AIBU?

To ask what you would make for a middle class lunch buffet ?

I get the impression sausage rolls and cheese twists ain’t gonna cut it.
Has to be cold so don’t have to reheat it, and travel in a car. Also not break the bank!
I was going to make a feta tart type thing with filo pastry, possibly a frittata with lots of herbs. Any other suggestions ?

Or how about a chopped salad?

Lots of other chopped salad recipes if you google.

Coronation cauliflower (or chicken if you aren’t veggie!)

Asparagus and goats cheese quiche

Bulgar wheat cooked in boullion with spring onions, lemon zest, dried cranberries, pine nuts and feta

Cold pesto pasta salad with shelled peas and asparagus tips

Cheese board

I have enjoyed the ludicrous virtue-signalling. Everybody knows exactly what OP means.

Big bowl of homemade slaw, which is v easy if you have a food processor - use the slicing disc to prep some combination red cabbage, white cabbage, fennel, red onion, apple etc. Then make a vinaigrette, add a dollop of Greek yoghurt or mayonnaise, and toss through.
Platter of sliced mozzarella and tomatoes, drizzled with olive oil and torn basil leaves.
Buy a large gammon (some of the big Christmas ones are reduced in the shops at the moment and are very cheap), cook and slice yourself.

Basically, colour, and not too much beige.

Globe artichokes make me fart. I like them on pizza with parma ham and olives, in betrayal of my working class roots.

7yo uc buffet= bread (the type you cut with a knife), cheese, cold roasted meat (from your estate), apples and pears from your orchard. Maybe pickles.

mc buffet = whatever is in with TV chefs atm, so mezze, "street food", vegan etc

wc buffet= what people like to eat, so none is wasted, anything goes, varies hugely family to family.

Bluntness Jesus I can’t fucking win, if i posted asking for buffet ideas that aren’t sausage rolls you’d have all jumped down my throat saying ‘what’s wrong with sausage rolls why don’t you just say middle class food’ (for the record I bloody love sausage rolls and shall take some too)

I would do a few different salads. A cous cous and roasted veg one, a potatoe one, a green salad with avocado etc,. A cheese board with nice crackers and chutneys. Nice Spanish meats and breads. Ouiche. Fancy pork pies.

You can serve sausage rolls and scotch eggs but they'd have to be artisan type ones, as in freshly made by someone who uses high quality ingredients now all I want to eat is the scotch eggs from the village shop made freshly this morning

Saying that I'd quite happily shove a Greggs delicacy in my gob too.

Wouldn't it be better to provide plenty of food that is suitable for vegetarians and everyone else rather than banning omnivores from the cheese sandwiches and onion bhajis?

I totally agree with this.

Dominoes Pizza. Plus coke. They’ll love it

So you want something a bit classier than what you would normally put on because you are doffing your cap to someone you are desperate to impress ?

Well, anything from Waitrose or Booths then.

Buy a bottle of truffle oil and dribble generously on everything to middle classify the buffet.

Probably something from somewhere slightly wanky like M&S Foodhall would do it.

I definitely know exactly what you mean op. When I do a buffet it's nice but by no stretch of the imagination would anyone term it middle class!

You have your majordomo dial the caterers....

Impeccably dressed, coiffed and smiling, you sashay serenely into the dining room to rapturous applause and ask if anyone cares for a top up.

Fruit, raw vegetables with hummous and sour cream dip, large latice pork pie, cheese board and crackers.

I just asked four random colleagues and they also all know exactly what you mean (and because they are better than me two have offered actual suggestions: a quinoa salad or hummus and breads from somewhere that would call itself 'artisan').

I really want a buffet now. I wish it was Xmas again.

Another idea - you might still find a big wheel of Stilton reduced to clear the Christmas stock.

Roasted vegetables (peppers, courgette, aubergines etc) served cold in a salad with dressing and herbs.

You could just have asked for ideas of food to offer beside sausage rolls.

I have seen sausage rolls at what could describe as a very posh buffet. I didn't realise the british class war extended to sausage rolls and buffet food, I thought it was just omnivores vs vegetarians Grin

I love any sort of a buffett as long as it's not just crisps and peanuts (and you'd be surprised at how many people, MC or otherwise, who think that just bowls of crisp-type things will do)
IMO it's always nice to have something hot.....

Balsamic glaze on a green leaf salad

You could jazz up the Greg's frozen buy doing a egg wash and creacked black pepper /herbs on so it looks fancy

Couscous/roasted vegetables salad

Veggie quiche - I'd get a shop on but pop it in the oven and add a bit more cheese

A cheese board Lidl would be good for this

Pate - Lidl

Sliced tomatoes with mozzarella salad

French bread cut up

Veggie antipasti - you can get jars cheap and put into dishes to look fancy

Hummus / potatoe salad / coleslaw etc

You definitely need an Ottolenghi dish on there. Preferably including that white stuff made from milk or yoghurt whose name I am not remembering,

And with a sprinkling of Za'atar for good measure.
