To expect a Toaster that fits Normal slices of bread?

AIBU?

If anyone has a toaster that fits a standard size slice of bread (without having to cut the crusts off!)

We've had various toasters over the years - our current one is a 'Breville' 2 slice.

Like I do everyday - I have just had to cut the bottom crusts off the Kingsmill 'Best of both' medium sliced bread.

The alternative is to drop it in as it is (shorter edge at the bottom) and then flip it over to toast the top when the lower half is done.

If anyone can point me in the direction of one that will fit normal Bread, then I would be very grateful.

Thanks

I used to turn my bread halfway through cooking to get the raw strip.

Oldraver · 17/01/2019 13:30

The best one we had was the Tefal Avanti...the slices go in at an angle and I think the slots are slightly bigger.

DGRossetti · 17/01/2019 13:31

I cut a template out of a loaf to take around stores when we got our last toaster. None of them fitted - they're all the same (wrong) size.

We just had toast for lunch. Done under the grill.

The closest we came was one of the cheapest one in Currys, which was supposed to be 4-slice, by the two slots being very long. But even then it didn't go down enough to toast the whole slice.

However, it doesn't matter what colour your kitchen is - there's a toaster to match.

BertieBotts · 17/01/2019 13:31

This drives me fucking insane. I can't help you because the last time I bought a toaster was years ago now but what I did in the end was draw around a slice of bread on a bit of a cardboard box and took my cardboard "toast" with me to try out all the toasters in the shop Blush - I probably looked mad but it was worth it. I think it was a Russell Hobbs in the end.

Then we moved abroad and I though we'd crack it by getting one with enough space for four slices at once but it didn't Angry So now I am stuck in ridiculous raw-edged toast hell again.

Marmite27 · 17/01/2019 13:32

We have a breville 4 slice and 50/50 and best of both fit without having to flip. It’s a revelation after our old one Smile

starzig · 17/01/2019 13:32

Is the the blue pack kingsmill. Cause they are really tall a opposed to you toaster being short. Grilled toast is the way forward.

Munchkingoat · 17/01/2019 13:34

I'm a toast flipper halfway through the process! Why oh why can't we have toasters that deal with bread!!!

TheQueef · 17/01/2019 13:34

I do toast in the microwave now, grill setting and timer (very important I don't like burnt offerings)

WoogleCone · 17/01/2019 13:35

Mines a Bosch two slice, fits a few different kinds of breads in the right way!

Fstar · 17/01/2019 13:37

This toaster from asda fits the large warburtons toastie read. I got it after getting fed up having to cut crusts or turn. Its brilliant, also fits bagels well too

Number12 · 17/01/2019 13:37

I know!!! I hear you op wtf are the manufacturers thinking? We are moaning about this in our house. We have yet to have a toaster that fits any bread!! Why????

smellyhouseelf · 17/01/2019 13:38

I just toast them on their side and they fit x

AngelOfDeathNix · 17/01/2019 13:40

This was my moan this morning....I get fed up of a raw bit of toast! I now want our toaster to break so that I can buy the copper one from Asda!

Notthebloodymustardcushion · 17/01/2019 13:42

I have a breville 4 slice, warburtons toastie fits if you pop the slice in sideways, however, be warned, I am on my second one, (toaster) as the last one caught fire from a crumb HmmShock and shorted out... so not exactly ideal, however, on the brightside and notwithstanding the risk of burning the house down, Grin there are no more sad anemic edges here!

DoneLikeAKipper · 17/01/2019 13:44

I have a long ‘4 slice’ toaster, makes 2 slices on their sides perfectly and wholly toasted. Even 4 stood up is more than passable for me (partner likes his edges crisp/burned though).

It’s like this one (I have no idea what brand we got, it was years ago).

RandomUsernameHere · 17/01/2019 13:45

We have a 4 slice Kenwood one. If the bread is too big I turn it "landscape" which works fine (only for 2 slices at a time though obviously)

higgyhog · 17/01/2019 13:47

We have a Dualit and it is fine with standard size slices. :Yes, they are expensive but we have had ours for about 20 years now and it has never let us down.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/01/2019 13:49

We found this infuriating as we get bread from our local bakery and slices are taller and thinner rather than the big-brand squarer slices, which still don't often fit.

We got one of these for the kitchen:
www.amazon.co.uk/Kalorik-TO38476-Giant-Slot-Toaster/dp/B078X5MK76?tag=mumsnetforum-21

And one of these for our trusty old caravan:

We're 100% happy with them and they do actually toast the entire slice in one go, but we didn't pay nearly as much as that, so they might be significantly cheaper elsewhere.

HarryTheSteppenwolf · 17/01/2019 13:51

I, too, find it amazing that a species that can travel to the moon and send probes to the edges of the solar system can't produce a toaster that a normal slice of bread fits in.

You would think after all this time that bread factories would have adapted to make bread that fits in toasters, given that the toaster manufacturers are clearly never going to make a toaster that fits the bread.

Buying "fresh" bread from Tesco is a particular problem. For some reason their loaves are taller than everyone else's, so there's no way of fitting a slice in on its side while putting it in upright will only toast just over half of it.

IsItThatTimeAgain · 17/01/2019 13:52

Bread in the UK isn't actually a normal size, but I still don't understand why you all don't have any toasters to fit the abnormally long bread.

MawkishTwaddle · 17/01/2019 13:53

We’ve got VTT571 4-Slice Toaster the Perfect Fit for Warburtons [[https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00TPM4TZG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_oIiqCb04ZFTM5?tag=mumsnetforum-21 this one]]

After years of irritation, it’s perfect.

OopsInamechangedagain · 17/01/2019 13:54

I do the same as RandomUsernameHere - use a 4-slice toaster for two slices turned on their side.

MawkishTwaddle · 17/01/2019 13:54

Gah, link fail.

I give up. Use the grill.
