of pages over the middle class buffet, I swear some people on MN have a running bet on how to be the most stupid and critical on the start of a thread!

MixedMaritalArts · 18/01/2019 14:36

Still makes me chuckle : Gregory and Gregory?

DonCorleoneTheThird · 18/01/2019 14:37

Please someone tell me what a beige buffet is? It's probably not what I am thinking...

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/01/2019 14:37

I've never had labneh before and I think the reason is that the menus in restaurants I've seen it in haven't sold it very well and made it sound a bit boring, but having googled, it now looks really nice.

I've also learned I can buy a cheesecloth from Wilkos for a couple of quid, make it using Aldi Greek Style yogurt and serve it with Aldi part baked ciabatta style bread, both of which I already have. Middle class my arse. It's bread and cream cheese FFS.

Blinkingblimey · 18/01/2019 14:38

Poached salmon fillets (cold so you can prep in advance obvs), cold salad of roasted green beans with cherry tomatoes and flaked almonds with vinaigrette and a potato salad (boiled new pots, Helmans & fresh chives to posh it up)?

Ohgoon · 18/01/2019 14:40

Just ignore the twats OP. Stupid fuckers

I would look at the BBC good food website to see what recipes they have for food that is in season. Anything in season will always taste fresher

BlooperReel · 18/01/2019 14:41

Lotsofsausage I loved it, had to share Grin because nobody has EVER thought of it

bsc · 18/01/2019 14:42

Good lord, not Doritos! I haven't eaten a dorito in my life. I associate them with cheese footballs and Cheetos.

Buffets are by their very nature vulgar.
Well played, rosehip, well played!

Blinkingblimey · 18/01/2019 14:43

Just seen you said you didn’t want to splash out..... howabout this? www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1898653/leek-goats-cheese-walnut-and-lemon-tart

pepparrot · 18/01/2019 14:48

Quiche made with feta cheese and caramelised onions is amazing, I love using a balsamic vinegar glaze as a sauce.

Nibbles such as nice bread, olives and a selection of cheeses are of course a must.

If you want to be really fancy you could try and get a Swedish smorgastorta, it's a sandwich savoury cake, they are amazing and very unusual.

Balloondog · 18/01/2019 14:51

A super easy (but looks impressive) sausage rolls cheat... buy frozen mini sausage rolls then egg wash and sprinkle with black sesame seeds before baking. They taste better because they're cooked fresh and the sesame seeds and egg wash make them look home made or at least a bit more glam 😁

DarlingNikita · 18/01/2019 14:51

Oh, just take a cheese and pineapple hedgehog, you know you're dying to.

Every fucker would eat it.

lumpsofitroundtheback · 18/01/2019 14:52

Do you need to provide a dessert?

If so, I recommend lemon drizzle cake.

OnwardsAndUpwards10 · 18/01/2019 14:53

Cheese and pineapple on sticks.

Blinkingblimey · 18/01/2019 14:54

Or just cook cocktail sausages as per normal and pour over a mixture of honey & whole grain mustard for the last few mins......some people brush over marmalade but personally think that’s 🤢

CoffeeRunner · 18/01/2019 14:55

A beige buffet is simply a buffet where most of the food is beige Grin.

Think sausage rolls, bread rolls, pork pies, breadsticks, quiche etc.

Lidl had a fantastic range of what I’d call buffet items before Christmas. Not sure if it’s a permanent range? Feta stuffed peppers, cold meat selection packs, fancy olives etc. etc. Reasonably priced too.

Also, I get what you mean by a middle class buffet. My sisters are both rather middle class (so they think anyway) and always cook a salmon for a buffet. Can easily be served cold.

allthgoodusernamesaretaken · 18/01/2019 14:56

Afternoon tea at lunch time?

delboysskinandblister · 18/01/2019 14:57

I'm going Nigella - Middle Class.

www.bbc.com/food/recipes/broad_bean_and_little_99871

delboysskinandblister · 18/01/2019 14:58

and Mary Berry above obvs. Sorry double clicked link for Nigella recipe twice.

Honestly, as previously posted I would call a caterers though. Or Mark or Waitrose buffet.
