Agree.

TheElementsSong · 18/01/2019 14:05

I think we are 2 or 3 weeks before things move from stockpiling to panic buying.

Yes, I think we're moving towards the tipping point in a few weeks. I wonder, as awareness takes hold and sentiment shifts, how many True BeLeavers will be bravely holding the line and pledging to prepare nothing - or will they smoothly segue from "scaremongering, nothing negative will happen" to "of course all good patriots will have an attic full of beans something something BlitzSpirit."

RedToothBrush · 18/01/2019 14:36

If panic sets in, I do wonder where in the country there will be problems.

I do wonder if there is a hope it will happen soon, as it will focus minds in a big way.

BrexitDestruction · 18/01/2019 14:46

Might get a bit panicky when plan B fails as well? Is that Monday?

I've just listened eavesdropped on to someone extolling the virtues of No Deal. No comprehension whatsoever of the difficulties that the country will face.

Even quoted Raab saying something along the lines of "he says it will be 6 months of disruption, but rather that than death by a thousand cuts. If we go for May's deal we haven't even sorted out the trade. If we go out on No Deal, we can do the World Trade rules. It will all be done with! ". FFS. FFS FOREVER.

Anyway, it's full of people like that round here, so I'm thinking the shops will be quieter for a bit longer than Remain areas. Wink

glamorousgrandmother · 18/01/2019 18:09

On the way in to Morrisons today I noticed, just inside the door, a stack of large, shallow plastic boxes about one tin deep. After that they were selling crates of baked beans and soup. There are also a lot of offers on tinned goods inside the shop. Coincidence? Maybe.

TheElementsSong · 18/01/2019 18:20

You know what just occurred to me?

Concerned people sensibly prepping and stockpiling for disruption will probably have a positive impact on first quarter retail figures.

And if that happens, Leavers will be delightedly grabbing at these as "evidence" that Brexit is Great for the economy and shows vast consumer confidence in the Sunlit Uplands (rather than the opposite).

Whilst conveniently forgetting that they'd spend considerable effort in exhorting people not to prep because it was all rubbish hysteria/panic/scaremongering/selfishness/wastefulness and all this lack of faith was killing Brexit fairies, etc.

(Plus, I suspect, most Leavers too have been stashing stuff away in a classic "do as I say, not as I do").

Agree @TheElementsSong . But at this stage, as long as I can personally guarantee food for my family if it gets a bit bumpy, I don't care.
BeLeavers have to wrestle with their own conscience that they are responsible for this crazy situation.

TheElementsSong · 18/01/2019 18:26

I agree. Just predicting the inevitable goalpost-moving hypocrisy in coming months Grin

WellBHouse · 18/01/2019 19:22

I think the general stockig up for me is (fuckity fuck) the likelihood that it will be a few weeks of chaos with no fresh fruit/veg, rather than well never seen another banana again type thing, which the leaves are painting is as crazy for.

chocooverload2010 · 18/01/2019 20:15

I thought this thread was a joke! It's brexit that's on the way not a zombie apocalypse.

Welcome, drive-by empty-slogan-spritzer! We highly value your content-free contribution, which no doubt you proudly think is highly original, and that nobody else has thought of on a 1260+ post series of threads.

I'm pretty unorganised usually and when we had all the snow last year I was caught short, and ended up trudging out to the supermarket to get some provisions but there was not much left in the way of fresh food.

With Brexshit on the horizon, I've started routinely purchasing a bit more when I shop, for the past few months. I don't have loads but as I live alone it should be enough to do me for a week or so (hopefully). I haven't actually sorted it into any kind of meal plan but there's stuff I can cook and make meals with and cold foods I can eat out the packet.

I do feel a bit better for having this modest stockpile.

bellinisurge · 18/01/2019 21:19

Curses @TheElementsSong , you beat me too it while I was watching The Grand Tour.
There's loads of drive bys at the moment on these threads Grin

Revealed: UK patients stockpile drugs in fear of no-deal Brexit
Doctors call for more transparency amid fears of shortages, especially of insulin

Stockpiling insulin for no-deal: 'If I run out, I have no idea what to do'
A man with diabetes explains why he has a fridge full of medicine in case of a hard Brexit

One diabetic patient, speaking anonymously, told the Guardian: “I am T1D and everyone on the diabetes forums are stockpiling insulin. People are reporting shortages due to this. We are used to getting insulin dispensed immediately or next day, but people say they are being asked to leave it a week.”

Another woman, who also wanted to remain anonymous, said: “I’m really nervous about medical supplies and have scouted out both how to do day trips to France to get meds, or illegal postal supplies from India.”

Another two weeks and there will be a real crisis over this. The government is allowing this to happen out of incompetence

bellinisurge · 18/01/2019 21:29

I read that article. Rather than blaming patients with genuine concerns, they are with this article, finally blaming the people who should be blamed.

borntobequiet · 18/01/2019 21:32

Nice when a delivery driver seems to have a better grasp of geography than the erstwhile Brexit Sec, Somerville.

RedToothBrush · 18/01/2019 21:42

Bellinsurge I'm not sure how they expect people to behave when they are openly telling businesses and pharmacists to stockpile. Of course people are going to react to that. It's completely natural if you are completely dependent on a drug. It's predictable and highly likely behaviour.

It's almost as if the Government WANT widespread public panic.

Cos the alternative that they really are that incompetent and inept is an even more terrifying thought.

Whisky2014 · 18/01/2019 22:14

As soon as the government advise anything to do with food shortages people will panic buy. So i can see what they haven't just yet...

Nativityriot · 18/01/2019 22:33

Do you think NI could have power/gas cuts? I have prepped for this just in case but wondering whether to get a load of fuel in. Have candles and torches, just need to organise them a bit better.

RedToothBrush · 18/01/2019 22:51

There are contingency plans for electricity in NI because they are worried that its potentially a problem.

SalrycLuxx · 19/01/2019 07:37

NI dies risk a lack of power. I promise Fuck (DM) (on good if authority, though still hearsay) that this is being worked on. There may be some interruption but fairly minimal, and the aim is no interruption all.

malificent7 · 19/01/2019 08:22

Another thing to consider is to eat as much fresh fruit and veg NOW before supply chains suffer..that way you are not chipping in to supplies whilst at the same time getting vitamins. Enjoy it whild you can i say..
